| Youngsters really stepped up v NZW, very proud of the young lads, to score so many points and nil the NZW was really good to see. For me the second half was a fair reflection, young lads v young lads with a few season pros mixed in, and we looked great.
Which is a contrast to the first half, played nearly a full team and were getting beat, for whatever reason.
Few well some controversial comments to come...
I actually think Hampshire looks better than Bowen. Bowen has proven his a great player many times over, lots of experience and knows the game inside out, BUT does he know our game as well as Hampshire, when linking up outwide Hampshire plays like Sam, running the arch dragging tacklers out of position, often throwing the dummy and looking for the gap, this as we know works well.
In contrast Bowen almost plays like a second 7 outwide ofloading and passing early trying to bring runners into the game outwide, this doesn't seem to suit Goulding who's strength isn't really as a strike runner but as a centre who draws his man and releases Charnley to affect.
I'm not saying we should drop Bowen, but it does require some thought.
Bateman offers more strike than Clubb. For a young lad its easy to see the hype he came with, looks a handful everytime, clever player, hit the line hard and has a good offload. Bateman needs to be easied into the game after Bradford nearly wrecked his body, but he looks the real deal already.
Sam Powell outplayed Matty Smith. Looked great out there. Lead the team well, very pleased he's part of our set up.
McM is world class. This lads progressed and development over the past few years has been outstanding. I believe if he wants an NRL club he's got one, he has to be in the top 5 9s in the world.

Glad you've now taken it on-board after being warned for doing exactly the same thing the other day.
As an update for EVERYONE - derailing threads or being on a wind-up for the sake of being on a wind-up are both against the AUP and it is something that Admin have recently reminded the Mods to follow through on with bans. This is especially so for anyone with previous and even more so for those stupid enough to publicise they are a WUM - even if it they admitted it on another website.

For clarity so that I can evaluate whether you're opinions are worth responding to or not - did you watch the game this morning or didn't you as you seem to have claimed both?

I thought the exact same, Bowen is treating Goulding as a strike runner rather than the smart centre he is, which will stifle him and Charnley if it carries on. Goulding was constantly being chopped down immediately against Huddersfield. Bowen is a star though he'll adjust in time. It does surprise me though, I've always considered Tate to be a class all-rounder but Bowen was clearly used to treating him as a runner judging by his instincts.

Weakened Warriors team or not, a massive result for those Wigan youngsters. Whatever happens in the future they can always say they were involved in it.
I hope Sydney win next week of course, but if Wigan do the treble it will be fully deserved and something the town should be very proud of considering the amount of players from the town.

| Great try from Manfredi and Hampshire looked outstanding yet again. Sam Powell really stepped up today, I don't particularly rate him much but he played very well. Burgess is definitely someone I rate and he'll be very very good but his 4 tries were walk ins and you shouldn't get carried away with that; Manfredi's was better than all 4 put together. Also, what is Hampshire who was running alongside Manfredi for his try? Whoever it was has got some real toe on them.

Indeed, seems to have a more well rounded game than Tomkins. It's very early to tell, I know, but he should be a cracker if he continues to progress.

It's taken time for him to learn at fullback but he looks to be getting there with his positional play and his link up play. I really liked the looks of him at 6 though last year. He's got a great range of passing and just offers a huge threat out of there.
Either way though he'll be one heck of a player.

From what I've seen of him, if he's to make a position switch to Full Back he really needs to work on his composure under the high ball. He can obviously catch, I've seen him take difficult ones, but it seems he gets flustered when under a bomb with approaching defenders. Perhaps taking his eye off the ball and bracing for the oncoming defender but forgetting his most important task - catching it. If there's one area of his game to really work on, that's it.

| Really enjoyed this mornings game, apart from a spell when NZW had a purple patch we played well for 60 minutes. I thought Sarginson was the standout player in the first half, he looks a threat every time he gets the ball. Powell's all round game was a joy to watch, completely bossed the game but it did help in the 2nd half as our forwards were on top. Bateman is a player who is going to do very well for us, he's a naturally gifted player and I'm glad he's signed with us! I don't think anyone's getting carried away regarding whats to come next week after this mornings result, it's just very pleasing to see what we have coming through and what options we have available for the long season and for the future. I'm sure the coaching staff will be very pleased and we will see the benefits in the long run regardless of what happens next week.

Sarge looks like the strike centre we've been missing since George left. I just hope he learns how to find his winger more and make space for his winger. At times he looks like a 'head down' centre. Reminds me a little of Marsh with that, great strong runner who needs to remember there's more to the position than head down running.
Goulding is different, doesn't have the strike of Sarge, but always makes room for his winger, looks to draw men and set Josh free when possible.

That's the sad part of watching any young player star at the moment, you are willing them to do well but not too well as you know what that will mean in a couple if years.
It's still more the NRL that worries me rather then Union tbh. We're wide open to them picking our lads off and at the end of this trip NRL scouts note books will be chocked full of notes about Hampshire, Burgess, Manfredi etc as well as more advanced players like Scott Taylor and Josh Charnley.
We've made ourselves a pretty easy target sadly and whilst you'll always lose the odd one they shouldn't be walking out the door in the numbers they are.

He's a natural 6, I can't understand why we are trying to convert him into a fullback. My view will not change, you want your best players handling the ball as frequently as possible and therefore he needs to play in the halves. If we are giving him experience this season by playing him as the last line of defence then I can live with it, but to do it long-term would surpress a natural talent.

I suspect it's because we already have two very talented halves coming through in Powell and Williams, plus Smith who could potentially be with us another 5 seasons or so

| He'll be turned in to a fulltime fullback IMO because he's perfectly suited to that position in this style of play we adopt. Since Maguire was in charge we've had two solid halfs who do a simple but effective job with an X factor style player at fullback being fed by them. It was Deacon and Leuluai then Finch came in and then on to Green and Smith. The next in line will be Sam Powell who'll partner Smith next year IMO with Hampshire taking the 1 shirt.
I'd still like to see us chance our arm though and have a Hampshire/Bowen/Tomkins style player in both the 1 and 6 positions with a solid player at 7. I think that would add more unpredictability to our play.

Lets just call it 'The Sam Tomkins effect' as a player with natural strike and pace, as a second/third reciever he can link up in the line like Sam. Sam's had amazing success as a fb now a $ millionaire playing in the NRL. Maybe Wigan see Rocky as the next Sam.
Personally with a split halves system, I'm happy with Rocky at 1.

Williams is a bit of an X-Factor type player. We could see Hampshire at 1, Williams at 6, Smith at 7 and Powell used at hooker. Would be a very fast and creative spine.

Powell looks a better half to me. Hopefully he'll wait his turn and take his opportunity when Green leaves. Proabably at the end of the season.
