the roads even around the lsv are the responsibility of the council they dont grit roads that are not bus serviced and the lsv isnt at weekends, the grit at lsv is for the complex's walkways and paths not roads

Dirty nasty gas guzzling monstrosities.

I was off to work this morning and slid into one of these sodding things on Abbey street. (i only turned into abbey st cos the Avenue was unusually busy)

I was only in first gear but at the top near the hairdressers at the junction, my car failed to stop on the ice rink and I went into the back of, and nudged the car in front (if it would have been a normal car everything would have been fine but sod my luck it was an old land rover discovery with a towbar on).

Imagine my dismay when realising that my Alfa romeo with 500 miles on it to date possibly needs a new front bumper at worst case scenario due to the hole that the towbar made and there was obviously no damage to the said L/R.

And to bloody top it off the driver of the L/R decided to inform me that you need to leave more room to stop !!!!

Thanks for that bloody gem of knowledge

yes we can safely blame our incompetent Council for the state of the roads in Leigh I bet all the roads in Wigan are free of ice,and all the streets were our Councillors live will be free of ice and snow, the whole thing is an absolute disgrace, I have decided now to put all my bottles and plastic in my black bin by way of retaliation.

I think after travelling across Lancashire yesterday its fair to say the word 'Road safety' is a nonsense and why oh why bother with all these 'think bike' etc, etc road awareness campaigns to save lives on our roads only to jepodise EVERYONE (Pedestrians as much at risk yesterday as roads became lotterys) especially as the snow WAS forecast.
Is it not a councils basic duty to look after the main roads

Luckily the motorways (M6 / M61 / M55) had been ploughed as best as possible (2 lanes clear - better than just ignoring the problem) , its just a pity all the roads to them had to be left as dangerous as i've ever witnessed for many a year



I think the worst for me was Plodder Lane Bolton - the one the emergency ambulances use when going to Bolton Hospital - it was a death trap in its own right, the Councillers and there left wing penny pinching hangers on should bow there heads in shame, but thats the problem - they have no shame

Things took a backward step when the major roads (Trunk Roads as were) were handed over to Local Authority 'care' its all about saving money.
But lets be honest the roads around estates unless they were on a bus route never got gritted they may have had a token 'dusting' now and then but never on a regular basis, thats where the 'bumps' used to take place and most of those were damage only low impact.
In these days of savings and environmental issues I suppose its all we can expect, unfortunately.
I suppose theres one saving grace about not having a railway if whats happening on those is anything to go by

I think it is drivers who refuse to take the conditions into consideration and drive a stupid speeds that put pedestrians at risk. I have been driving all the time through this. My house is on a hill and I still have been able to get my car out. Take a bit more time to make your journey and think about what you are driving on. While I have been coming to Leigh and back I have seen people blasting up the outside lane that is clearly not safe. Common sense is all it takes.

Experience tells me that you can slag a blokes wife, kids, house etc.and he will laugh it off, but have a go at his driving and its world war three.
A minority of drivers make it dangerous for the majority of us that try and adapt to the conditions.

Just had to go out in the bad weather why oh why do some jerks driving 4X4's think they have a god given right to drive like a pirrock just because they have a big 4 wheeled drive car? don't they realise it still takes them a lot longer to stop in bl**dy snow, we should have a limit on what size car people can drive and the licence should have a stipulation that a person should have to take a driving test to advance his/her power and size of vehicle, the average driver in this country is cr*p,
oh and whilst Im on my soapbox if your car is covered in snow cklean the bl**dy thing off before you drive as driving behind you is like driving in a bl**dy blizzard, dont be piggin lazy

Was listening to a council worker today on the radio and he was asked why the roads (all over the country) haven't been gritted. He said it was because of the claim culture that we have in this country thesedays, if they grit the roads and there is an accident caused by unmelted ice/snow it can open up the council to legal action as they haven't done there job properly. But if they don't grit the roads and pavements and there is a crash or someone falls and injures themselves the council can put it down to an act of god.

I'd imagine ASDA haven't gritted the car parks for the same reasons
