| So many to choose from, lots of obvious entries but one who may not get noticed that I think was Mr. Consistency in his time at the club was Ian "Chip" Jeffrey.
Sooo many others but "Chip" always sticks in the memory, he had one the greatest sidesteps I've ever seen.

| I've been watching Leigh since the mid sixties, and John Woods has to be no 1 for me. The team we had late 70's early 80's was a joy to watch with Dessie, Donlan ,Bilsbury, Big Alf, ect.. One of my favourites from the 60's was Rod Tickle he could shift and don't forget he got the winning try in the floodlight final v the pi
e's at Central Park

| Quote ="Pat Haddigan"Any of th'owd yeds remember Jim Humble?
Flying winger with a devastating sidestep and my first ever hero'"
Humble signed at the same time has a centre named Collins, early sixties I think.
But I go back to the fifties watching Charlie Pawsey, Reg Mossop, Mick Martyn, Stan Owen and his partner in crime Walt Tabern in the forwards.
In the backs players that stood out were Frank Kitchen, Brian Fallon, Brian Chadwick and Gordon Lewis, but one player who really stood out to me was a fuulback named Hewitt.
He was so brave it was unbelievable, what makes me say this is in regard to when Wigan played at Leigh and the amount of times he had to face Billy Boston striding down the middle towards him.
Time after time he threw himself at Billy, sometimes he made the tackle and other times Billy ran over him but Hewitt never shirked.
After one particular match Hewitt was praised for the amount of times he had brought Billy down, but in the press afterwards he said he had never been so sore after a match and he would be booking an appointment at the dentist, because of the amount of teeth he had lost in the collisions.
Memories.

Fair enough, though it takes some doing to post the same thing 10 times and even quote other posts in some of your replies too.

Brian , im sorry but you are wrong ,Humble was a few years before Mick Collins signed for Leigh , he was in the same Leigh team as Piet Botha a South African full-back , and a centre called Howard , as for Mick Collins he signed a couple of years later from Waterloo RU club along with Mick Murphy , they both became great servants to the club .

| stillinthepast, Jim Humble must have signed for us in the late 50's because I started watching in 1958/59ish and he was already an established player then. If you're talking about Mick Collins the centre then you're right, he signed early 60's from Waterloo RU along with prop/2nd row Mick Murphy.
Can't remember ever seeing Fred Hewitt but I 'm sure I must have done as he was definitely around in those days.
He is immortalised for me in the song I posted a thread about a while ago.
Now Billy Boston has the ball
And he's running for the line
Here comes full back Hewitt
And poor Billy's down for nine

Thanks for the correction Charlie, it was in my mind that Collins was signed at the same time, What's a few years when you are talking about players from 50 years ago.

That's the same Fred Hewitt, he would attempt to tackle anything, it was amazing the amount of times he brought Billy down when he was in full flight.

| My old man used to wax lyrical about Charlie Pawsey being the hardest man he had ever seen on a rugby pitch, this was supported by a story told to me by a friends father many years later who opposed him on the pitch

Tony was and Still is a True Gent off the field , ive known him all my life ,sat next to him at Pennington Cof E ,and Mank Road , and feel Priviliged to call him a Friend , wish we had a prop as hard as him now .

| 'Most revered'
This is a title which is reserved for a very special player and, there has been a lot already mentioned in this topic!
For my part John Woods would be the number one, he would figure in any team of my choice whatever nationalilty! Alex Murph is the best player I have ever seen however, to be 'revered' you need to respect the person and sadly, I've not always been able to do that with Alex!
Mick Martyn is one player the title certainly fits! not only was he a world class player his loyalty to Leigh was unqestioned! he could have left Leigh on many occasions to join a 'bigger' club and accept the rewards that would have brought but, he chose to stay and, as a supporter since 1954, i'd like to thank him for all the wonderful trys he scored in Leigh colours. On the GB tour of 1958 he scored 24 tries a record for a forward which has never been surpassed to this day!!
Of course Dessie is revered by all, everone respected Dessie, none more than his opponents!! His try scoring runs were sensational and his tackling was worth your entrance money!!
Jim Humble joned Leigh in 1960 from Oldham RU Club. I'm sure he only played for a couple of seasons and certainly never played with Mick Collins who, signed in 1963! Humble was also a very good Weights & Measures inspector too!
Fred Hewitt was a stockly built player as brave as they come. I too remember him tackling Billy Boston and knocking him into touch just as he was going to score in the corner, it was a mighty collision and I dont know who was more stunned, Fred or Billy!! It was played on a Wednesday night in 1959 in front of a large crowd the match ended in a 22 all draw, a great entertaining 'Derby' I do miss those games
Of course, none are more revered than 'Sir' Tommy a man who has served our club with distinction for eight decades! I cant think of a more worthy recipient than good old Mr Sale!!
