| East Hull 22 v 36 Leigh Miners
Leigh Miners backed up from Sunday’s cup final victory with a hard fought 36-22 win against East Hull on Wednesday night to move them up to sixth in the NCL. Miners made a great start to the game when Jimmy Muir broke straight through the middle of the East Hull defence to send in a supporting Scott O'Brien who scored under the posts, Josh Ward converting to give Miners a 6-0 lead. The home side tied the scores up at 6-6 a few minutes later but Miners retook the lead again almost immediately when Darryl Kay went over, Josh Ward adding the extras to give the score 12-6. Easts again drew the scores level with a converted try to give the score 12-12 after twenty minutes. Shaun Marsh scored a third Miners try but again the home side responded with a try themselves to tie the score up at 18-18. Just before the break Martin Lewis went over on the right for a fourth Miners try, Josh Ward adding the extras to give the score 24-18 in what was a we score you score opening forty minutes.
Five minutes after the restart East Hull scored their fourth try in the left corner, the conversion going wide to make it a two point ballgame at 24-22. With the rain setting in for the night during the second half the game became a stop start affair with plenty of errors from both sides but after a little skirmish just short of the hour mark Miners took full advantage of the penalty awarded inside East Hull's twenty, Shaun Marsh running a nice line to go straight through a gap to score at the side of the posts, Ward converting to give Miners an eight point advantage to lead the game 30-22. The two points were wrapped up in the final few minutes when East Hull lost the ball attacking the Miners line, Lee Gittins picking up the loose ball to start racing down field, realising he didn’t have the legs he passed to a supporting Scott O'Brien who finished off under the sticks, Josh Ward adding his sixth goal of the evening to give Miners a 36-22 victory.
Miners are at home on Wednesday (10th) against Saddleworth Rangers, Kick off 7-30pm at Twist Lane.
