Because despite the million squid provided by Sky they continue to overspend. Not many if any have reported a profit. The article as I read it states the average loss reported by SL clubs is half a million How much longer can they continue like this....not long I would suggest.
IMO it is extremely concerning and the RFL should be having a say on how these clubs are being run financially. So in around a year, Widnes, Doncaster, Rochdale, Oldham, and Gateshead have all had problems. Now we get the start of 'issues' with SL clubs, namely Wakefield and denials of problems at HKR despite it looking like losses of over a million over 3 years. Am I missing something here or are the RFL/SL about to find themselves in a very big hole.

| SL is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow so not matter how bad they are they will always get the backing of the RFL ie London Broncos

Because there used to be a 50 % rule that meant you could only spend half of your income on the 1 st team , that was abolished 2 seasons ago and has resulted in a free for all orgy of trying to score enough ' playing ' points to avoid losing their licence
Now we know why Mr Lewis made the statement he did , any extra funds obtained from the next TV deal will be needed to pay the interest on some overdrafts

| Sky have the game by the short and curlys as no other broadcaster can come anywhere near what they can pay, I predict a reduced TV deal next time around.

| Is anyone really suprised?
I look at club accounts regularly (usually when some halfwit on the VT is telling Championship clubs how to run their affairs whilst their own club is financially crippled) and they are truly horrendous.
You can understand why they dont want relegation don't you!!
All this 'we can beat the Aussies if we do' bollox, its about self preservation.

Absoutley agree.
We here that SL gets better and better every year - introducing new teams - is this making it more attractive for other broadcasting companies? Certainly not.

Rugby League doesn't make profit!
Rugby is something you spend money on, not earn money from.
The only people who profit from RL is Sky TV. Hence Sky's (not the RFL's) desire for expansion. Everytime a club like London, Crusaders or Catalans enter the competition, Sky acquire another revenue stream by selling alternative advertising for a product they already own! And the RFL will do whatever Sky tell them to, because the current administration has virtually blackmailed clubs into selling their grounds and moving into leased property. This has reduced club revenues and make SL clubs wholly dependant on Sky funding, now if we don't do what Sky says, they pull the plug and Rugby League goes bust. If that happened now Salford, Cas and Wakey would be laughing their c*cks off as at least they have capital provided by their grounds despite all the flack they get for not being up to scratch.

| If Sky pulled the plug, all SL clubs would be up s--- creek, other clubs would be marginally worse off financially that is.
The big losers would be the semi retirement club from Australia who have graced our game over the last decade.Imagine the money Salford alone have wasted on over rated Ausies over the years.
No one will convince me Sky money has greatly improved our game regarding development or bringing on players to match the Aussies.I know lots disagree with me but I have my views and I'll stick to them.

Has it really improved the standard? the entertainment? the individual skills of the players?
Or is Superleague just an execise in polishing a turd based upon the masterclass in the art performed by football with the Premier League?
Exciting SL games are becoming an exception to the rule. I prefer the Championship games, probs because they have a bearing on my own team, but I would suggest that they are just as entertaining.
Superleague and Sky's appointed muppets Stevo and Eddie keep telling us how great SL is and how our game has improved. Well you saw how good it was on Saturday night, further behind the Australians than we were before the introduction of Superleague.

| I'm not extolling the virtues of SL - far from it, I wouldn't currently cross the road to watch it, and I haven't got SKY. I simply feel that SL standards have probably improved, over the years, but that Aussie standards are constantly improving faster. In other words, SL standards are possibly at NRL levels of about 2000, but unfortunately NRL levels are now in 2009!

| But still they spend spend spend, a skint Bradford paying £840K on a 31 year old non test playing Aussie rubbing his hands with glee, along with their numerous other Aussie signings recently, superb Academy there, NOT.
