Can someone who knows about welfare law tell me why a foreign player who is over here on a fixed contract and who will most definitely have a private medical insurance contract with the club he is playing for, should or will have to pay national insurance. Its not as if he will be drawing a pension here.

I work in an accountancy firm for freelance contractors a lot who go working abroad or from other countrys coming over here and if they are in a country for over 6 months they then become liable for tax in that country, may be the same thing!!

If he broke his leg playing I would think, an NHS ambulance would take him to hospital, he would be seen by NHS nurses, X-rayed by NHS staff, etc long before his private Health care kicked in.

Anyone spending more than about 100 days per year is classed as UK domiciled for tax purposes and is liable to UK taxation rules. NI and PAYE are applied in full for all such persons.

Just because someone has private medical insurance does not exempt them otherwise about 4 million UK taxpayers would be exempt also!

Furthermore an assuption that someone will leave the UK as soon as they have finished a contract is also flawed as many people who first visited as an overseas player subsequently make their home in the EU (eg Phil Vievers, Shane Hansen and Roberto Martinez are just some who I know are still here).
