| About time. Shocked the club have even considered this! Ignoring all our off field problems, attendences etc, hopefully Thorman can get us playing some better rugby, that our players will enjoy playing and in a couple of months we may start to look half decent again.
One thing is for certain... there should be no rash decisions or quick fixes when choosing another coach.
Personally would like to see a British coach too.
I'm backing Thorman 100% to put some heart back on us.

| I've been checking the news every couple of hours since the weekend for this. I'm quite relieved, nice bloke but sadly we've gone backwards. Hope Spuggy can step up and get us playing some attractive rugby!

| Probably the Right decision based on results.
Rick Stone is a good guy, he has time and respect for everyone and despite results this season he’s a good coach and man manager.
I hope he goes well somewhere when he gets back to Australia

| The right decision. Clearly a nice fella who loved to play boring safety first rugby.
I think the day of the Aussie coach has gone. A UK coach please.

| Suprised Andy Kelly wasn't put in charge temporarily as happened last time,Rick dug his own grave by making rumbling noises in the press about a new contract and churning out very poor performances and results at the same time.As we have allready appeared to have made a lot of recruitment and retention decisions for next season who ever comes in could find himself in a very difficult situation in trying to alter the losing culture currently in the club.

| Andy Kelly - I thought you wanted to start winning - if you aren't bothered about winning re-appoint Paul Anderson
If you want a young British coach - Danny Ward

| Stone is a quality coach and I believe he would have got it right if given more time. But a poor start and the taxi awaits.
But the club have obviously listened to the moaning fans.

Just out of interest, what makes you think Rick was/is a quality coach?

probably not, he has fallen out with rugby league full stop and gone into other business ventures.
in anycase i dont think he left on good terms with davy and thewlis doing a runner to leeds rhinos.

| well there we go, rick stone the scapegoat gets the chop... feel abit sorry for the guy, hes cleary a top bloke and been let down by the players that he inherited, his hands were tied to some extent when he joined as we were basically upto the salary cap and signing 5 bradford players which were already done deals.
the club needs a new lease of life and that starts at the top, many including me believe thewlis is a bigger problem than any coach at this club.
i knew weeks ago stone wasnt getting a new deal and said so on here, this was also know by the players... so who has really been making the decisions on the players that have just renewed deals?? brough one was a big mistake
whoever comes in has a big task on their hands and needs to be a very strong character to try and get his own way on things like bringing in his own backroom staff for starters not like stone being given a team to work with (thorman/robinson etc)
certainly thank stone for saving the club from a relegation battle, and getting us into the top 8 last season.... our upturn in form came with mamo who actully signed.
this season got off too a bad start and with the last two results the writing was on the wall so someone had to get the chop and as head coach its him... shame we cant sack a few players too who let him down,
what will change now??????? not a right lot as we still have the same group of players...hope we can survive in sl this year and maybe the new coach can get his own players in with the likes of hinchliffe and murphy leaving to free up some cap space

| I feel a bit for him. By every account he’s a good man and a nice guy. And he’s put his all into an organisation that is failing on multiple counts.
But then again, it’s a results business and there’s been nothing in his coaching career to date to suggest he can build a winning team.
It must have been a miserable year for him. I hope he’s got a good payout and he finds a gig closer to his wife and family.
Now, the next guy is going to have be something special to cut through the dead wood that hangs around the club.

we had that cap space the season he was in charge and he or thewlis more likely brought in brierlery and symonds... what a disaster those two turned out to be. least we got ikahihifo out of that panic buying period

| The message on the giants website looks ominously like Thorman is a front runner for the job. This would be a very bad move. We need a really strong character who knows how to deal with, and force changes upon experienced players (Brough). Thorman would be a disaster in this regard. Promoting someone from within should only happen when the structures at the club are good.. they aren't.

He did not inherit 5 players from Bradford. He signed two players o brien and Mellor himself when Bradford got into difficulties again. The previous three he’s given an extended deal to one- and when he had the opportunity to get rid of another to Wakefield changed his mind.
So sorry but that won’t wash. His own recruitment has been no better.
Mamo isn’t the reason we upturned for me- a certain Leigh player I reckon was the reason for that. Should have kept him instead of Rankin. Worse thing he did was give brough another year. Nowt much will change until he’s gone and the players can finally get some togetherness.

| We'll now see how good/bad our player's really are. Are they that bad or have they just not been playing for the coach? Only time will tell and it'll probably not happen straight away. Feel sorry for Rick Stone but as stated it's a results based sport and he's taken the bullet for things beyond his control at times.
On another note, I watched the Rugby Union Premier league show yesterday and there were 50000+ at London Stadium, Leicester sold out, 30000+ at St James Park 20000+ at Bath. How are they doing that? And how can RL learn?

Whats more to the point Brearley how come that these contracted players don't have their contracts ripped up after all it is they who are playing the tripe that Stone was sacked for. They most certainly have not been playing professional Rugby League.Try watching the warm up carefully and I will lay money you will be able to see the players who don't want to bother. Why sack Thewlis and Thorman they are not players and I might add Thorman at his best was equal to some of these con artists who are playing now.People ask why we don't attract more spectators having watched this lot this season it speaks for its self I'll bet that Leeds have more speccies Friday than we do!
Strangely enough this has been going on for quite a few years it is nothing new.RL is a hell of a hard game I you go on the field and give less than 100% you will get injured.Does this ring a bell Brearley.

| Why are people saying RS is a scapegoat, Why does Brough come in for such a lot of stick because he is not the player he was a couple of seasons ago, ( he is still better than some of our " get him signed up for 5 years stars " . The truth for me is that the Giants is a losers club, It's no one person fault It's the whole club.
If you think thats being harsh or doom and gloom, then examine the record for the last 50 odd years, It's a history of a once great club that's been going backwards for so long It's hard to see anything ever changing. Despite a long list of Coaches and an even longer list of players the club has gone nowhere. Out of all that long list of coaches they can't all have been poor, and neither can they all have been let down by the players.
In my time watching the Giants ( as my team ) only two coaches have shown any sort of ability to get the players performing to the standard required, A Murphy and N Brown, although T Smith may well have done had he stayed, I don't believe the problem with Brown was any of the clubs doing, But it certainly failed to capitalize on the other two, and i believe in both cases it was about money, Something that has been squandered in large amounts in other areas.
Why does no one seem to understand that rugby league is a business , and like a Supermarket ,If it's failing sacking the till girls wont save it, The management have to be right or the whole thing just crumbles.
I still think the right coach is vital in sport, some can get the very best out of players ( example Powel ) Although i liked R S as a person he did not take us forward at all, We have been marking time and i'm not surprised he is gone.
What i expect to happen now is to go with Thorman so the club can go through the usual lengthy and thorough job of vetting all applicants, and then pick a cheap one so as to leave more money to sign a couple of Superstars to make us into the Giants that finally wake up,
We have the players now we just cant get them to play, and Rick has done no better than most of the others.

What they’re doing isn’t rocket science. It could work in Huddersfield. They cultivate a feeling of belonging in their spectators by creating what Eric Hobsbawm called “invented traditions”

| Jo, I’m not sure why you think we have the players to compete. The recruitment over the past three or four years has been desperate at times.
Grix - gone, no replacement
McGillvary - improved enormously
Cudjoe - injured but still outstanding
Wardle - gone, no replacement
Murphy - shot as a player, but still here
Brough - shot as a player, but still here
Robinson - gone, no replacement
Crabtree - gone, no replacement
Lunt - gone, no replacement
Kopczak - gone, no replacement
Ferres - gone, no replacement
Chan - gone, no replacement
Lawrence - steady player, hasn’t progressed
Substitutes:
Faiumu - gone, no replacement
Patrick - gone, no replacement
Ta’ai - still got it
Wood - gone, arguably replaced
That team beat Wakefield 40-0 to win the League Leaders Shield. In almost every case the club has failed to replace those players with men as good or better.
Why is that? Who makes the decision to replace international standard second rowers with players from the Championship? And how can they possibly expect it to work?
And bear in mind that at least three of those players left because of HR mistakes by the club - something of a speciality at the Giants.
