) you can still go to work on bail.

your making lots of assumptions there, in this country people remain innocent until proven guilty, greg bird played in between court appearances so why would these two be suspended?

I've just looked up the legal definition of "affray" and it may well be a bit of handbags, that results in nothing more than a caution from what I can see.

That said, given we had people wanting five match bans for dissent on here the other day I will be satisfied with nothing less than 11yrs in jail for this heinous crime

What do you think the clubs and/or the RFLs position would be if the two players were tested positive for drugs after their arrest for affray. I'm not suggesting for one moment by the way that it was the case.

It would be interesting in the fact that they would not have been tested by the RFL at a game.

Apparently it was other people kicking off and Harrison and Bridge intervened to try and calm the situation down. The police had to go into the club to arrest them.

These sorts of events seem to be occurring increasingly in RL, in Aus as much as here. It's not specifically a Wigan or Warrington or Saints or Leeds thing.

There are two main problems, as I see it:

1) The binge culture, which will always exist in the game, because it's always existed in society and probably always will. In fact, it's so embedded in society now that some folk actually seem to approve of it. Whenever anyone on these forums suggests that players should abstain during the season for fitness reasons, another comes on shouting that these are young lads who should be allowed to go out and get wasted as often as they want. Whether this attitude is correct or ridiculous is irrelevant - it shows that the binge culture is here to stay, and it's impossible to imagine young males, whatever their professional persuasion, avoiding it all the time.

2) The litigation culture, which is now bigger than ever. Hand in hand with their rise to prominence, celebs of every sort need to accept that they've also become targets for cynical people who want their money. And this is even more the case with sporting celebs, especially blokes, because they are more likely to respond with violence when provoked. It's far too easy for some cunning barsteward to supplement his dole money and burglary money by spotting a rich rugby or footie player in a pub, and harass him until a punch is thrown. Then he goes straight to the police, in eager anticipation of a generous out-of-court settlement.

The situation involving the Wire players may be completey different from that, but I'm talking in general terms. Perhaps one solution would be for these guys to socialise away from the lower-end pubs and clubs. There must be decent hotels, private bars etc where they can be encouraged to relax, and where lowlifes won't be able to get near them.

As you said APPARENTLY at the start of your post that in itself would suggest you (like most people posting on the subject) weren't there therefore like a lot of comments on the issue it is just speculation/reporting of rumour.

Only those directly involved know what happened, and it is now up to the police (and then possibly courts) to decide what happened and what action needs taking .

Granted I wasn't there however the person who told me what happened is strongly connected to the club and I trust what they tell me. It's nearer to the truth than the other stuff which has been posted about the incident.

I'm not condoning what happened and I agree that only the people there now exactly what happened and what specific involvment everybody had.

I completely agree, they should have minded their own business however your comment about nobody intervenes unless they fancy joining in is rubbish. I have intervened in confrontations before with no intention of joining in, I have done it to try and prevent escalation and injury!!

They shouldnt have put themselves in a situation where any numpty could drag them in then - thats if this "innocent heroes" story is at all true, when it could just as easily be the club spin.

Sadly on the whole, town centre nights out are littered with hooligans/coked up morons and people who cant handle their shandy, the average man on the street does his best to avoid these disgusting scroats so without it being to much of a stretch rugby players for that town really should go drinking somewhere else, why put themselves in that position.

I don't know enough about how that kind of process works tbh, however my stance is that there are clear rules for anybody found taking drugs in competition.

I suppose the difference here is that Sport England I believe enforce the 2 year ban, whereas this wouldn't be an official test, so I wouldn't expect any enforcement (abviously we are not talking about these two players here).

This is where it all becomes a bit cloudy, if the club were aware, do they keep it quiet and 'help' the players, or do they take the hard stance and sack them.

The difference with any Hock incident here is that he was tested by official sports testers, and a ban was enforced, so the decision is sort of made for the club, however as no ban would be forthcoming on these players in this instance, they would simply walk elsewhere, so I'm not sure.

As a club though, I am all for them supporting the family image. They have worked hard to get kids involved, and we don;t need idiots like this giving the club a bad name. My club is far more important than these players irrespective of their talent.

I have heard what happened from a police officer involved, and allegedly they weren't innocent bystanders, and I am now interested to see what Smith does, as we were told he is very strict with the players.

A player getting into trouble on a night out is one thing, but unfortunately it happens, and depending on the severity, I think players could be reprimanded and carry on. If they are out fighting whilst drugged up, they shouldn't be playing for my club. (I think I changed my stance throughout that post!!!)
