| The thread was derailed by AUOP in the very first reply to the OP. Still, it's been a good thread IMO. For me the quality of performance has been lacking for most of the season but, as we all know, it always comes down to how you play in Autumn, not Spring. Whether we win the GF or not I give SW qualified support just for getting us there, even if the images of our backs making the hard yards all season are still fresh in my mind.

Brilliant contribution as ever. This is the one coming from the guy who quit the board when he didn't like what other people were saying!
You do realise that people have different opinions to your own right.
The only 'child' i can see is you. Can you not see the irony that when we play badly you won't let an inch of blame be put at the feet of Wane but when we are successful it's suddenly a master stroke on his part??
Where is the evenhandedness? I've already said if we win the GF then he deserves praise but if we don't there should be a frank discussion about the success of his time as head coach. I'm not alone in saying this has been an indifferent season - you yourself couldn't be have been happy with some of the performances. Notice the word performances and not results there is a difference between getting beat and not performing (Cas, Wire & Cats away - Hull in the Cup etc compared to our last min loss at Saints).
I answered your original question so can you answer mine? IF we don't win anything this season how long would you personally given Wane until he wins another trophy? Are you just indefinitely behind him regardless of anything else?'"
But what would your answer to Charlie's question be? If we don't win on Saturday, so the "frank discussion" has to take place, who do you bring in who could do any better? I honestly don't think there is anyone at this stage. Not only are a lot of our players young, still learning and improving game on game, a lot of them have been with SW for years and would run their blood to water for him. Knee jerk getting rid of SW for reaching 3 grand finals on the bounce and bringing in a Powell or similar would be suicide IMO.
Last year we lost McIlorum in the week leading up to GF and Flower got sent off in the 2nd minute. Either of those things don't happen and we are back to back GF winners IMO. Yes the away performances and results need to improve and we've had two disappointing early exits in the cup, but it is pretty daft to be talking about getting rid of Wane.

| Wonder if Faz will consider coming back to RL now? You've got to imagine they'll have a coaching clear-out and no doubt Owen will get hung out to dry for getting sin-binned.

I've just read a comment on Facebook saying 'Burgess has again proved he's not good enough for Rugby Union and should move back to League'
It was a poor showing from him not being able to turn the game on its head in 11 minutes. I mean he touched the ball once and put a winger in the clear but still.

Top quality facebook trolling that. Surely.
Who else can't wait to wind up some rugger folk in town on Saturday?

That's a very good point actually. Personally I'll certainly be bombing any union camera crews I can spot. I'm in town for other stuff for most of the afternoon anyway. It'll be a good game baiting the Eton schoolboys.

| First comment by the reporter on SSN when discussing Lancasters failings was him picking Burgess.
Yeah that was the main issue! They're unbelievable.
I hope Burgess has seen (heard) enough.

| Quote ="SmokeyTA"Wigan must be clear favourites, To see those two leeds performances in a row was unbelievable. For them to get up a third time mentally, never mind physically is a massive massive ask. Leeds have had two wars, Wigan have had two perfect tune up games, and lets not forget are in far better form than Leeds who 3 weeks ago were getting panned in france.'"
You think? I don't think we can rely on Leeds not turning up for a big game no matter how many tough games they've had to play. If we know one thing about Leeds it's that they've got what it takes to win, even against the odds (which, incidentally, I don't think this is). What's more, they're fighting for a dream end to an amazing season, hoping to send Sinfield, Peacock and Luluai off with the treble. They are not going to let us spoil that easily!
All in all I think this is going to be a fantastic, brutally difficult, Grand Final. I'm glad Leeds are our opponents, it's the final I was hoping for - not because it will be in any way easier than anyone else, of course, but because I think - this year at least - such a win will have the biggest kudos; beating this Leeds team at this particular time, after the season you've had, will mean more to me. And if it all goes pear-shaped I won't begrudge "Sir" Kev & co their dream send off. I can cope with that better than another loss to Saints.
As pointed out upthread though, it can go on the toss of a coin, it's anyone's game. Bring it on!

Would it not be a good idea to invite the self proclaimed No 1 England R/Union supporter Prince Harry to the biggest game in town next weekend and I don't mean the England v Uruguay match.

No doubt i think we can win it, and to be honest, this group of players have never given me a reason to doubt them, but I just think that it is a game too far. There are only so many times you can go to the well and leeds have had to go to the very bottom of that well twice in 2 weeks. I think it will almost certainly be a close, tense, tight game and for Leeds to do that for the 3rd time in 3 weeks would be a mammoth effort.

A couple of times in the old playoff formats Wigan went to Leeds after playing extra play off games away, once we came close the other time you could see the players dead on their feet. Play off games away to Bulls and Hull then away to Leeds proved too much.
Wigan have played the same number of play off games this time as the Rhinos but you can argue that Wigan have had the easier last two games. If the Rhinos can win on Saturday I would say that that would have been their best ever season and a deserved send off to the leaving legends

He actually only played about 5 games of Rugby Union, captained England at both codes and is probably the finest junior player I have ever seen.

| Quote ="exiled Warrior"I am sorry but that is arrogance at least to my way of thinking. As a very long time Wigan fan through good and bad times we have no right to win anything, no club does, you earn the right by hard work and skill and getting to finals Past performances are absolutely no bearing on the present time. I am sure Wane will expect Wigan to win this years GF but it will be down to what happens on the day - hopefully whatever the outcome the best team on the day will win it (but I have a bad feeling that this may not be the case this year) but I am sure even as loyal and blinkered Wiganer as Wane will not think that Wigan have a right to win. Wigan are a top club - maybe even the most well known outside the UK and to non-RL fans but that means little when it comes to winning trophies.
Many other clubs have had periods of dominance and could justifiably claim to have a right to win things just as you are claiming for Wigan and it would be just as wrong - there have been some very good or even great sides that have won nothing - sometimes being beaten by lesser sides who had exceptional games or just by bad luck. Would Wigan have one more GF win if there had kept the full team on the pitch last year - we will never know but if we had then Wigan 's record over the last few years would look much better. Expectation, desire and will to win yes ; right - no.
In this day of salary capped level playing field Super League no club will dominate and have a monopoly on winning things like Wigan did back in the 80s and 90s those days are gone - I for one want Wigan to win things, I expect them to be challengers but at present there are 3 clubs (us, Leeds and Saints) who realistically can be winners and I am sure that the fans of other two have equally high opinions of their teams, even others like Cas and Huds are getting closer. As long as Wigan are getting to finals then that is the primary objective - finals are one-off games as often decided by one piece of brilliant play by an individual or a referee decision than anything else.'"
All clubs are equal. Some are more equal than others.
