I on the other hand would rather intervene than stand back and watch someone get their head kicked in.

All very good but is it really worth risking getting your head kicked in? There are surely better ways to try to help the situation (such as sending for proper help) than trying to step in yourself and put yourself and others at more risk by doing so.

The first rule of first aid and any sort of emergency response is always to check for danger and first thing there has to be danger to yourself.

Every situation has to be taken on its own merits but most of the time the risk of stepping in outweigh the benefits.
