| Quote ="hula89"So what was the reason for that fallout?
Cockney latics (btw where the hell does "Cockney Latics" come from?!) seem to think its to do with the council picking the Rugby over them in some way.'"
The Cockney Latic board originates from the owners, I believe one of them is a Wiganer who then went to live in London and created the website (not 100% if thats accurate but I think thats right.)
As for the fallout the Latics fans seem to recall times when they were supposedly looked down upon by certain Wigan rugby fans. One of those occasions includes the infamous chippy slogan whereby a local chip shop near the old Springfield Park had a sign in the window that allegedly said 'Good Luck Gillingham' (In case you hadn't guessed, Latics played Gillingham on that date - not sure if it was a big game at the time however)
Then there was the furore over the FA Cup tie when Wigan Athletic drew Liverpool at home. In order to boost revenue & improve the overall attendance the Latics wanted to play the game at Central Park to which the rugby hierarchy simply said 'No'.
Years later Maurice Lindsay was interviewed on the Latics and made an inflammatory statement about the Latics being a 'nice little football club playing in the back yard of rugby league'.
All this led to resentment by the fans of the time and of course when the Latics made it to the Premiership as fate would have it the rugby had hit a bad patch and that hatred spilled out. Of course many of the fans who spout the vitriol probably only have their dads and grandads word that this, that and the other happened but it didn't stop them jumping on the 'town turning blue' bandwagon - Personally I think this is why our attendances were so good when we were so awful.
So thats the history as I know it. Personally I want both to succeed as a Wiganer and won't fall out with the Latics just because some fans are bigoted in their views including my friends. I have even been abused by a Latics fan for supporting the rugby but to react is stooping to a lower level then I am prepared to go.

He said that years before tics played Liverpool in the League cup. The reason they didnt play the game at Central Park was due to there being no segregation..common sense really. As for the ML interview just put into the very well known video sharing website..Maurice Lindsay v wigan athletic ......what did say that was untrue??

I have heard people say Jack Robinson made derogatory statements about the football claiming it would never be played at a rugby league stadium - how true this is I do not know.

I have heard it and perhaps it was misconstrued somewhat as I don't think it was meant as an insult. I can see why it may have seemed patronising however.

I attend both because they are the town teams in my two favourite sports. I find it ridiculous how people can support Wigan rl and Blackburn/Bolton/man u/Crewe/Liverpool/Coventry etc and equally strange how latics fans can shout for st helens/Leeds etc, however it is a personal choice.

| I'm a huge fan of both. I'm from a rugby league family and thats my first love but i'm a big latics fan aswell and all the rivalry between the 2 clubs always frustrates me. I'm a proud Wiganer and to have a champion rugby league side and a premiership football side is brilliant for the town and puts us on the map.

I read in one of the books that commemorated the leaving of Central Park that one of the last parts of the ground to be taken down where the goalposts because they were set in 6ft blocks of concrete. Maybe that was the reason Association Football couldn't be played there.

| Watched Wigan Rugby since 1959 and used to watch Latics "Big matches" (FA cup against league opposition, decent friendlies etc.)
When Wigan went down into the second division a certain Latics crettin stated in the Evening Post that - "Rugby is finished in this town - come and watch the football!" This was the start of the hatred. Then within a few years we go on our best ever trophy spree and really them all off! For the next 20 years in must have been like being a Christian in Rome under Nero - no wonder they really are so bitter.
Whelan making us play at Widnes against Bradford was the final straw for me. Yes - I suppose this made me bitter too - How to upset more than half a town with one action. Wouldn't waste mi on 'em if they were on fire.

| There not down yet, you cant constantly hover in that zone and not go down eventually though
They are often quite frankly an embarrasment to Wigan though, with some of the performances they put in on the pitch, that and there bitterness towards RL puts a sour taste in my mouth. Its in our benefit though that they dont drop below championship level as they would then probably stuggle with rent payments for the DW and we would not doubt have to foot most of the bill for the DW, seen as the owners are technically Wigan Athletic and they could force us to do so.

It would be very risky of them to call our bluff by trying to up the rent if they go down. If we say feck off they would be struggling for the rent even more.

Thats one way to look at it, the only place we could go is to the reebok stadium, that wouldnt go down well id expect
On the flip side though If they did drop like a stone, what is to stop IL going to buy the DW outright? This would add a huge amount of corporate and matchday revenue that currently goes to Welco (Whelan)
