| I just don't see what gilly offers us . Promise I get 100 per cent behind all players, and this is not a reaction to cas game - but I watch him each week and see little positive production out of him. He never has a nightmare game , but is that a good enough standard to be selected each week - and think of the players who he is depriving playing time to.
I think giants standards are higher nowadays than he offers us.
Am I missing something ?

| I thought Gilmour was one of our better players on Saturday to be honest. Made some good meters and as always is solid in defence further to that his versatility also came into play once Bruno went off injured.
The main thing about Gilmour though is his consistency which as NB keeps saying is key to getting silverware, he always gives 100% and I can't remember him having a bad game. Plus his experience in a fairly youthful side is paramount.

| Against Cas probably gained close to most of the yards for us and I still think he's a decent player who is very consistent and performs week in week out.

| The above points all fair enough - but is that the limit to our ambitions? Best player against Cas, experience , tackling, gives 100% and speed (not 100% sure with speed one)? When he came we needed him and his experience, and at that moment the fit was right, but for really for this season ? I think some of the others could offer all the above (including speed) plus, plus some more above...
Don't get me wrong - quite like him (except his funny voice), and he does a decent shift, but when did you last leave a game thinking he was MOTM...?

| Gilly offers lots to the team still ...as well as doing everything there is to do in the game and being someone the younger guys can look up to he's still got bags of energy, a great defence, is strong, makes hard yards going forward, offers cover in different positions, and knows his way to the try line !!
TBH it doesn't matter if he's MOM every game or not thats irrelevant to what he offers the team - i'm sure most Giants fans will want him in our team than opposing us !

Where the Giant's have succeeded over the last two years in comparison to the seasons before is in their defence. We all know in 2009 we had the best defence and in 2010 the second best and the reason for this is due to people like Stephen Wild (in 2009) and Lee Gilmour (in 2010) and the sheer volume of defensive work they get through in the number of tackles they make. Lee Gilmour was our top tackler in 2010 with 699 tackles add that plus his versatility, experience, commitment and consistency makes him a good player to have in the team.
In my opinion anyway.

My mind goes back to the try he created out of nothing against us in CC semi-final in 2009.

| 2009 exactly.
And like you guys I read the tackling stats - which could also reflect where oppositions see our weakest link in our top performing defence. Dont get me wrong - he tackles , and does the hard yards, and does not need to be the glory MOTM each week, but my point is he is a reflection of Giants 2009 and Giants 2010, and I think we should be looking at Giants 2011 and have half an eye on 2012.
Overall, I see him as a 'safe' player, and not a Trophy winning - I think we have moved up a level.

I suspect he's won more trophies than the rest of the team put together!
And boy, do we need 'safe' players if we're going to have repeats of the Cas match.

| We're having a right witch hunt at the moment aren't we. Hodgson only scores walk ins and doesn't make any metres (our top metre maker last season and given we're only 2 games in this year it's the most relevant stat to draw on). Gilly offers nothing to the team; aside from his work rate, speed, versatility and winners mentality built on years of lifting pots.
Dearie me today...

| Don't want to be anti Giully as that would be untrue and not purpose of my thread.
And know his CV and his class.
Point I am making is you guys are using words like solid, safe etc , and I am saying is what is he offering, that others could not, who are more part of our future?
Perhaps my ambition for Giants to be a sustainable (look up sustainable in dictionary) is greater than your happy to be good for a couple of seaons outlook.

| My ambition for the Giants is as lofty as anyone else. Perhaps though you might not be as knowledgeable about these things as the coach and, dare I say it, as experienced as one or two people on here who've seen these jerking knees umpty chuff times in the last decade after a poor result!
Given we've signed up Ferguson and have the wealth of developing and established talent in the pack and centres combined with Gilmours salary, not to mention Dodgy's who is definitely on a good whack, it wouldn't be a total surprise to see either of them leave at the end of the season but they both bring a lot to the team regardless of whether some people see it or not. NB is as good as anyone around here at judging a player ultimately and it's all about opinions but Gilmour has won more pots than anyone else in our team and he brings that with him. Dodgy made the most metres for us last season. These two snippets are dead set 100% FACTSâ„¢ and answer your questions.

| Yes - your facts answer the question, and simultaneously demonstrate your short term mindset.
The best generals prepare armies for wining the next war, not the last one.....
(Truth is I suspect NB will fade out Gilly during the season for your reasons above - and when he knows the standards of the opposition on match by match basis)
And I do rate Gilly - just don't want his trophy laden cabinet limiting our future

| But what evidence do you have? ATEOTD he made more metres for us in 2010 than any other player along with 25 clean breaks and 55 tackles busts. He only missed 8 tackles all season and made 141.
We're only two games in this season but he's made more metres and busts than Cudjoe for example. But we can't tell anything after two games really.
Dodgy is a clever player, he's great positionally, safe under the high ball and takes a lot of pressure off our forwards running the ball out from deep in our own territory.
We can make claims and counter claims about short term mindsets and barbed comments about looking up words in dictionaries all night but, ultimately, one of us is presenting facts based on actual events and the other one is quoting poems and making guesses about the future. You can't predict the future and you're basing your current opinion on two games of this season without taking into account anything that has gone before. That is what's known in the trade as a big fat jerk of the old patella...

You can't be serious, Gilmour still has plenty to offer.
What about Fa'alogo how do you assess his form ?

| Gilmour - am I missing something?
My answer is he appeals to those that take comfort from the past , like the present and fear looking forward.
Danril - your facts are good - like your passion - but look forward matey. True - can't predict the future, but can prepare for it . If you had to choose someone to stay , Leroy or Gillly , who would you and your facts pick ? QED - thanks.
Fa'alogo - this should be his year....

| You didn't ask who we would all rather stay between Gilmour & Cudjoe; you asked what you were missing because you couldn't see what Gilly offered. So what are you on about QED? What exactly have you demonstrated? Gilly isn't keeping Cudjoe out of the team, both have played the last two games.
They aren't my facts, they are the facts. NB is the coach, he picks the team and one bad result doesn't mean he is off his rocker. Had Kev taken Gilly's pass and gone over no doubt there would have been a thread about how Lee's big play experience did this and that instead.
All this comfort from the past and fear looking forward stuff; it's just further provocative tat and has no real value to it.

| I find the focus on Gilmour a bit odd as from what i have seen, he has never really had a poor game since joining us. I wont go into all the positives he brings as it has already been done. The one thing i do not think has been mentioned though is his running of angles either with or without the ball.. he is probably the most skilful forward we have and dare i say it has more ability although less speed than leroy and Lawrence. I would hope that his experience will rub off on those players mentioned.
the other thing i have also heard said of him is that he is a consumate professional who despite his age has kept his body in good nick and has played at the highest level for a long time. Bearing in mind recent events i think that professionalism would be something welcome.
I think he would have made a good captain and i would hope he becomes an important part of the coaching set up when he hangs up his boots.
I would say that he has a lot less to prove in giants colours than a number of other players.

| players like Leroy, Bruno, Larne, Ferguson, and all the other younger guys will learn a hell of a lot having a great player like Gilly around them.
Maybe i'm missing the OP point - is it trying to say we should get rid of Gilly cos he isn't goood enough for our squad ?? if so that is utterly preposterous !!

| So far a fair few people on here have answered what the OP asks "Am I missing something?" - maybe things would become more clearer if we ask:
"What more are you wanting from Gilmour?"
