| I'd be happy to see Betts back in RL at least unlike Smith he's not a walking joke.
Smith made England even more of a farce with the likes of Bridge & Myler being selected last season.
It can't get any worse.

| The RFL seem to have no ambition with that list. Why not come out and say "We want Shaun Edwards as the next England RL coach?". I realise he may not accept the position but at least it sets the bar high for anyone considering applying for the job.
The 4 Nations down under is going to be another miserable experience for us. We need a new coach installed ASAP, to give England at least half a chance.

| I'd expect McNamara to get the job as he was assistant already so they must think something of him at the RFL. I think only the Bradford fans would be happy with it but to be honest at the moment it doesn't matter too much who the England coach is. Sadly compared position for position our players simply don't compare to the Aussies so even having a top class coach wouldn't make us compete. After a few cycles of licencing when we have had eight to ten clubs that were able to develop squads over 10+ years from youth, having been sure of their places at the top level we will be able to see the beginnings of having the sort of quality conveyor belt of youth that the Aussies have and can hope to compete again. As I said when people were criticising Tony Smith and his selections it doesn't matter who is picked, they will beat the French/PNG and lose to Aus/NZ. The same will apply at the moment regardless of who is coach. I will support the men chosen all the same as they represent my nation.
Once we have had sufficient time and stability under the licence system to develop a top flight consisting of stable constituent clubs with squads that have come almost exclusively through their youth ranks and can produce as a result a group of players that can stand toe to toe with the Antipodeans and bear comparison with them I will start to be worried about the qualities and capability of the appointed coach.

England to gamble on Betts?
McNamara, Agar and McDermott also linked to national job
Betts: Latest name to be linked with England vacancy
Denis Betts is believed to have been interviewed for the vacant England job as the Rugby Football League move closer to making an appointment.
The former Wigan and Great Britain forward has emerged as a surprise contender to fill the role vacated by Tony Smith last November.

| I really and truly think the job is part time, the RFL are not going to get the best candidate for the job on a full time basis and if for example Betts took it and was successful it'd only be a matter of time before an SL club comes in and takes him off their hands.
I realise they've decided it is definitely a full time position but I would be happy from a club and country point of view to get Wane on board part-time. Think it would do him no end of good, the RFL would be getting someone professional and he now has the connections to support his only possible weakness which i would think could be tactical? At the end of the day if the world champions have a part-time coach it ain't too much of a problem!

| These players don't need coaching, I think they need an inspirational British ex player ie Hanley, Edwards, Schofield to inspire them and bond them as a team. The complaint from alot of players like Long is that the coaching was too technical, like doing tackling practice! If players selected at international level don't know how to tackle its time to pack in. The best coaches of GB in the last 20 years have been Hanley and Mal Reilly, both motivators of men.

You made a good point till that part! Now if you had said they need someone to talk about how great he was and how rubbish everyone else was, and that Maurice ruined his life etc etc, then you would have had the right person!
He may make the entire squad want to jump off a bridge together, other than that i dont think he could get them to bond as his favortie subject is himself and how hard done to he was by ......... (insert organisation)

| I hate to say it but we should copy the Aussies.
A panel should pick the squad and the coach should be part time.

I thought that given the circumstances, Denis Betts did very well indeed. We got some very good wins under him, despite having lost some of our best players. Out of the old guard, I think we only had Farrell left at that point.
It was under Millward that it all went to cock.

He's known as a motivator but I fail to see this backed up with results.

| If it's Mcnamara, then great news for Bradford, they might actually have a chance of winning something this year. However it's dire news for England.
If we want a full time coach and he's the best we can come up with.
Why not drop the idea of a full time coach, and go with a few English selector such as Sculthorpe and Radlinksi, and bring in someone such as Craig Bellamy to coach the team on a part time basis.

| I've been thinking about this and this is a real spanner in the works, but why have the RFL not looked at someone like Shaun Wane?
Fantastic motivator, demands respect and will get the best out of any team he coaches.

When have the RFL ever done something clever?
Mad to think that people on a internet forum can think of better ideas than the people incharge.

Clever RFL Things
1.
2.
3.
