But is that necessary? We have Hampshire and Tierney who can play 1, Gelling, Thornley, Burgess and (at a push) Hughes who can play 3/4, and we have Hampshire, Powell and Williams in the halves. Who cares if no one man covers all of those positions?

| the problem defensively isnt that he plays in a poor team. He makes bad reads and leaves his team exposed. That is his choice not one forced on him by his team mates. He needs to learn how to read the game, study the opposition and put that into match practice. Attacking wise he is exciting but he needs educating.

That's the problem. The raw talent will stagnate and wither in the London team, being poorly coached and motivated and playing with Aussies out for a holiday. Look at Chubb, now 25 and going nowhere. 20 is a good age to still be coached and moulded in the right environment.

Yes, and educating is something we seem to do particularly well at, judging by the youngsters we're producing! At his age, it would be unfair to expect the finished product. He's younger than either Thornley or Gelling, and IMO has more potential than either of them.

| Looks very poor IMO. His defence in recent weeks has been nothing short of utter shocking. He's playing in poor side so can't help but IMO he's not Wigan class player.
I hope you sign him

In all fairness, Sam Tomkins would look awful at London. In the past iv been imoressed with Sarginson, he has raw natural talent, lately he's been poor defensively. Hopefully its nothing our coaching staff cant sort.
I remember similar stuff being posted when we signed a certain George Carmont.

Possibly playing in a poor team is the reason for his poor form but that doesn't stop him making one on one tackles.

His defensive stats are no worse than Jordan Turner. Gelling gave him a torrid time at Saints a couple of weeks back.

I've never said Turner is great in defence and pretty unsure what he's got to do with this thread?
I'm just posting IMO he's not good enough for Wigan. Both Goulding and Gelling are better players IMO.

That may well be the case, but as has already been said, he can play a variety of postions across the back line. Im not sure what position he will play, but, I trust our coaching staff with whoever we sign, they haven't done a bad job the last few seasons. We got slated for signing Blake Green, and in my opinion he's been outstanding this season for us, same goes for Flower and Dudson, when these 2 were signed I remember a thread on VT absoulutely crucifying Wigan for signing them and saying it was the beginning of the end.

Just checked the stats, your correct, Turner has missed 4 more tackles than sargison in 2013. On the flip side tho, Jordan Turner had made 171 more tackles than Sargison.
Attack wise, Turner had made double the clean breaks, double the try assists, made more meters, double the offloads etc.
Both are playing in poor teams.
Think I'd take Turner over him my old friend.

| I have no problem with signing Sarginson. He has a lot of potential and speed to burn and is likely to be cheap. I think with the right training and coaching he could develop into a very handy player and I certainly could see him developing into a good full back.

| I've been watching Sargy since he was in the Broncos youth set up. Coming through the juniors he played 6(and for Eng). Suddenly when Powell was coach at the Broncos we had a shortage of centres in the first team. I remember watching Sargy play for the 19's one Sat and he was stuck out at centre. The following week he was centre for the first. He seems to have stuck with that position ever since.
The youth coaches always said he would be a 13 as he is naturally very fit and a good tackler!!!
He seems to have stagnated in the first team.
Im told he has sorted his accom in Wigan for next season
I heard on Thur Clubb is coming to Wigan! That said he has been linked with Saints and Widnes in previous weeks.

That's true, if you ignore the fact turner misses far fewer of his tackles than sarginson. . . . .

| Not sure why there's a Turner v Sarginson comparison. They are similar players in terms of their versatility but they are both at different stages of their development.
Turner is 24 and should be approaching his best years now having had plenty of experience at Salford and Hull. It always takes centres a while to reach their peak because defensively it's one of the hardest, if not the hardest, position to master. Goulding struggled defensively until he was given consistency and now he's in his mid 20's he's hit his stride.
Sarginson has just turned 20 this year and while most of his Super League rugby has been at centre it's still an unfamiliar position to him. He's bound to be weak defensively. Pretty much every young centre has defensive weaknesses and those are players who have played that position since they were juniors. Watkins, Atkins, Goulding, Cudjoe; all had their defensive issues as young players, especially at the same age as Sarginson.
A weak defence as a 20 year old converted centre isn't a reason to write someone off, it's almost to be expected, especially if that player is playing in a very weak side.
Wigan have signed players from teams with a poor defence before and worked hard to improve that area. Just look at Scott Taylor, at the start of the year his defence was awful but it's improved a lot over the season and he's become a better player for it.
Sarginson has plenty of potential. He's had a dip in form but almost every young player goes through a similar dip, even the good ones.

| I just cannot fathom why we need a utility man and an average one at that when we have the squad we have.
I will back him obviously in a Wigan shirt and hope he proves me wrong.
In my opinion now though we need to be bringing in 2 more established players in terms of a centre and fullback as a priority with or without a new wingman I think we will be ok.

I'm sure all the professional rugby league coaches at Wigan will take your views on board when making a decision over future signings, they must study players over a period of time, look into their backgrounds, consider what improvements they can make, go over the squad they will have over the next few seasons, look at the finances involved, then put all that to one side and read what the visiting Saints fans on this site think and scrap the lot !!, thanks for the input, it was invaluable.

Indeed. RG not one for doing that though.
Whoever raised the valid point that Turner and Sarginson is not a valid comparison is 100% right. Not sure why RG brought up Gelling last week when he was abysmal on the whole tbh.
I like the look of this Sarginson. Looks a handy young player

Saints beat Wigan and your compulsion to post returns? What a coincidence. I can't tell how often you read the forum but it is pretty easy to check your fallow period as far as posting goes. If I needed to convince myself, that is.
