| Quote ="jonh"What I like about MM is he continues to develop, when he came on the scene he was just a lad who tackled hard and distributed the ball. I didn't rate him. He has become a far more controlling hooker.
When he and Piggy were on rotation it used to be a case of Piggy goes off and Wigan lose shape, now it has become a case of MM thinks about his game, leads us round the field and sets up field position. He may not do the eye catching stuff but he does the things other people don’t in defence, he intimidates opposition players, which like it or not is important to have in a pack and he calls the shots as our extra half.
I personally would not swap Roby for MM as they offer completely different skills. Wigan without MM’s aggression and in game skills/structure would not be effective. A combination of MM with Roby off the bench would be a great combination but never going to happen.
As for the “best hooker in SL” debate. Clarke is head and shoulders above anyone else. Wire have signed a real gem and he will in my opinion be the spark that reignites them as a team next year. He has it all already. Fantastic player. Destined for the NRL and he will be a sensation there as well if he decides to go after a few more years in SL. In my opinion whilst Locky is a very important player for us Clarke is in my opinion the most important player to his respective club in SL. When he goes next season I think it will be very damaging to Cas.'"
I think you are overstating Clark's ability and importance.
To suggest he is head and shoulders above Roby is staggering.
I'd also suggest that you miss O'Loughlin far more than Cas would miss Clark. If he was that vital to them I reckon he would be in the starting 13 every week and play more minutes.

Cas have a great combination of hookers in Milner and Clarke, both excellent young players who compliment themselves very well.
Clarke for me is far superior to Roby who in comparison to Clarke is fairly one dimensional. Don't get me wrong Roby is very good but Clarke is something else.
He has definatley signed for Wire by the way although rumour is now he is trying to wriggle out of it, Cas took a big wedge for him a year or so back when they had a bit of financial trouble.

I'm shocked you right him so highly above Roby but each to their own I suppose.
I'm sure your opinion would be the same if Roby wasn't a Saints player.

Roby is a player who is clearly very talented and a great SL player, one of the best but I think Clarke could well be considered World Class at the end of his career.

| Quote ="FearTheVee"I love this overly simplistic view of hookers "outperforming", judged in blissful isolation of the pack they are behind. It's just such utter nonsense.
How do you reckon Roby would have fared behind packs as dominant as Wigan's has been in recent seasons against Saints? He would have absolutely crucified Saints behind that Wigan pack.
MM is a hard hitting (but hit and miss) defender and a true 100% player, which is why Wigan fans love him and I can understand that.
But Roby he ain't, he's not even very close.
Roby has been poor this year by his standards (and I don't know how many games MM has played by comparison) but for thise calling him just a stat machine, how about:
ATTACK
4 tries - MM zero
9 assists - MM zero
25 busts - MM 8
4 clean breaks - MM 1
8 attacking kicks - MM zero
DEFENCE
MM missing nearly four times as many of his tackles made than Roby (despite Roby doing a gigantic amount more work in both attack and defence)
4 penalties - MM 6
Let's be honest - it's Roby by plenty as pretty much any non-Wigan fan would agree.'"
Stats lie. Just going back one game to the Leeds game MM should be awarded an assist for Wigan's first try. He made it with his dominant run and quick play the ball. Just one example.
To answer the OP, for Wigan I'm wouldn't swap him with anyone however I would happily fake a Roby, Clark or Lunt to come off the bench.

So if you get a quick play the ball in the tackle prior to a try then you should get an assist?

| Quote ="Nogga"There's a topic on the VT about English hookers. Fans of other clubs clearly don't rate (don't like) him.
I stated that I wouldn't swap him for any other English hooker. People on there are saying the likes of Lunt, Hodgson and Houghton are better than McIlorum.
Roby and Clarke are in the top three with McIlorum imo.
For me Roby isn't the threat he once was and I don't fear him like I once did, although he is still a top quality player.
Clarke has the x-factor and does the eye catching stuff but I haven't seen enough of him to judge his all round game.
Would any Wigan fan swap Micky Mac for any other English hooker? If yes, who would you swap him for and why?'"
The truth is somewhere inbetween. He's nowhere near as bad as opposition fans claim, he's underrated in that regard.
But he's probably not as good as some wigan fans make out either.
I like him as a hooker and would take him at leeds. He's clever and aggressive. He doesn't have the running game the likes of roby have, but they don't have his guile.

That makes no sense whatsoever.
Hookers do not play head to head so therefore the outcome of games does not represent who is the better player. That's ridiculous.

| McIlorum fits into Wigan pack's aggressive style of play.
Roby is a different type altogether who's running game suits Saints style of play.
Wigan fans, including me, think McIlorum gets the better of Roby because the Wigan pack have been winning the battle v the Saints forwards in most games since the start of 2010 season.
Wigan have won 6 trophies in four season, Saints none!
That doesn't mean that I don't rate Roby very highly, I do! On form he is the best around providing the team he plays in is the type that suits him.
One big downside for Roby is that Saints are playing him 80 mins every game every season. That just can't go on. They'll burn him out. Howarth was borrowed last year when Roby was injured then sent back. If this 80 mins continues then he will have a short playing career as injuries and loss of form will catch up with him.
Great player Roby, Saints will have to look after him though!

| We can argue this till the cows come home, but IMO it really depends on how the rest of the side is set up. MM fits into the wigan set up, I don't think Roby would suit Wigans style of play or or MM would suit Saints.
They both work well with the 12 other players and the coaches game plan.

I agree we are completely flogging him at the minute. A proper no.6 with Hohaia as a hooker would have been nice this season but the failure to buy a 6 has left us short.

| Some interesting points on this thread. I just think McIlorum is massively underrated by fans of other clubs. As others have said maybe he is slightly overrated by us Wigan fans.
The drop in intensity in both defence and attack is noticeable when he leaves the field, he really is vital to setting the high energy tempo we play with.
I'm not saying he's a world beater. He has his flaws. His distribution is not always spot on, he throws his standard forward pass from dummy half most games and he's not really blessed with pace.
Stats such as try assists are not that relevant IMO. The style of Wigans play means a high percentage of our tries are scored by shifting the ball wide. Anyway I still stand by my OP, I wouldn't swap him for any other English hooker. A pacey impact hooker to accompany him would be good!

| Very good for Wigan - fits the style but best in SL ....no, for a no 9 his game is limited in some ways.
Besides you are all wrong- according to the great RL guru Stevo, Micky Higham and Rob Burrow are the best players ever! Well whenever he commentates on matches they are playing in you could easily be forgiven for thinking they are supermen.
