| Pretty pathetic cheap shot IMO. Galloway couldn't be bothered getting involved (because it was a pretty weak slap) so why did that little s&*t think it was ok to pile in? If that had been one of our players getting decked, we wouldn't hear the last of it...

So true you wouldn`t get someone like Bateman running in would you?
Tamou was looking at Garbutt who had hold of his jersey.
It happens lots of times in a season, it kicked off the guy got decked, the other guy got sent off.
What`s the fuss?
Now had Garbutt sat over him when he was laid out and hit him again I could understand why you would be getting upset soft lad.

What's Bateman got to do with it? I haven't seen him rush in and deck anyone recently, have you?
Watch the video again. Tamou was looking at Galloway while holding the shirt.
Yeah i'm so upset, i'm crying into my spritzer. How dare the big lumbering oaf hit the poor defenceless Australian man.
Grow up Reggie Kray. It was a pathetic cheap shot. End of.

| I don't get what the fuss is about. Tamou was housing and got snotted. This sort of stuff went on all the time 5 seasons ago and the majority loved it. I'm sure Tamou isn't bearing any grudges.
Besides, doesn't everyone like to see an Aussie get banjoed?

Yes I have seen Bateman try to deck someone as he quite rightly comes to the defence of his team mates.
You really think Garbutt is a lumbering oaf daring to hit someone!!!?
Reggie Kray
And lastly if you think it was a pathetic cheap shot I dread to think what a good shot from Garbutt would have done to the poor bloke. You big girl.

A bit of biff is fine, but Garbutt joined in someone else's handbags. He hit someone who wasn't even looking at him, as it was Galloway's issue. Now I'm off to dry my knickers.....

| Garbutt gets a two game ban with an EGP for what amounts to aggravated assault. Now, I enjoyed it at the time, as much as the next man (though lets not forget it was Aussie on Aussie). But in the cold light of day the RFL have been soft on Garbutt. I think that this has set a dangerous precedent for the rest of the season.

| I think all this "he wasn't looking at him" is slightly exaggerated. He wasn't staring directly at him but he was standing more or less in front of him and Garbutt had his hands on him before he hit him. He wasn't blind sided. 2 games is spot on with the current rules. Personally I'd like to have seen them both just sin binned and that be the end to it.
I've missed a bit of fisticuffs in the game recently.

Why? Because players will be happy to miss 2/3 games? The real dangerous precedent is Tamou just getting a warning.....so slap your opponent, he hits you and you get a man advantage when he gets sent off and you come back from the bin and he'll miss his side's next few games and you won't.
I think you're much more likely to see players repeat what Tamou did rather than what Garbutt did.

Because incidents like Garbutt's act of thuggery have largely been eradicated from the game. I'm sure that the RFL don't want to see any more of it, however much the fans like it. A two game ban is pitiful and is no deterrent. Flower got a six month ban which most of us supported in retrospect. And it worked. Ben Flower's behaviour has been exemplary ever since he returned.

| I'm not sure you strengthen your argument by adding Ben Flower to it, though. I'm not a "bring back the biff" guy either. Partly because you might as well say, bring back shillings and pence (it ain't gonna happen), and partly because if if I wanted to see big men punching each other, I'd be a boxing fan. Automatic reds for punches are the right way to go, I think, and I want to see 13 play 13.

Sorry but you're deluded. A two game ban is plenty of deterrent and perfectly appropriate for a fairly standard punch. These 'acts of thuggery' as you dramatically call them happen multiple times a season, often with far less provocation and not always face to face and toe to toe as this incident was.
Ben Flower certainly hasn't got rid of late hits from his game so I wouldn't say he's been exemplary, and I think most fans would say he was very lucky to only get six months for what he did - if you're going to call Garbutt's punch aggravated assault then I think you'd have to call Flower's second effort attempted murder. What Radford did to Bailey was thuggery and should have resulted in a longer ban, when Briers hit Ablett in the back of the head it was cowardly and should have resulted in a ban, and what Westwood did to Blake Green was both cowardly and thuggery and should have resulted in a lengthy ban. What Garbutt did was not comparable to any of these.
Standard single punch with no follow up to a fellow prop who committed the initial offence and was perfectly capable of seeing it coming and defending himself - that deserves a standard punishment, which it got. Therefore the stall has been set at two games minimum for throwing a punch. I'm happy with that.

Too right mate, the NRL is full of players slapping each other and rubbing their hands and arms on faces.
dont think Tamou will do that for a while

No they don't. When did you last see a punch like that in a game?
Garbutt had nothing to do with it. It was Tamou and Galloway. Tamou never saw the punch coming as Garbutt hadn't been involved. So he wasn't in a position to defend himself at all. It was unprovoked to the extent that Tamou did nothing to Garbutt.
As for Ben Flower and late hits, I think it might be you who is deluded...

James Green's on Travis Burns was practically identical, it took 5 days. They were both standard one on one punch, no amount of hyperbole from you can change that.

Yes he did, he is Galloway's team mate and was second marker - ergo very much to do with what was happening.
Quote ="Aboveusonlypie" It was Tamou and Galloway. Tamou never saw the punch coming as Garbutt hadn't been involved. '"
Your deductive reasoning is flawed. Tamou might not have seen it coming, but that was not because of Garbutt's actions. Tamou had just hit Garbutt's team mate in the face and Garbutt had hold of him, he also took a proper swing, it wasn't a one inch punch. Tamou had plenty of opportunity to see it coming, they were literally toe to toe, Galloway was off to the side.
Quote ="Aboveusonlypie"So he wasn't in a position to defend himself at all. It was unprovoked to the extent that Tamou did nothing to Garbutt.'"
Again, your deductive reasoning is flawed. He was utterly free to defend himself. You hit a prop in the face you'd better be in a position to defend yourself, which he was, that he didn't is an error on his part, but he wasn't being restrained, he wasn't blindsided and he had just started an altercation - the perfect recipe for being in a position to defend yourself. And since when in the history of Rugby League has hitting someone's team mates not been provocation? You might want to get that memo to every player in RL.

Fair enough BJ. We will agree to differ. I think Garbutt was lucky to get two games. You clearly don't. Tamou was looking directly at Galloway not at Garbutt and didn't it coming. Punching has virtually been outlawed in the NRL (though not in SoO) so he wasn't expecting a punch to be thrown.
Your comment about Flower does you no credit. Since his assault on Hohaia (which was completely out of character) he has been on best behaviour. He really isn't a dirty player. There are plenty at Wigan who can look after themselves and are happy to get involved in the rough stuff but Ben isn't one of them.

Can't believe he wasn't expecting a punch. A slap across the face is always intended to provoke - and often succeeds.
As for Flower, good player who's had his moment of infamy. From what I've seen he's doing well in terms of maintaining a balancing act between keeping within the laws while retaining the amount of aggression required to play prop to a good standard. Not easy after all the hype.
