Much better atmosphere when the crowd has been able to stand and that made it more intimidating for the opposition.
I would also include the old grounds in that such as Knowsley Rd, Central Park etc.'"
The fans are what make an atmosphere, not whether they have a seat behind them.

So why then is the DW stadium a nice place for opposition teams to visit?
Are Wigan fans just too polite or quiet? Is it because some of our supporters clap?

I'd say definitely too polite. It's like the majority are desperate to try to get the opposition to like us.

What's wrong with being polite and respectful? it's only a game, after all. If Wigan fans can show they're a class above most other clubs, with our polite, respectful atmosphere, this is something i'd be quite proud of.

I didn't realise the DW had become a nice place, if I remember correctly we went one season, since moving in, not losing a home game. Can't have been that nice then.
I bet some people clapped the opposition on the pitch that season too.

| I don’t think giving the opposition a welcome onto the field would give them any advantage, why wouldn’t it work the other way and make them feel less aggression to the home fans. It’s a moot point, but I would never consider it as an excuse for us not performing at home.

| It's so widespread at Wigan because our fanbase has an average age of 75 and like nothing more than having a blanket and a flask of tea at the rugby.

| Purpose built rugby league grounds have a playing area based upon the dimensions of a rugby league pitch eg 100m + in-goals, with suitable run-off areas.
They also don't have the pitch re-laid mid-season.

Because it shows a good spirit, a decency and respect for the opposition, teaching kids about sportsmanship and decorum.

| I would much rather be a Sportsmanlike Wigan RL fan that shows respect for other teams than a Leeds or Warrington fan ( I know its not all of them ) that boo an England player because he plays for Wigan. Clear off back to Association Football I say .

| There's no need for it what so ever, opposing players will think what a bunch of soft ar5e mugs. Wane has to be careful about what he says regarding the fans, but I get the feeling such actions grate on him, just like they do to many of the passionate Wigan fans who wouldn't clap an opposing player onto the pitch if threatened to lose an arm.
Certain sections of our fans could learn a lot from the likes of Wire, FC, KR, Cas on what real passionate support actually is. Too happy to jump on our own players backs than the oppostions.

| Jesus christ, I never thought anyone would ever be criticised for being respectful to another set of Human beings.
This thread is the most pathetic thing I've ever read.
I'm not even going to bother to explain my reasons for doing it.

It'll be a sad sad day for Wigan and RL in particular if we took this stance.
There is nothing wrong at all with sportsmanlike behaviour, and to suggest that supporters who politely applaud the opposition are not passionate about their team is ignorance of the highest order.

| I clap certain sides onto the pitch and I stay silent for others. It's my personal choice.
The big question should really be 'why boo your own team off the pitch?' Now that I don't understand. Yes it is your choice to do so or not but surely as a supporter you get behind them as opposed to getting on their backs??

I would never boo my side off, I just can't understand that at all... We pays our money, and are free to express ourselves, but thats just not something i have ever wanted to do.
