| There is a thread on the VT discussing the merits of John Woods and Tony Myler
As part of that discussion I mentioned an incident in the 1989 CC semi at Maine Rd between Wire and the pies
It was the match that was won in the last minute with Joe Lydons huge drop goal
Just before he kicked that goal I recall a penalty being awarded to Warrington for a late challenge on Woody which resulted in him not being able to take the kick at goal
I seem to remember the kicker missing and not getting enough distance on the kick to go dead
This resulted in W1g4n getting the ball , moving up field and then Lydon dropping his kick from their own half of the pitch to win the game and deny John the chance to make an appearance at Wembley
Did I imagine this incident or are the posters on the VT wrong

| Lydon's drop goal wasn't in the last minute.
The score was 6-6 with about 10 mins to go when Lydon dropped a goal from inside his own half, 7-6. Edwards scored a converted try in the last minute for a 13-6 win.
Woods was immense that day. He played scrum half and outplayed Andy Gregory - he was desperate to get to Wembley. Gutted when the pies squeezed home.

| Both great players Myler was more a team man and organiser (and for me only Murphy was better at that) and could run a game but Woods was the greatest off the cuff genius I have ever seen play the game.
So in the greatest team both would be pencilled in at 6 but if Murph was 7 then it would have to be Woods.

| I was also at that game and would have bet my house that Lydon won it with a last minute drop goal. Honestly cant remember what happened to Woody, I had trouble seeing much from the Kippax to be honest.

But just before the drop goal did Wire get a penalty from a foul on Woody , but he was unable to kick it ?

I was there on the Kippax and I don't remember Woody getting taken out tbh.
I was probably still fuming from the last pen Wigan got. Wire were 6-4 up and were penalised in front of their own posts for an incorrect play the ball, 6-6. Lydon's dg, Edwards try and Woody denied a Wembley trip

| Well these posts keep cropping up and always make me think when I was sing around Manchester city centre.
John Woods was just an amazing player it is just a shame Fred wasn,t doing his videos when he was in his prime. John I mean.

I originally posted under the name Red Dwarf but the board went down and I couldn't be bothered so took the name starbug
Then back in 2004 I watched the episode where everything was ' Backward ' , It was the close season and I was bored so I decided to post everything that day sdrawkcab , I did whole sentances and everything and at the time I was posting on the Salford site
They for some reason got upset and threatened to ban me , miserable gets
Anyway glad it kept you amused for so long

| I too was at the game.
Woody was immense that day and did not deserve to be on the losing side.
Mylers confidence was undermined by the Aussies who got to him in series over here, not on his own.
Biased I might be but Woody over Myler eveytime.

Are you sure that you've got the right game there Starbug sir ?
I was at that match where Joe Pydon kicked a drop goal from his own half and it was definatley at Owd Trafford and I think it was the Premiership Final and a very young Tommy Martyn bagged a few tries and won the MOM when Owdham beat Sheffield in the minor premeirship .
Ive only been to one match at Maine Road and that was Barrow against somebody on a Wednesday night .
So have a check at your facts Starbug sir , to see which one of us has got their wires crossed

Yes we know that , what I want to know is , was there a foul on John Woods just prior to that DG that resulted in a different Warrington player attempting a Penalty but missing and giving the pies possession from where Lydon kicked his goal
