About 75% of our fanbase are over the age of 14. Therefore, if season ticket holders were to do a poll, im willing to bet the majority would want it removed. If Mr Lenegan liked the name Warriors, I dont think he would have done a poll to see who was for and against it personally. |

The Warrior tag was added to comply with Super League and it's been pretty useless since.
Other than mascots, when have we used the Warrior name for marketing or for our image? We have no affiliation with the tag, we don't use it and to be honest it's inevitable that it will eventually go one day.
Get rid now.

That was quite true. At one time if you said you supported/watched Wigan they knew you meant the Rugby. If you were a football fan of the Wigan club you supported Latics.
I'm not 100% convinced that the same applies now though.
Personally I would drop the Warriors tag, but as quite a few have said, the kids appear to like it and they are the future of the club. |

Christ almighty. Who honestly gives a rats ar4e?
It's not doing any harm. Whether you call the club Wigan RL if you're a 'traditionalist' (what the feck is a traditionalist?) or whether you call the club Wigan Warriors if you're a young kid it really, really does not matter.
The 'Warriors' tag is a gimic to market the club at young kids. Max the Warrior is all about marketing to the next generation of fans. When I was a kid I used to call the club Wigan Warriors, I used to go to 'Kelvin's club', I used to go the summer camps and subsequently I now follow Wigan home and away and will probably have a season ticket for the rest of my life. And yet I'll never call us 'Wigan Warriors' again, but I repeat - who cares?
It works from a marketing perspective - What's the problem?

...the tradition and heritage that Wigan rugby is built on and the removal of an unnecessary nickname that turns the great name of the club into a cheap and nasty advertising slogan that has no relevance and no basis except toe-curling alliteration. |

Just open the official website and the new marketing campaign for season tickets says 'Warriors together'.
The website spent all last season going through our squad with images saying '(insert name) is a Warrior, are you?'
The logo' for the community foundation etc. are all based around 'Warriors'.
The list could go on.
The club would need to have a huge rebrand of the club during the off-season with huge ANNOUNCEMENTS  to catch attention, this in itself could have a huge impact and get more fans in and get us noticed. This campaign could include a seriously retro shirt design, a return to the old crest, and slogans about our history.
I think the name change could work and along with a proper campagin could actually be ALOT more succesful than our average season ticket campaigns, especially if it was on the back of a trophy winning season. The next round of franchise applications could be the perfect opportunity IMO.

There would be a cost to rebrand, but future campaigns to continue the brand would carry a cost too.
UN-branding would bear similar costs.
Down here, if I say I follow Wigan, I usually have to follow that with 'rugby' as ignorant football fans assume I mean the Latics. Then I have to say it's not Wasps or Saints (Northampton) or Saracens 'cos it's LEAGUE, not fookin kick and clap!!   |
