As that person has moved on why are we not employing a replacement?

The job description included stuff like getting old fans back and getting new ones in - not an impossible task is it? It sounded like a no lose situation - we employ a person to attract interest/money and the RL pay his wage

I know of a very experienced person who applied for the job and wasn't even given the courtesy of an interview. He says the communication was shocking for a prospective employer. The club know who is - why don't they give him a call.

Probably coz he might be good at his job and might show the board up

Don't know if that's the case or not - only the Board can answer that one. But surely if the club is to move forward they should be looking to employ experienced and committed people.

As there was no job description in full published with the advert I presume 24.7 applied and got a full one? 'cause the bit about old fans etc certainly wasn't in the advert I saw.

Well, there is experience, in the family. Neil's brother, Richard, was Commercial Manager, in our SL season, but didn't last long in the job. I think he found travelling from Wakefield a bit of a nightmare.

Not many can last long in that type of position at lower league or unfashionable clubs

Even the ones at big clubs are now struggling , the number of corporate sales info sheets I'v had from premier footy clubs this year has rocketed

I thought there wasn't enough employed for key positions at the club, and too many are spreading themselves out too thinly etc... Having someone there dedicated to a job to bring money in and paid for outside the club is surely a positive. I really don't think RFL could win with yourself even if they came up with a plan which matched your own word for word that you had pre written.....


Budget ? What will the person need ? A filing cabinet, a phone and a PC and off he/she goes. Wages paid for, and hopefully a couple of quid added to the pot.

And they will achieve what with that

Who knows, but more postive to have this position than not. Even if its to raise awareness that the club exists to some.
To basically say its not going to do anything is just purely negative.

Simple things to start with like the club being more internet savvy for example. If people buy tickets online you then have their email address (obviously with their consent) you then can send reminders about future games etc.
Create flyers that are paid for by company advertisements.
Supply questionaires to businesses and fans, and actually listen to them. A dedicated person could do this.
I'm sure a guy working 40+ hours a week could think of a lot more, and better things to help us.

The only cost-effective way of doing that would be to do it via e-mail and well, not many people are going to trust that. A 'proper' online sales booth costs thousands of pounds to maintain each year.

Better to have 5 people working 8 hours a week but with a budget and proper direction than one person who would probably spend 20 hours a week on the tinternet

Most clubs use email. If you have the persons consent to begin with, then there is no problem with trust and why wouldn't people want to know about the towns RL club and "special offers" ?
Anyone can set up a internet shop nowadays. Its not a 5 mins job of course, and it can cost you loads or little depending on how you do it. The most important bit is the encripted secure payment method you use for debit/credit cards. Widnes Vikings for example I suspect didn't cost that much to do but it worked very well when I used it (for our game of course

There you go, negative. If you employ right person that is motivated, and who knows that persons contribution could enable 1 of those 5 PT workers you mention to help too.


The only thing you have not mentioned is that the person is employed by RFL and would be spying on the clubs activities to bring us down once and for all

I doubt many people would be confident in sending their credit card details via e-mail (I know this as a fact from my own experiences as my Nigerian alter ego).

Don't forget that any online ticketing would have to be in conjunction with the LSV, so you can guarantee that's an E-Bay Shop out of the window.

The system that Widnes have got is actually similar to City's and various others - believe me, it doesn't come cheap.

Judging by the turnstiles on Sunday, the LSV aren't ar$ed about checking whether everyone's season tickets are valid, so I certainly doubt they'd want to get fancy in terms of match tickets.

Sorry matt, I wasn't referring to sending credit card details over email. Nobody should ever do that, no matter how convincing the email may seem. Even following links from emails that request your login details or credit card details you should stay clear of.
The Widnes set up was Paypal if I remember correctly. Its not expensive because I looked into it for LISA a while back.

Anyway, in summary of course someone dedicated to bringing money into the club would be a good thing.

Still has to have a live link to a ticketing system, server etc. Fair play to Widnes in cutting the costs in some respects by using PayPal, but that's only a fraction of the costs involved.

Think the fact is that a) we have to get used to the fact that we can't cut corners financially as appeared to be the case at HP b) no amount of marketing is going to make people watch a side getting thumped every week, and more so charge them £14-16 for the privelige and c) we need to concentrate on retaining existing fans before even thinking about attracting new ones.
