Until recently I felt that now we’re Harlequins we should keep the “traditional” Quins shirt. Even tinkering with it and trying to make it look “not quite Quins” (e.g. the wonky quarters of a couple of years back, then reversing the sequence of colours last year) just made it look a mess.
Obviously the pastel colours are almost but not quite unique, as they are inevitably associated with our union partners, which leads to infuriating confusion at times – a classic example being when Castleford’s programme printers sourced a photograph of some union players for our match there last year!
However this new away shirt has really grown on me. It’s really distinctive, the combination of a red/blue/yellow shirt is unique as far as I can see amongst major football/rugby clubs of any code, and therefore gives us our best chance of having a shirt easily recognisable as being Harlequins RUGBY LEAGUE. The quarters design is simple and striking and also reflects the Harlequins tradition of a quartered shirt, but would be solely ours. And of course it would also maintain a link with the club’s past when a very similar shirt was worn in the previous spell at The Stoop. As has already been mentioned the pastel shirt looks a bit drab on the field (although I’ve always liked it as a leisure shirt and still do) whereas this red/blue/yellow version stands out a lot better during matches. Even if it’s only retained as the away shirt I think it would be a shame to abandon it for something completely different (and inevitably less striking and recognisable as uniquely ours) next year or the year after.
If this was to become our first choice shirt I for one would be happy to go along with that.
