Ultimately I can't blame him for wanting to go and test himself in the NRL but I do feel we should have held him to the third year if that deal he signed.

It's not to be though and we move on. I just hope the emotion of it all doesn't hinder him and the team this Friday (and hopefully the week after).

is it really that hard to understand that running a club cost money and the directors don't just pocket any transfer money we get? if Ian was in it for the money do you think we would have refurbished the Orrell training facilities, bought the wigan academy facilities or extended a partnership to south wales which costs the club money.

Are you trying to say we needed to sell Tomkins to carry on running the club? Or are you saying we had to sell him because he wanted to leave?

If its the first then I don't believe it and if that is the case and we needed the money then we are in deep trouble because theres only so many players we can sell before we have no players left to sell. If you believe that is the reason we have sold Tomkins then I think you are deluded. All those off the field things you mention just increases the clubs value when Lenegan comes to sell us off in the future.

If you believe the second is true then you may be right. What can we do? Well we can hold him to the contract he signed 2 years ago for a start. You know the one Lenegan himself was bragging about? Contracted for 5 but deffo here for 3 years? The only reason we would decide to sell the best player in Super League early is due to being able to get a transfer fee. Money orientated sale.

Because, on the face of it, it hasn't gone to replace players.

Now I'm sure you can say the usual, "on infrastructure, on investment, on back office et etc"

But the implication is that without these departures, and the associated transfer fees there would have been none of this.

In terms of where the money goes, then presumably it's onto the balance sheet of Wigan RL (at least in the first instance).

If the chairman then takes money out of the club, or doesn't put money into the club that he otherwise would have had to, then it is indeed going "into his pocket".

Whether or not this is acceptable depends on your point of view.

they wasn't being offered double their salary elsewhere was they and they play in the premiership and considered they best players in the world, sam tomkins all ways get the tag of well let see what he can do in the NRL.

Since he was supposed to be legally bound to a contract of which nobody knows was 3 or 5 years then Mr Lenegan could of demanded he stays for at the very least another year but its obvious that the money was more attractive unless what Mr Lenegan told us about the 3/5 year deal was lies?

This is symptomatic of a worrying trend in SL. It has always been the case that the richer or "bigger" clubs like Wigan have been able to attract talent from the smaller and poorer clubs in SL. With the current disparity in the salary cap between the northern and southern hemispheres, it is now the case that the NRL can pretty much take their pick of British talent. Beyond the limits the NRL clubs desire to cream off our best players, it could be that only sentiment or family ties will dissuade players from moving south.

As far as im aware its another 3 years until his contract was up but he wasn't allowed to speak to RU clubs in the first 3 years out of the total 5.

He signed a five year contract with an agreement he could talk to interested parties after three years I doubt anyone held a gun to his head to make him sign, so not sure how NZW would have paid no fee next year !!

True up to a point; the main advantage I see in the return ticket clause is that it stops him going to one of our rivals if/when he does come back to SL.
