However how many have actually established themselves in the first team? How many have been as good as the players they replaced?'"
Do you even support Wigan? seriously what has upset you so much? has one of the management been rude to you? Ian Lenegan ignored you? there is a genuine dislike it would seem.
Karl Pryce - how was we supposed to know union had killed his career? before that he was a quality youngster
Tim Smith- should we just forget he won the best rookie in the NRL the season before?
Gelling- WAS REFERRED BY DEAN BELL AND ONE OF THE IRO"S!! not exactly proven to be as e as everybody try to say either.
Clubb- one of our best props this season
Sarginson- is proving to fairly useful
Phelps - was a good player for us but there was no room for him and much better than what we had at the time.
for all the people that bleat about we used to sign Barrett's, finch's, lima's and hoffmans how many of them stayed? Where would Lima or finch fit in now?

| The performance against Catalan showed why you need enforcers in any rugby league team, personalities that intimidate the opposition when things get brutal and turn nasty.
Its fine to roll out statistics when scrutinizing player performances and value to the team but when things got heated against Catalans we looked to give the ball to Pettybourne on every other play at times and he didn't let anybody down!
Brilliant stuff from him and thats part of the reason we signed him!
(notable mention to Clubb, thought he also had a great game and looked like a real leader).

Waney said in his press conference last week that he wants to give him his debut soon and he'll get real enjoyment about that

| To quote SW "He's a realist. We've got Anthony Gelling, Dan Sarginson, Iain Thornley, Jack Hughes and now Joel Tomkins: all of those players can play at centre."It's a very harsh club to be at - you need to be at your best all of the time.
"He understood where he was in the pecking order. If Darrell's playing out of his skin, he's always going to be picked, but it's very tough to be at the top of your game all of the time. He thought he would have a better chance at Hull KR."
I'm trying to swap Darrells name with Eddies and I can't, its one of those managerial inconsistencies, a coach should treat all players the same, yet Eddie will be given chances - maybe because he is further up the pecking order. Now lets drop Wane out of this, all coaches do this, its a tough job deciding who stays and who goes but how comes some people get treated with a different rule book? Has Eddie been fit at all in the last few years? Was his purchase a gamble that backfired? I'm struggling to see why Darrell has to go and why Eddie was bought. Hindsight I suppose.....

I have read the post and I have to say I am struggling to work it out.
Comparing an out of contract centre with an on contract Prop doesn't really make any sense to me.

| I think "the point" is Goulding has to playing out of his skin to get in in front of Gelling, Sarginson, Thornley, Hughes and Tomkins whereas Pettybourne is given a chance straight away at prop because the competition for places isn't as great and after being unfit all year he goes straight into the team.
So he is comparing a centre to a prop in the way they are being treated for team selection.
How's that Dave O?

| But there are 4 sports available in the team for Prop a position where we lack experience and depth of quality whereas we have 2 centre spots.

| Pettybourne will have a fight on his hands when he's back to get a spot IMO. In a standard selection we normally have 4 props and to my mind three of those spots should be nailed down by Flower, Taylor and Clubb. I think those three have been a step above the other lads this year so that leaves just one spot open. At the minute Crosby is playing well and Wane likes Dudson (although many including me don't). I also wouldn't count out Ryan Sutton who played very impressively in his first few games and Waney has since rested him. He may feel he's ready for a spot again soon and if he performs I think Wane would back him if he felt he deserved it.
There's some depth at prop IMO but injuries have meant it doesn't always look that way. Hopefully in a few weeks we'll have 8 or 9 lads battling it out for 4 spots.

Unsatisfactory. We have far more props than centres and God knows why anyone would think think Goulding has to play out of his skin to get in the team in front of any of those other players. You'd think they were all Gene Miles clones

| Goulding is a casualty of the WCC in my opinion can look class for large periods but when he's not on fire he doesn't have that big athletic body of a gelling who can still make meters even whilst playing poor.

Goulding is hardly Gene Miles either.
I don't understand the uproar on this? All our centres, Goulding included, are distinctly average. The only difference that separates Goulding from the rest is that the others are here next season and that's why he's not being picked.
The situations behind the two aren't the same. Most people can see this apart from a select few? Could these people either have an hidden agenda with the club or be linked in some way with Goulding?

Do you mean unsatisfactory in that you don't like what Waney is quoted as saying or you don't agree with my interpretation of the "point"?

| Pettybourne's done ok in the games he's played this season. Some seem to have him down as a big fan's favourite and others as a complete flop, when I don't think either opinion is justified.
There is an argument that we shouldn't have signed an overseas player with his recent injury record, but he's been unfortunate with multiple injuries rather than recurring ones. We've seen over the last few seasons you need 7 or 8 quality props in the squad to cover injuries.
FWIW I don't think he would make our first choice 17, and I think he'll struggle even more when we have Tautai.

He may well struggle.
This season:
Taylor
Flower
Clubb
are looking like the backbone with one from:
Crosby
Pettybourne
Sutton
Dudson
Being the 4th choice and other back ups to cover injury.
The back row will be pretty easy to pick when Joel Tomkins comes back into the team (assuming he can play to a similar level he used to). Farrell and Tomkins would be 11 & 12 and Bateman off the bench. So Pettybourne and Clubb who can play in the back row should be focused on the prop places.
Next season you would assume its Tautai in, Taylor out.

The Taylor rumours seemed to have died down recently, and it was suggested on the Hull board that he's staying for next season and moving to them the year after. May well be blind optimism on my part, but I really hope that's true. If he does leave next season then we need a quality replacement alongside Tautai IMO.

| We've also got James Greenwood returning to us for 2015.
From the list above, if Taylor stays for 2015 that's eight props we'll have.
