Nah, it's early days and Finch is not 100%
Either that or Madge has seriously lost the plot with his team selection.

You'd have to ask Rogues or Bilko, but I can't imagine he played there in the academy.

| Why play our most skillfull and creative player at full back where he can get bombed and battered, when you could play him at half back and give him the chance to run the game. Doesn't make sense to me! Anyone at full back bar Sam.

| Sam just isn't up to playing FB. Poor under the high ball and, his kick return is poor and i worry every time the opposition kick the ball to him, high or not. Yes he's good a support / broken play but I think the points mentioned earlier, along with last line of defence, should be priority for a FB.
Pat is our best full back, but he's more effective on the wing.

i think so, amos was poor in our first season with us, as was pat and as was riddell. amos was superb b4 the injury for 10 games approx i think it was playing at FB. he came back towards the end of last year low on confidence and has been in and out of the team since. a prolonged period at FB is what is needed imo. if amos had not got injured and carried on that form would you still have classed him a failure because of his first season with us ???? he has been unfortunate with the timing of his injury. if hes given the opportunity to regain his form and fails then fair enough but i think you are been very very harsh with a player that obviously has all the skill in the world and a player that has shown he can be a world beater !!!

| Going forward it has to be
1. Pat
2. Goulding
3. Joel
4. Carmont
5. Charnley
6. Sam
7. Finch
9. Tommy
Micky Mac on the bench.
Roberts cannot justify selection and Sam is never a fullback, his defence/his high ball isnt good enough and teams are gang tackling him out of the game.

He's too small to play FB which, sadly, teams have worked out. I don't understand why we'd open up our most creative player to the kind of battering a FB gets on a weekly basis.
I'd put Richards at FB and have Charnley and Goulding on the wings. We lose Pat's height on kicks to the corner, but we also cut out the bomb that teams are hurting us with. As Maguire is a defence first coach I'd hope he makes this change when Richards is fit.

Whilst I think Sam should be our #1 I fully disagree with some of your comments.
Sam was, apart from one error, solid under the bomb. It was a definate marked improvement from the Salford game which is all we can ask. I also think his background at HB means he's the best out of him, Pat & the flapper at linking in from deep.
A new FB & centre is a must next season. Let's get at least one world class back who has been there and done it.

| Given we've got two of the best fullbacks ever under a a high ball currently on the coaching staff, the dropsy being displayed is shocking and needs sorting.
Extra work after training for Roberts and Tomkins.

That's the thing Sam HAS improved from the Salford game. He made some decent catches under pressure tonight and whilst errors are still occurring I honestly believe he's cut them in half.

| I'd move Sam back to 6 if for no other reason then to get him out of the firing line when running kicks back. He's being targeted by opposition defences who seem able to get away with various acts of foul play against him yet he's being watched like a hawk if he dares stick up for himself.
Lets get him some more ball closer to the action and lets get him running our team. His kicking out of hand when given the opportunity looks to have improved and he's as lively as ever running the ball.
He's a good option to have as a fullback in certain games but at the moment we need him in the halfs.

Yes, but that doesn't mean that the knowledge they posses and attempt to pass on is automatically absorbed by the trainees. If that were the case then any Wigan player could be brought up to their level.
A lot of it is natural ability, like Sam's side step.
I agree that training could improve them but they will never be as good as the two teachers.

Agreed, but I still think their technique when trying to catch the ball in traffic is not helping at the moment. Hampson technique of jumping high, with a raised knee (as protection) as he caught it is something that could be used more.

I hope you are being sarcastic.
Sam was the best player on the park tonight and the fact we got a draw was down to his running from the fullback position.
Watch again how we got into position for that last penalty and almost the try. There is not another fullback in this country could have done that for us.
I walked away from the ground with a Leeds spectator and I asked him about Tomkins. "Bloody hate him, but I wish he was at Leeds" he said.
