| Quote ="The_Enforcer"Because they were fun, the fans loved it! If you dont remember standing in the freezing cold on a dismal damp December Sunday afternoon seeing Skerrett start a mass brawl and then looking as innocent as a baby when called out by the ref then you've never lived. Those were the days of two sets of players getting stuck into one another and softening each other up. Nowadays everything is about stats instead of the good old fashioned biff.'"
I'm often reminded of the 'cult' movie 'Slapshot' starring Paul Newman. It was a 'bit of the biff' that brought the crowds and the fans both in the film and at the box office ......................that ultimately created a huge cult status for that film.
In days of old, at Wigan v Saints derby matches. If there wasn't a punch up during the first scrum or the first10 minutes the crowd thought they weren't being serious.
As a side note. We had one enforcer who as far as I know never got sent off - Brian McTigue. A ballplayer [i'excellence'[/i and one who the Ozzies feared on the field in more ways than one.

| When the ginger one was criticised for his lack of aggression he tried to ramp up that part of his game and became a penalty machine instead.

Very true that, the enforcer role was not faz’s game or style. He was giving 4/5 away a game at one point. Aggression is natural in my opinion and difficult to coach into someone unless you have a long run at it like waney did.

| I'm sure many of the players could easily appear more aggressive, the clever thing is doing it and staying on the pitch. Kel wasn't too good at that, remember him with Brendan Hill in his Bradford days, they never seemed to finish a match. Loved watching it though, but he wouldn't be too popular with the coaches these days.

You had to grab what crumbs of comfort you could back then.
The match you refer to saw Wigan get 2 men sent off and still win.

Not quite how it was ... but I understand. That season was Cowies 3rd year at Wigan he played a further seven winning World club chalenge in Brisbane and Grand Final amongst others he also gained all but one of his Wales and GB caps after that incident like I say I do understand.

Isn’t this thread about supposed hard men. What has the result got to do with any? The only result that matters in the context of the thread is foggy proved that Cowie was not a hard man at all. After foggy sorted him out other teams dominated him

He hardly sorted Cowie out. Yeah he busted Cowies nose with a cheap head butt but neither player went down nor finished the fight as they were broken up by the rest of the players. Cowie went on to be the first choice prop in the Wigan team for many years after that.

Or to put it another way: "notorious rugby union troll rewrites history to try to get a rise on a forum he should have better things to do than go on but clearly doesn't".
You've got to feel sorry for him/her/it really.

I'm unimpressed by hard men who can't help their team win matches. That Wigan still spanked Saints that day, with two men down, suggests Foggy was mainly a tough guy on the telly (and that getting in a lucky head-butt didn't count for much).
This is fun actually. Given our title success last year, we've not had a buffoonish troll on here in ages. Keep it going, lad. But don't expect any backup. The rest of your fellow Saints hide on their own forum these days.

| I'm all for it would love to be singing who ate all the pies again to him lol
If he has held a similar coaching job then it would maybe be worth the consideration but if it's just a job for the boys then not really worth it.
Do u need to be bringing one a coach on the bssis he will get em a bit more niggly with the current set of new rules looking like they want to speed up and clean up the ptb area?

I doubt the OP was totally serious.
Kelvin Skerrett wouldn't have a playing career these days. You get suspended for the slightest thing, so how much time would KS spend in the stand? Most of each season, I reckon.
Plus, you can't teach someone to be the junkyard dog. They either are or they aren't.
