| Quote ="Wes Hooligan"After 3 games? After 3 games under Sharp the team were unbeaten and top of the league. I do not understand why some people try to make out that success was 'in spite' of Sharp. That's just ridiculous and pathetic really isn't it.'"
Did they play against 3 of the top 4 the previous year though? I distinctly remember when we lost 7 of our first 7 under him too.
Two sides to every rainbow Wesley old chum.

I'd put that down to the KD and RT to be totally honest.
The fact of the matter is that Mr Sharp overstayed his welcome. If not then he would have left on a high and be immortalised for every. There are only a vocal few cheering from the rooftops for him - I ain't one - anyone who plays the then England Captain at Stand Off as a Full Back is putting himself down a path that isn't going to be pathed with gold.

| Quote ="Baron Greenback"It was a case of needs must. We didn't have an out and out fullback at the club. I think if you'd have asked Sharp if Thorman was a natural fullback he'd have said "no". But he backed Thorman to come good. And answer me this; if Thorman was so unhappy with Sharp's selection policy why did he follow him to Hull?
Personally, I think Sharp's biggest mistake in that respect was allowing Donlan to leave while retaining Reilly for one more year. I would've kept Donlan... there's no room for sentiment in business or sport, as Sharp found out soon enough. Ironically, I think that Sharp bowed to the overall fans opinion on that score, and he suffered at their hand later on.'"
We could have signed one or not released one. We had a perfectly good one in Paul Reilly and had another young lad coming through. Instead we played at least 5 different full backs. Thorman, Jenson, Hodgson, Cudjoe, and Elford spring to mind.

| As i understand it we had tried to sign a full back which got knocked back at the last minute thus went into the season without a recognised full back. that was not sharps fault.

I'd have a 'one in, one out' policy rather than a 'one out, maybe one' in policy.

We were not full cap when we got to the CCF and finished 5th. Our best in over 40 years. If you need to bag Sharp do it with facts not untruths - otherwise it looks like you are taking cheap shots.
Sad that a thread that could be positive about NB was spoiled from the start by the need to take digs a a previous coach

Comparisons will be made, I also remember how many 'Jon Sharp Fans' turned up to watch us play York City Knights in the CCup after those 7 defeats in 2007 - most of these people bagging Brearley84 weren't there.... I remember it well as it was the last game Nic went to before she had Tom.

So Paul Reilly really was a winger then? He'd played at FB for the earlier part of his career just waiting for the opportunity to shine in his natural position?

reilly was at the end of his career and there were concerns about his fitness. this was seen by the number of appearances he made for wakefield when he left.
If you were to argue that we should have kept Donlan i would be more sympathetic.

His limited appearances for Wakefield were du largely to a recurring back problem.

Which is related to Ftness age etc which is why the plan was to release him for a healthier full back. that then fell through and left us with thorman to fill in.

Sorry, can't see how pulling a back muscle is related to age. My daughter is one of the fittest people I know yet she has horrendous back problems.
In his last season with us Reilly was a far better full back than Thorman ever would be yet Sharp played CT at full back & PR on the wing. There was no let down in signings that season.

| I know what you're saying, but I thought we were talking about the season Sharp was sacked. Reilly should've been released the season you're talking about and we should've kept Donlan IMO. He was on the slide whereas Donlan was doing very well.
What do you think to the suggestion that fan's opinions swayed the decision to keep Reilly?

With the way people slagged Sharp for playing CT at fullback I can't believe anyone was swayed by sentimentality.

| I appreciate everyone's different opinions on Reilly, Sharp and Thorman ect, lets respect each others.
ATEOTD the trophy cabinet was hardly bursting at the seems, granted we got to the c/c final and finished in top 6, but what i'd love to be doing is coming on here in the next 2-3 yrs cheering that we won the C/C and won the SL play off final and league.
It's about time the sleeping giant awoke, 2nd best is so last year.

Isn't it strange how people select certain things from the big picture to try and make their POV and miss others out. To make the informed opinion you need all the relevant info you can get.

Reilly is a Huddersfield boy. That means he's going to get backed, much more so than Sharp or Thorman. I remember one time very early in his career with us that Reilly dropped a bomb that the opposition scored from and we lost by that score. He was absolutely gutted but the crowd clapped and supported him.
We all saw what happened with Thorman. He bore the brunt.
We always have our favourites and we always have the one we love to dig at. Our homegrown lads and our favourite Aussie. Then the Aussie we snipe at too. Waste of money this, all hype that. Mick De Vere is a classic example of people having a dig at a world class player because they didn't know anything about him and expected him to do things he wasn't here to do. The rabble need their heroes and their hate figures and they always will!
