| Terry Newton did cheat but he was still a family man who made a mistake and paid for it with his life in the end. Two young girls no longer have a dad and if people cant just keep quiet for 1 minute then it just shows what a shocking community we live in.

It will have had absolutely no bearing on the vast majority of the supporters who were in the ground at the time as I doubt many younger supporters will have seen those players or remember them, they are simply names. Most people in rugby league will have seen Terry Newton play and as we are regarded as a 'community' based sport it should be held impeccably.
One or two morons may try to spoil it but in a capacity Old Trafford they'd be very brave or very stupid to try.

| anyone disrespecting a minutes silence should be ejected from the ground IMO. Its not actually that hard to do.....all that needs to happen is that the decent fans should point at the people making the noise and the stewards should eject them.
Whoever the person the silence is for, anyone making noise in a minutes silence is scum and deserves to be treated as such!

| I think the silence will be observed very well. I think there will then be the roar for your team that comes at the end of a silence. I then think there will be an attempt at Saints usual chant about Terry involving the words is, Terry, w***er, a , Newton. And I also think that somewhere, somehow, Terry will have a wry smile on his face knowing that even though he has passed on, he is still able to wind up the opposition.

I was at the 40th Munich anniversary game when Bolton played Man Utd and that too was observed impeccably (regrettably, I'd say Bolton fans have five times the 'minority' that would abuse such situations).
I think everyone should show a little more faith in humanity and more specifically the rugby league community - it's times like these that our sport shows it's true strength and spirit, and I have no doubt that, for sixty seconds, 76,000 people at Old Trafford and however many thousands watching on TV will pause and silently think of this tragic loss, before the players of each side show the ultimate tribute and come up with a cracker of a game in Terry's memory.

Don't be daft. I'm a City supporter but if you think that cuts any ice then you'd be severely mistaken. The reason it was impeccably observed was not because City fans felt affected by it but because it was common decency. If such nuggets can display such decency then I'd expect the same from everyone on Saturday.

A minute's applause is wholly inappropriate for a tragic death.
There are times for an applause and there are times for silence.
You applaud when some old past player who has had a good innings passes on. You do not applaud for untimely deaths of young people, air tragedies and stadium disasters.
Silence is the only appropriate way to do this and if one or two disrespect it, that's unfortunate and those people should be dealt with an appropriate fashion.

Not as daft as you though. Context, my discourteous friend. You did read the whole post didn't you? Am I stupid for believing that the minutes silence will be well observed? Are you personally guaranteeing that there will not be adverse chants in the ground?
Oh yes, one other thing - read the AUP regarding name-calling!

| I agree with Leyther Matt, we really ought to place a little more faith in the decency of humanity.
A minutes applause is simply not appropriate for somebody who has clearly suffered so much in the last few months because of a terrible mistake and ended his life so trsgically. A minutes silence is the only way to pay respects to Terry Newton whilst maintaining the dignity that his tragedy deserves...
Followed by a chant of "There's only one Terry Newton".
I like the other song but keeping it simple will have more people joining in and make it more audible on the TV and wherever Terry is watching from.

| As a Saints fan, I'll be ashamed on Saturday if there are any Saints fans who choose to be petty by not respecting the silence.
Bottom line is, a man, a father has died in absolutely tragic circumstances. The fact he was a rugby league player means we should mark our respect on Saturday at the game's biggest most public occasion.
Irrespective of how he chose to play the game, which in the context of this story is totally irrelevant, I will be thinking of him, his family and how very very sad it is that someone was so low that they chose to end their own life.

There are still plenty of City fans that use it as a subject of abuse to United fans though As a fan of MCFC I'm equally embarrassed by them.
Can I ask what other Wigan fans will be doing especially (apart from observing the silence of course)? I've seen some are getting "Newton 9" on their shirts, but that option isn't available to me. I thought fans could wear a black armband too? That's what I intend to do anyway.

I will be wearing nothing different. I will observe the silence (with a lump in my throat and glassy eyes, no doubt) and give an almighty "COME ON WIGAN!!" when the man in the middle toots his whistle.

| I usually lurk around these boards looking for rumour and gossip, but contribute little.
As a result I have forgotten my log in details.
I felt obliged to open a new account in order to comment on this thread.
Alot has been said about St Helens fans ruining the minutes silence.
Let's not forget that we have our own section of idiots who will have been drinking all day.
They have themselves failed to observe a minutes silence in the past.
If it is disrupted by the minority do not start to sssshh, boo or shout back. You will only make it worse.
PS. This also applies if Pat is taking a pressure kick.
How off putting do you think it is when approx. 15000 people are making steam train noises?

| I must admit I am not looking forward to this.
Being a Saints fan I just hope and pray that ALL Saints fans upheld the minutes silence.
What I am worried about though is the one game a year fans who only attend if we get to the final.
