I was having the same conversation in the pub on Saturday afternoon - for me Barrett was amazing in NRL and when he came to us (maybe) my expectations were too high. His ball handling skills are class there'e no denying that but for me he had 2 games he showed and used that skill as he did in the NRL
1 was a home game (can't remember who to be honest) and he did an amazing dummy infront of the south
2 bradford 31-30; his vision and persistance topped with his skill in that game for me egged us on to that win
Apart from that I must say I wasn't over-awed

It seemed to be the games that he cut loose in. Another game was v Catalan in the semi at Warrington. The game had gone away from us but he seemed to throw out the game plan and take the game as he wanted to play it. I wish we'd have had him under Maguire rather than Nobby.

The thing with Trent is that he was in a poor team, and coached poorly. How good would he have been coached under MaGuire?

How do you take a game by the scruff of the neck and win it for your team player on the wing? I'm not sure there is much more Pat can do, he does everything expected of him in his position and more....
The playmakers are the ones who win the games, you named loads of them, Pat is a winger not a halfback or a LF.
Pat is the best winger in the league and on his form from last season I cannot see why he wouldn't get a game at Origin level. He is one of the best finishers in the game, he is quick, strong and he can read the game.
I can see your point though, he doesn't do as much as the players mentioned but he can't because he is a winger.

Exactly my point. Why do people cream themselves over a winger? He's not Offiah or Robinson. In fact I'd put Dallas and Carney in front of him.

Furner came to superleague 4 years after he last played for Australia and the circumstances of Hoffman's arrival are completely different to those of when Furner arrived. IMO Hoffman will be a Melbourne Storm player again and is simply at Wigan while they sort the money out. Theres a reason Lima and Finch got longer contract and the best player out the 3, Hoffman, was given a year with the second year being optional to him. Comparing Hoffman and Furner's deals are completely stupid as far as Im concerned.

I agree. Never underestimate a quality kicker as a goal is half a try, but Pat isn't as special otherwise as a lot on here would have u believe. He would be in my team though.

| The best players I’ve seen in a Wigan shirt (watching since 1980).
1. Brett Kenny
2. Ellery Hanley
3. Trent Barrett
4. Shaun Edwards
5. Andy Farrell
Only IMO before you all start disagreeing. (Could be a good topic for a new thread.)Trent was top class for me, but in a poor side. If we had him today I would be creaming my jeans. Seriously.
Hoffman wouldn’t make it into my top 10. But that’s not to say he’s a poor player, he is an excellent addition. It’s a bit too early to judge, but he does seem to be an astute signing. He is player of the season thus far (see our votes) in a good team, that’s all we can say at the minute.
Lima has disappointed, but hasn’t had as many games so still too early to judge.(He was excellent pre season v Wire hence the disappointment – missed far too many tackles on Sun).

Possibly, it’s very, very debatable. Barrett was class, but only for 2 seasons. Farrell did it over a sustained period. Saying that BK only did 1 season and left a lasting impression on me and lots of other Wiganers.

He was class for a lot less than 2 seasons.
Had some cracking games, but rivalled Leon in the hide and seek stakes at times. Can barely remember him playing against Saints.
Farrell WAS Wigan for a number of years, brilliant player and one I'd have in my team before Barrett any day of the week.

I'd add Gregory, Lam and Furner to that list too. Brett Kenny is the best player to have played for Wigan in my lifetime but not necessarily the most influencial in his time. The same could be said for Barrett.
For me the best players who just happen to have played for Wigan are in this order.
1. Kenny
2. Hanley
3. Gregory
4. Barrett
5. Renouf
As for best performances and influence in a Wigan shirt
1. Hanley

I think we really got the best years out of those 5 and that's why they would be classed as Wigan Legends rather than Legends who happen to have played for Wigan.

Why not? I'd say they wern't too far apart talent wise. What makes the difference is Farrell's consistancy over so many years for the same club.
Trent Barrett was, on his day, one of the best half backs I've ever seen and was the best player in SL in 2007. I honestly think we'd walk the league if he was in our current team and we weren't hit so hard by injuries.
