| Seen enough already?
The poor lad has played one competitive match out of position and a couple of pre season games to date. Anybody deserves longer then that to make an impression.

Indeed. Some of the people Connor would have deemed not good enough for Wigan given his short timescales include:
Pat Richards
Piggy
Craig Smith
Gene Miles
Adrian Lam
The Iros
etc
etc
amongst many others who have graced the shirt.

| As far as I'm concerned he can sh#t where he wants back in Australia! No idea and looked like an under 7 jumping around behind the ruck excited to get the ball.

| The poor lad made his debut out of position in a shock defeat, he stands no chance with some so called Wigan fans.

| Gelling was played out of position because his defence and positioning are too poor for centre and it was felt that being on the wing would be an easier introduction to Super League for him. That is why Charnley then went to the left wing so that Gelling would have Goulding as his centre to help him in defence and likewise Charnley would be able to help Hughes. Gelling's faults were fairly obvious from the pre-season friendlies and he doesnt look to have improved any judging by Sunday and until he does he wont be getting a game at centre anytime soon. It is hard to picture him in any position to be honest and his actual and best position is second row, not centre but I cant see him getting a game there either.

Surely that can't be the logic? Hughes is a miles better defender than Goulding and Charnley put together.

You cant be serious. Gouldings defence has been fantastic at centre and there hasnt been a try conceeded down that side all season bar one grubber in behind Charnley. As a centre Hughes defence isnt good at all, as Sunday showed and he wasnt the best against Catalans either. He has done well defending against players like Hauraki, Platt and Duport but these arent even proper centre's themselves. The first time he played against a proper centre in Marsh and he was shown up for pace and footwork. This is no criticism of Hughes as he is playing out of position and as done a good job but defending as a second row is completely different to defending as a centre.

Didn't look that way on Sunday.
His defence was appalling against Marsh simply because he couldn't get his feet moving quick enough against a more nimble man. Goulding or Charnley in direct competition against Marsh would have coped far better.
Thats the problem with having a second row at centre I suppose.

What? You did see Hughes being given a torrid time up against Marsh didn't you? There's no way that Hughes is a better defender than Goulding when playing at centre.
Goulding was alongside two young players in a combination that had never played alongside each other before and was covering for both when need be, while organising that right hand side along with Hansen.

Before the widnes game (when Wane would have obvioulsy made the decision to put Gelling with Goulding) Hughes defence had been literally error free, i dont think he had even missed a tackle once. even the statistics show Hughes better up in defence than goulding despite playing a game less www.superleague.co.uk/statistics ... eason=2012 Im not knocking goulding. Im just saying Hughes is as good as, if not better defender, so why feel the need to change a working combination in Charnley and Goulding to accomodate Gelling on the wing alongside the more experienced Goulding? Why not just put him there alongside Hughes who has done nothing wrong in defence? Its a massive thing what Wane got wrong IMO. We may have even got a few more trys and won the game with Charnley and Goulding working together on the same side.
I just cant understand the logic alongside the decision to change Charnleys wing. Surely it cant be all because of that?

| Being strong in defence isn't the same as not missing tackles though. Obviously it helps if you don't miss tackles but there's a lot more to it. The Widnes game highlighted a big weakness that Hughes has when coming up against quicker opponents and he can be a little indecisive.
It makes much more sense to put the more experienced players alongside a less experienced player where possible, although on this occasion it meant Charnley and Hughes together where there isn't much experience at all.
Hughes and Gelling both on the left would have been an absolute disaster in my opinion. Gelling struggled in defence and Goulding had to cover for him, I think asking Hughes to do that would be too much for a player who had only played 4 first team games at centre up until that point.

| The fact that Hughes defensive stats look better is than Gouldings may be down to Hughes having a very experienced winger in Richards outside.
