| He's great under the high ball. Hudds knew this and gave away a penalty and a try in their urgency to prevent him challenging for the bomb on their line. Other than that though...

hahaha fair point. i feel he would make fewer errors in a team that was less prolific than wigan as he would have fewer try scoring opportunities to ruin/screw up, and would therefore look alot better than he currently appears as i agree with what others have mentioned in that all other aspects of his game are solid to good. hopefully that conveys what i meant first time round

He stands out not for how he takes (or doesn't take) his scoring chances but the work he does running the ball out and the yards he makes. He shows just how rubbish Karl Pryce was for us. Pryce got plenty of support on this board from some people. Pryce scored tries handed to him on a plate but did naff all elsewhere.
Despite fluffing a few chances he has also scored a few that took some scoring and has given a few choice passes as well.
No problem with King being given a shot but Gelling doesn't deserve to be dropped as opposed to rotated for King. There is a difference.

| He's awful, handling, positioning, ability to back himself, not wigan standard and shocked to hear that from others.
He will cost us a game at some point, even Wane expressed his thoughts about him luck very on tv during the latest match

Watch the replay of the game and see what Wane says (shouts) about him towards the end of the first half. You don't need to be much of a lip-reader
I agree that there's a player in there though. He's like a fish out of water on the wing at the moment but he looks to have a bit about him, if he's willing to learn how to play wing effective he could be destructive.

| I like the idea of him being on the wing. Big, Fast and powerful, great under the high ball and solid enough defensively. He runs the ball out bravely but we need to sort out his positioning and reading of his centre. Lets not forget that he not only learning a new position but also a new wing/centre partnership. I think the first time he played was outside Hughes who is inexperienced in himself. To play outside someone the quality of George who reads the game a second quicker than most isnt easy. If we nurture him in the right way, give the time and support to develop he could be a world beater. We could have our very own Vatuvai. For me he has the potential to be the long term replacement for Pat

| I recollect the same things being said about Pat Richards playing at centre out of position Gelling is a centre playing on the wing raw maybe but you can see he has potential.

| Stand by my original post in this thread. Couldn't see the fuss over him after the KR game. I certainly wouldn't consider playing him at centre either. Goulding's a centre and he coped alright on the wing for a season. It's not a hard transition from centre to wing. If you can't score tries on the wing in this team you've got a problem. He's got plenty of heart and scoots the ball in well but that only gets you so far. Would prefer to see King given a chance or to be more solid bring hughes in at centre and put goulding on the wing.

Richards was a NRL grand final winner when we signed him and playing in a rubbish team. This guy has been picked up from where was it? NZ amateur RL? Wherever it was, my point is they're not exactly comparable.

| I can see a good, maybe very good prospect in this young lad. not so many so called experienced players just come in and do well right from the start, just look back over history with others. he needs time to fit in, his main fault for me is his timing and positioning and this can only put right by playing first team games. it's better to learn now when we are doing well than to play him in a bad spell with even more pressure on him. it's not many who can just come in to any side and get it all right. so lets give the lad a break and if he is still not up to speed in a few more games fine, but he has not cost us a game yet, and I am more bothered about our goal kicking with the absence of pat than the education of this young prospect because at some time this has more chance of biting us on the backside.

| He was poor in a lot he did last night , but his commitment was not in question. He was always looking for work especially at the play the ball. He will have worse games and lot more good games . A young lad with bags of potential .

| if thornley comes back and nails the position i can see gelling slugging it out with tuson and huges for the 4th bench spot he is a 2nd rower as it stands and makes plenty of meters.

Still rather happy with him though.

| King or Murphy should play next week. Any forward who looked that lost and failed to link with the team would have been dropped without any hesitation and the same should go for Gelling.
He's impressive returning the ball, good with ball in hand until he's in some space and he's good in the air. Unfortunately he's got no idea where to stand and he's certainly not a natural finisher like a good winger should be.
If you keep making the same mistakes week after week then you should be dropped.

| He's clearly a centre not a winger. Goulding is in great form at centre but I can't help but feel that the team would be stronger if he and Gelling swapped places.

Gelling is on the wing precisely because the coaching staff consider him to be a liability defensively and positionally. He is no where near ready to play centre at SL level. Gelling's only position next week should be in the reserves, King was dropped for far less than what Gelling did last night.

| An aside on Gelling...
If you play on the left wing and run with the ball held in one hand, then it shouldn't be the right in respect of passing and handing off. Is it me or is that just basic?
Saying that, he may be raw but there is a talent worth building up. A good recruit.

| I have a lot of time for Gelling. Yes he looks like a newly born fawn running round with about as much sense as one.
He just needs to work on his positional play. Every other aspect of his game is there. He's terrific under the high bomb, tackles like a trooper and he's a real handful with ball in hand.
Still if Wane feels King deserves a shot then so be it. It would be nice to have someone with real speed outside Carmont against Saints.

There has been absolutely nothing to suggest that Gelling would be better at centre than he is as a winger! He may have played there before but never at anywhere near this standard. Moving Goulding to accommodate him would be ludicrous and would leave our right hand side weaker than it was when Joel was there last season. IMO if Gelling is getting caught out of position on the wing, in both attacking and defensive situations, then I think it would only be much worse if he was in the centres, which is a much more positionally-demanding position.
Anyone else think some of Gellings failings are down to a lack of concentration? He seems to wander a bit and forget where he needs to be, then if there is a break he seems to be 3/4 yards out of position, hence some of George's instinctive passes going to ground. I think he has the physical aspects to be a very good SL winger, he just needs to work on some of the techinal and mental sides of his game.

| Gelling is probrably the most frustrating player ive seen. One minute your praising him for his great work helping the forwards out or attacking a high kick to the corner and the next minute your holding your head in your hands because hes made a real blunder and bombed a try or done something really stupid. He really does need to learn to keep his composure and concentration.
