It wasn't long ago that he was a contender for that role.
I don't know what point you're trying to make here.
You've seen his astonishing downturn in form for yourself.

| All in all it's just terribly sad. We would all love the idea of an 'on fire' Amos at FB with Sam as a second reciever at 6. Our attack would have so much strike it would be untrue.
However I feel Amos has to be treated like any other player, he must prove his worth in the reserves. Quite frankly from what I've seen (maybe it's due to injury or lack of confidence) he even isn't standing out at that level. To be honest he looks disinterested. Until this improves he must stay where he is, demonstrates the good level of comp we have at our club.

My first point is roberts has never done enough to warrant been even talked about as the best fullback in the game. Defo not 12 good games in sl and looking good against a crap Cas team?
My second point is 12 good games have clouded some Wigan fans opinion of him! He has given Wigan a poor return for his place in the squad! He's defo gonna be one of the better paid players! first season he was average to crap, second season a dozen good games and then crap! This season can't catch a bomb and can't get a game. Poor import. Other imports have totally out played and out shined Roberts and have given a much better return on their respective clubs investments: Brent Webb, Scott Donald, Clint greenshields, mick monahan, pat Richards and tommy to name a few.

And it's really cost us, hasn't it.
If I were you, I'd just count my blessings that his top form was so short-lived.
Whatever you think, Roberts was the stand-out player in the competition at the start of last season. It wasn't just Cas he did it against, it was Warrington, Hull KR and Saints as well. Given the form the rest of the team showed in 2010, you guys were quite fortunate that he was so severely injured when he was.

Just read your post to yourself mate. It's so defensive? "Just count your blessings" ?
I couldn't give a chuff who lines up infront of my team or any other! I'm talking rl. I can totally take my Leeds hat off as just a Rugby fan. I'm a neutral every weekend now.
I agree roberts was awesome for a few month but has been a poor import. I know he did it against more than Cas. A dozen good games in 2 and a half seasons is pi$$ poor. Wigan deserve better. As I said Roberts has been totally outshined by plenty of his contemporaries across sl.

| ive heard all sorts of rumors about famous.
everything from him being one of gleesons gang - with goulding too
to him not being able to keep his weight and fitness under control.
personally hes had a few good months but is that enough?
now we seem to be dead set on putting sam at full back all the time (massive mistake in my opinion) is he really needed?
id argue not, not if richards has just signed another deal, we need a class centre to replace carmont when he goes, i get rid free up a lot of money on the cap (if rumors are to be believed about his wages) and free up a quota spot,
can only get a better player in,

| I was watching Roberts' relative playing in the NRL the other day and the commentator said that Amos still held the record for the number of points scored on debut (22 points) This included 9 kicks. If he did that on debut, why with the troubles we had looking for a kicker wasnt Roberts involved.
I also remember when Pat first came over, he was dreadful, but once he started kicking, his confidence picked up and he's become a legend. Roberts had the chance to step up, I tink the chance has gone and it's time to look for a job back in the NRL.

One of the commentators said a few weeks back that a coach (it may have been John Lang) said that Amos Roberts was the finest athlete he had ever worked with.

Yes I picked up on that too, think it was brought up in relation to his nephew who scored for Souths, think it was Gus Gould probably from the Penrith days, as Lang would have been coaching Souths if it the same game I am thinking about.

Gleesons gang?
Honestly, there is nothing like the Wigan rumour mill, and lets throw Goulding in there as well...

| Roberts issues maybe mental not physical. He as always looked in top shape. Whether it's homesickness, fear from the injury or simply isn't bothered about playing for Wigan.
Bottom line is, he only plays first grade when good enough.

Maybe, its certanly not the first time that people have commented about issues away from the game that may be effecting his performances.
However i think its safe to assume that Maguire likes players that can run, pass and tackle consistently well and so far this season Roberts has come up short when he has had an opportunity - thats not to say he is a bad player but other players have taken their opportunity well.
Its something that i really like about Maguires Wigan - if you play well you keep your place in the team, if you make mistakes - and keep making them then you will not be selected - i don't think the same could be said about Wigan under Noble and thats part of the reason that we are the current champions.
Ive heard it many times on here that players just need a run of games to help their confidence but what use is that when a player is falling short in the basics of the game?
Last seasons performances count for nothing in the current Wigan regime and neither do reputations....those days are thankfully gone.

Good post. And I agree. If you're playing well you'll keep your place if not then you're dropped regardless of who you are. I hope that ethos continues after Madge leaves.
