Correct Keith as I remember the Shaw Cup was one of the oldest compititions in the world , I know that you played in the 1st one but Tommys team won the last one

So give it back or find it Tommy

If he cant find the bl00dy £50 he's owed me for two years then you've no chance of him finding The Shaw Cup

matches monday, wednesdays and fridays

ALWAYS big crowds

some great games too, a chance for the local pub pi$$pot who talked a good game to see just how good he really was!!

sadly, no more, the only good all local amateur comp is the standard cup in oldham

They were great days as a 8/9year old going with my Dad each year watching the shaw cup on the training pitch and then the final on HP which always (or as it appeared to a 9 year old) to involve X11 apostles & Colliers Rest.

When was the last shaw cup? I remember it being played on Barla at some stage.

a local rugby league competition when most of te clubs and pubs put forward a team to compete for the shaw cup it was traditionally a pre season comp and lots of pro (well semi pro in those days) used to guest for thier local pub side. It was also the stepping stone for local talent to showcase as loads of players have turned pro for arious teams through that comp.

I remember playing when Stan Walls and Peter Dawes were the local amatuer refs. Didn't someone get sine die for hitting the referee.

That was a roughly what happened

So instead of side stepping a winger it was glass bottles

not bottles, legs, arms etc

The last winners were the Foundry run by Tommy coleman and i was informed that his son sean has got it. The joe Atherton trophy for m o m is in the safe keeping of Gary Flecther who won it last and was on the losing side that night

I played in the Shaw cup for The Jolly Nailor in Atherton, I was about 16 and had the bamboo shoulder pads on and took a bit of a hammering to say the least

Mad comp, I played for a few pub teams in the shaw. Very intense in early 90s. I played in ken gee cup as well, great games in late 80s and early 90s. rubbish now, no interest or passion.

Was the Ken Gee Cup not the equivilent in Pie Land of the Holden Cup?

The Ken Gee "Meyt & Prater" Cup was run along the same lines as the Shaw Cup but not as well run , The Holden Cup is just for Leigh Amateur teams .

I recall playing for Westhoughton against a full strength St Judes side in Ken Gee Cup, not exactly a pub team!

Played a couple of games in the Shaw cup in the late 80's.
Seem to remember there was a limit on the number of BARLA registered players you could have and I think you were allowed something like one pro.
It was a long time ago though.
