In 1982 Leigh beat Whitehaven to become RFL Champions. Thousands of fans made the midweek trek up to Whitehaven to watch Leigh clinch the title with a 13-4 win.

Nipped out of college at Lunchtime and we were on coach 67 from Monks travel.

I was there in the pram!

We went in some random pub in 'Haven after the game, and Eddie Bowman was in there, one of my all time faves....... talking to him all night.......happy days!!!

Four of us hired a car from Cooke Bros in Atherton and thrashed it up to Haven after work for the KO (non of us wanted to do it to our own!) - I drove there and back as I was the sober one in them days - stopped at a pub somewhere just out of Haven and the supporters coach (well one or two of them there were plenty) stopped too - celebrations all round - Happy Day's

Was an apprentice back then and got docked a half days pay (my boss back then was a crust muncher) but boy was it worth losing half a days pay to rub in it the next morning

he gave me s"£$e jobs for a week but it didnt wipe the smile off my face

An upset looked on the cards in the 1st half but we prevailed and what a journey back....

And some folk will have you believe it was Taggert who perfected the 'hair-dryer' approach to motivation.........nowt but an amateur in comparison!!

I finished work at dinner, meet up with Starbug and we also was on the convoy of coaches and what a day we had.
Still didnt feel like it did, when we bet Haven to win promotion to SL, what a game that was, a roller coaster ride from start to finish, went through every emotion going that day.
Seems like Haven play a big part in our history.

We was robbed in the semi v Saints. What a day that would have been with 2 unfancied teams getting to Wembley !

Steve worked for the sponsers- WINDOWCRAFT and we had free tickets and went Central park, Barry Ledger saved a try came over from opposite wing and tackled Henderson?, think it was Henderson he tackled.

It was Linda.

John Henderson was a fantastic player and was one of my icons as a kid and fellow centre myself.

Ledger came from nowhere but Henderson had support left and right. That would have made it 14-14 with 15 mins to go.

Leigh were superb that day. I cried on the 593 bus back home because we should have beaten saints !! AND got to Wembley !!

And cant forget the year before when Fax were winning the league with a Draw at home against Fev which ironically enough was enough to save them from the drop and enough to pip Wigan for the title.

I got left at the services on the way home, managed to blag a lift of a coach dropping off at the Red Lion West Leigh, the coach was from Manchester and dropped me off at the Red Lion Lowton just in time to miss time, still a good day

All those old enough to have seen us crowned the best team in the country should count their lucky stars.
