| If we were going to adopt one skill from Union, I would have preferred it to be longer touch-kicking at penalties, but this really seems to be catching people out. It made a mess of Wakefield, and it seems that one of last night's tries came after Wigan coughed up up a knock-on when they were surprised at a scrum. No doubt we'll get a few back now too. This could make a bit of a change in the way the game's played.

| its about time teams latched on to it, we did try it against wakey, only problem i can see is the scrums getting messy and just being reformed by the refs, that is unless everybody improves the technique

Re "longer touch-kicking at penalties " can any one explain to me why when a penalty is given near the line the attacking team kicks into touch back down the field taking the ball away from the try line. Then are usually tackled further out from the original penalty, thus losing at least one tackle from the six ?

| I think they want the chance to have more space to attack into, rather than have a PTB close to the line and the defence behind the try line but right on top of them.

Imagine Karl Temata or LMS coming at you with a 1 or 2m run up, then imagine them coming at you with the energy and impetus built up in 7 or 8m, harder to stop... simples

| think you will find quite often the penalty if given within 10 mtrs of the touch line teams will kick in to touch so the tap re start is set 10 mtrs in from the touch giving a little more space.
Teams can move back from the spot where the penalty is awarded but they cannot move left or right
So penalty 2 mtrs in from touch and 2 mtrs from the try line, kick to touch and you set 10 mtrs in from touch gives more options to use the short side

| The ball is kicked a few meters back because although the spot where the penalty will be taken from has moved back, the defending team cannot move forward from orginal position (10 meters or on goal line),so as said before it gives more space to work in for attacking team.

The defending can move forward ie 10 metres away if the ball is kicked into touch resulting in it being more than 10 metres from the try line. What it effectively does is place the ball 10 metres in from the touch line where the ball is tapped. The advantage being you move the defence to one side of the pitch
Where the defence cant move forward is if the ball is kicked/tapped from behind the original point the penalty was awarded-ie you walk the penalty back keeping equidistant from the touch line

| east stander, i thought that is what i said? you find teams that get given the penalty close to the touch line will kick in to touch so they can resett the tap 10 mtrs in from touch, as you say you can walk backwards from the try line to take the tap but you cannot move lateraly across the pitch, so if penalty is awarded and its close to touch, take the kick and if yr close to the try line going back is safer saves cocking up and kicking dead in goal, then the tap is taken 10 mtrs in from touch

it would be nice if we could make some decent mtrs when we kick for touch, never mind where we re set, generally we make 15-20 mtrs most others can make make at least 30 if not 40 dependign on where on the field they get the kick, its an area where quins really suffer

It's a bugbear of mine, I mentioned it to my Dad when he was down for the Saints game and his point was that if you're not confident you can make a longer touch it's better to go shorter and not give away the ball. It's a fair point.

| The poor amount of metres we make when kicking to touch has constantly irritated for a couple of seasons now, but seems to be even poorer this year.
