| I've seen a LOT of criticism over the marketing of our club this year....
So I wondered whether there were any ideas flying about or if we could have a good old discussion about how we would do things differently. I know I have a few ideas but they aren't always financially viable.
The main thing we need to improve on is getting more fans...!!

| think this has been done to death on many occasions on this forum thats why not many comments, have a scroll through some of the previous topics... and if the club dont have a read on here at what has been put forward in the past then they are missing out on ideas too
lack of employees at the club for marketing is prob one of the problems, leeds for example have way more to do this kind of thing but we need to have an overhail on the social network side of things
release the squad numbers for next season on the giants twitter feed for example..one idea for you there! 1-22 or however many there is, would be a few tweets but gets interest!

| we have discussed it many times as brearley says, but the one thing most people seemed agreed on is that we lack a presence in the town.
there is nothing around huddersfield to make people aware of us, thats where i think we need to go, get players/big G/ cheerleaders etc in town promoting the club, get posters/flyers round pubs/clubs/workplaces/schools etc.
another thing a lot were agreed on is that we missed a massive opportunity with the university tie up, we should have pushed more to the students and people who work through the university.. i know there were some cheap tickets through the student union but not enough was done IMO.

| It requires investment - just like anything
Invest in advertising that's regularly updated and in somewhere with a high footfall - I.e somewhere near the entrance to Kingsgate just a billboard that tells when the next home game is and v who would be better than nothing
Employ a social media bod who actually knows how to spam twitter/Facebook/google+/Instagram etc
Go into the bigger employers in town (DB, Zeneca, Supermarkets, the Uni staff, NHS trust, Civic Centre) and direct advertise and sell to them
It's bloody hard work and constant effort but it needs doing - it's simple enough marketing but it's also simply not being done
If know one knows you've got a good product to sell, how the hell will they ever think to buy it?
Student Union is pointless - for one Hudds doesn't have one and the other is for the most of our season we are out of term

| Lack of Marketing staff - i think there is 2 from previously 8 - means there is very little in the way of marketing. I've mentioned it many times to the club to let the fans do it ! set up a group of volunteers who would be willing to give up their time to get into town and ask people :
A) if they are aware of the Giants
B) have they ever been
C) if so what would it take to get them to come again etc
Once we have an idea of what it will take to get people to come and watch us then the club can work on implementing them. As it is at the moment the club are ( or as it seems to me) simply relying on existing fans to bring new people. There is no incentives for new people to come, they need to be able to 'try before they buy' in some way or another.
There is lots that can be done, granted lots of them will probably end up costing or losing money at 1st but isn't the old saying speculate to accumulate?

| Sorry guys, didn't realise it had been done before
It would be great to work together to get some solid ideas together to present to the board, I think volunteers is a BRILLIANT idea!! I'd be happy to spend time on evenings and weekends spreading the message about our games. I think with the ST prices going up our attendance is bound to fall, so we need to be proactive!

| I've suggested it to James Brammer in the past and he has said what an excellent idea it was but has never been back in touch regarding getting it off the ground.

| Great, well this is where I hope to get things off the ground. After October we're in down season which means the marketing team will have time to listen to our ideas... during season they're swamped, so even though it's a good idea they just don't have time to look into it.
So my list to take to them is...
1. volunteers to help spread the word through the town centre and local villages.
2. Exclusive Squad release on Twitter for followers
3. Billboard in town which is ours exclusively for the season
4. Possible discounts for large companies who buy a certain amount of tickets?

| they've already done 1,3 and 4.
1. no one volunteered except Daz,
3. the club said It costs too much and no one notices it
4. they've done this before and no one bothers to buy tickets.
(2. brearley will miss it seeing as he didn't notice the tweets about the questionnaire )

The club has 10,000 followers on twitter but only 6,000 at games, so that means there is at least 3,000 'casual' supporters that follow giants on twitter! It's a great way to market

| Several ideas were mentioned in the latest issue of the fanzine, I got in touch with the club, one month later I was sat in a meeting with Ken talking about which ideas they were using and how they were going to be implemented! He said at the end of the meeting 'The fact fans, like you, have been suggesting ideas has 'reinvigorated' our marketing team and me'! It is clear the club is listening and wants all of our ideas!

| leeds rhinos have 56k followers on twitter.. maybe we need to take a look at what they are doing on that platform
hell even london broncos have 11k !
its a way of getting the message across and the club needs to think outside the box instead of the general boring stuff they usually give out on twitter and facebook.
its the best way of engaging with the public now.
town centre is dead.. and people would just walk past not interested if we were out handing leaflets
the whole squad were out in the town and villages at the start of this season remember...

| I'd like to look at a model where we sign up as club members for different incentives. I'd be interested in how the Australian models work. Living in London I will never make all the games but want to support in other ways. I always spend money in the club shop, pay into the cash bonanza scheme. I think there are other ways to involve members, as well as being season ticket holders.

| I'm sorry but Twitter doesn't really mean squat in real terms. I'm on twitter and I follow the giants, but that doesn't mean I read it everyday. Its just one avenue in which to get the message out, where many should be pursued. I would be surprised if even half of giants fans used it regularly if at all.
The key is lots of avenues, direct mail, pr and press, editorials, radio, tv, ambient media, events, reciprocal advertising, drip feed stuff little and often, then pick your big stories and know when to use them for maximum impact.

| maybe start with having a pre season launch like we used to do?
make it a big event, with things going around town, put it around the pubs and maybe have giants theme nights, a family fun day, meet the players etc and a main function in the evening, get some big names involved, maybe a few live bands etc.
make it an event for everyone not just a few die hard fans, get people talking about the giants even if they only have a passing interest..make people aware..make them want to be involved., offer them tickets for the first game if they aren't regulars...maybe get some of our partners to sponsor it or subsidise travel to our first away game?
i know it would cost and logistically might not be easy but if it gets people interested then why not?

| But the opposite of that is i know loads of regular fans, myself included, who don't use twitter ..fans aren't going to suddenly start going on twitter just to read what the club are saying ...there is also fans of other clubs and rugby league in general who follow every club i presume so its not just our fans or potential fans that follow it.
Do any of you follow Huddersfield's rugby union/basketball/american football clubs ? if you do/did and you saw a twitter or whatever from them would it make you want to go and watch them ?? simple question cos that's what expecting non fans of our club to do really.

| The blueprint has already been laid, first by Cougers, improved on by Bulls, posters have covered just about all of it on here, its been said the Giants simply don,t have the people, therefore the problem is of the Giants making.
We should now be attacking the Bulls fanbase, we should be rolling our battle bus right up to their front door, the same with every town bordering us, Halifax Bradford Leeds Wakefield Barnsley Oldham Rochdale (lots of Yorkshire folk were sold off to the Lancs in 1974), Schools first, then town , posters etc. then industry, businesses.
If the giants carn,t be bothered the they must suffer the consequences. They must have spent 5K on posting ST info last week mostley to ST holders, do we need reminding? waste of money, better spent on general marketing to none ST holders.
l have long held the opinion that we don,t have the right peopke in the back office, needs sorting.

| I was brainstorming a few ideas when I was bored and I pinged a few ideas to the club, the email I sent was long, dull and boring - here are a few points. Not all are probably viable, but some really are.
Quote Targeted at Businesses;
[* Huddersfield Partnership; offer MD’s a free family hospitality ticket and join the organisation. Any takers for tickets should be given a 20 further tickets per business to hand out to staff (or covering the whole company if smaller than 20 employees).
[* Business Awareness; Every business within a ten mile radius of the stadium should be given a newsletter at the start of the season advertising sponsorship, and with a fixture list and ticket prices.
[* Pubs; Offer a discounted commercial or season ticket for every Pub in the local area, to be raffled off or to be sold on game days.
Targeted at Casual Supporters;
[* Email; Obtain the email and address of any persons who collects a discounted single ticket. This should be used to stay in contact and keep them informed about fixtures and latest news.
[* Facebook; Rename the Huddersfield Giants Fan Page on Facebook to Huddersfield Giants. The Term ‘Huddersfield Giants’ has 8,831 likes on Facebook and the Fan Page has 3,000.
[* Twitter (1); Always use a short hashtag on every tweet, something like #GRL or #HGRL
[* Twitter (2); During games, keep fans updated with minute by minute updates, these will fill twitter feeds and increase exposure.
[* Twitter (3); Pin ticket information at the top of the Giants twitter feed, during the off season have a pinned tweet linking to season ticket information
[* Social Media; Put interviews with players and press conferences on twitter, Facebook and the website to allow casual fans to know the goings on of the club and keep them aware of games both in the past and future.
[* Above the Line Advertising; Put coupons for discounted single and family tickets in free Magazines such as HD Connect, which has a 162,000 person circulation. We're in a situation of non-awareness.
[* Big Games; Target five big games that have under performed in terms of attendance; Leeds, St Helens, Wigan, Warrington, Hull with Groupon tickets and group deals. Have maybe 5 tickets for £40 or 3 for £30. The difference between 2009 (Ave: 7,900) and Now is that we aren't getting more casual walk up for the Big Five. Those games were on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and people shown up. We haven't got a 10,000+ crowd in SL in about 3 years I think. We should be remedying this with offers and making the games more events. In the lead-up, players should be available on Calendar, BBC Radio Leeds, Five Live, wherever they can get exposure.
[* Unidays; have a discounted ticket offer on the Unidays website, and try and set up a deal with the University.
[* Twitter (Again); Always post a nice picture, decent res on every Tweet. It makes the tweets bigger and it makes them stand out more.
[* Twitter (Continued); Run competitions in return for new followers on Twitter, Hyde FC have 45,000 followers.
Make the tweets a little bit more uniform and nicer, so they stand out. PEOPLE CAN NOTICE WHEN THINGS ARE IN CAPITALS, BUT GET ANNOYED WHEN IT’S DONE OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME AND FOR NO REASON. So say something like INJURY NEWS: Danny Brough for #HGRL against @WiganRL - which has a lot of variation in Colour (links, hashtags and handles are in blue on twitter) and attracts the eye, with a picture as well to make it bigger.
[* Twitter (Me being Pedantic); Add the actual link to tweets, even better, obtain a short url like gia.nt or something
[* Walking Revenue; Have a permanent mobile billboard and drive it round a few places on matchdays, and the day before with Fixture, Ticket Prices and a Ticket Hotline.
[* Batley fans; when games are on a Friday Night, replicate the offer Batley have where ST holders can get in for a Fiver. A few might turn up and every little helps.
[* "Remember crowds are news, and big crowds are big news" Sonny Werblin - exposure is hard to come by, especially in Rugby League, and a five figure crowd would turn heads. 15,000 would get people talking.
[* Events; Have a Giants presence at the Festival of Light, Food and Drink Fair and (RETROSPECTIVELY
) Tour de France. Have fixture lists, players and even a few Cheerleaders.
[* Town Centre Tickets; Try and find a location for a town centre ticket office. People like convenience.
[* Outlying areas; Try and get an advertising presence in all local Train Stations and Bus Stations (Brighouse B/T, Deighton, Mirfield, Liversedge, Hecky, Clecky). These are the areas Town get 11,000 from - maybe a few might be Fartowners too?
[* Buses?; Perhaps organise a game-day shuttle bus going around the town and down to the ground. Olympique Lyon have their own Taxi Service, maybe we could do the same. Have the bus branded with Claret and Gold stuff, and charge a pound. Driving advert for the club.
[* Membership Scheme; Perhaps allow casual fans who are might increase their intake to rake up points than can be exchanged for stuff (Reduced Tickets, Mugs, Balls) that keep people who might not go enough to buy STs but enough to want a little bit more sweet.
[* HTFC; We may not be their biggest fans, but we should offer a season ticket from May to August to cover the off season, for, say £60. Offer 5 home games and a voucher to exchange for a £10 further ticket later on in the season
Targeted at Hardcore Fans
[* Exclusive Club; Try and get deals in Season Tickets that are worth having, involving Sponsors and perhaps discounts. Perhaps run more Season Ticket only events throughout the year.
[* Appointment to View; Give the team an ‘appointment to view’ so that fans can buy a season ticket and know they can get to most games. If possible (I know, sky, I know) keep to one day, and roughly one time. (I would suggest Friday, but what do I know)
[* Kiddies; Offer a season ticket, instead of free entry, to every child under 12 in the town for the Family Stand - which could be extended to all of the Riverside. When I was 6-7, having a season ticket got me excited about games. Have competitions like a kit designing competition and offer a season ticket to the top 500 or 600. Continue the encouragement to come down early with a few players outside the 19, face painting behind the stand and really get the kids going. Don't forget - the Riverside is the one shown on TV!
[* Teens; Replicate the above point, with a certain number of season tickets free (obviously a different competition), maybe 2 or 3 to every High School and Sixth Form College in Kirklees, and furthermore, make sure every High School and Sixth Form has a player in it at some point during the season, a Fixture List and a Poster for Big Games.
[* Introduce a Friend; Offer a really decent prize if you introduce a friend, like a trip to meet the squad or a signed ball or something, and also have 'taster tickets' in season tickets that can be exchanged, with a name and address for a ticket for a fiver. I
Targeted at Away Fans
[* Cheap Away Days; Offer to clubs like Castleford, Widnes and Wakefield a ticket swap where the Away Day prices are reduced both ways. Huddersfield take more away, Huddersfield get more in.
[* Thursdays/Fridays; Reduce the price if a game is moved to Thursday or Friday. '"

| As it stands, there are quite a few individuals putting their ideas to the club. This is great.
However, think how much more effective this would be if a group was formed to co_ordinate all these views and then present them to the club.
I was going to be sarcastic, but I'll play it straight.
There is such a group _ the Supporters Association.
We meet regularly with the top brass. However, we are a pitifully small organisation _ especially compared with other clubs. We try to enrol members and get laughed at. We put on events _ for free _ and few attend. We ask for volunteers (to help the club) and very few bother.
I challenge all of you with these great ideas to attend our AGM on the 14th October and join us _ perhaps you will join the committee. Don't like the chairman? Then stand against him.
We have lots of ideas about how to get people more involved but lack the manpower to carry them through.
Volunteer with us and you will be helping the club.
