| I suppose it depends on what you mean by tough.
Hitting hard legally, or being hit hard and just brushing it off is different to 'tough' as in nasty, dirty and would hold his ground in a fight.
I've read a number of articles about 'tough' players - and Allan Rathbone is there or thereabouts.
He was probably the toughest Wire player I've ever seen.
Cullen would always be in my team for all of the above defintions of tough. (I remember the Wigan match where Goodway was being sent off for flattening Cull and trod on Culls hand as he left the field. Cull lept up and flew at Goodway for all his worth. Can't remember if someone said there were screams heard from the tunnel. Those were the days......)

| Alan Gwilliam was as tough a half back as it could possibly get. Really good player but didn't mind dishing out some punishment.

| John Parry Gordon. For more than 543 games in the P&B he took an awful lot of hits when the game was brutal, and always found the guts to get back on his feet to play rugby.

Joe Price is the only player that I have ever seen, where he was booed by his own fans for being too dirty.
I was at a Bradford away game, where there was a mass brawl on the pitch. Albert Fearnly the Bradford coach ran on to join the fracas and was flattened by Price.
Fearnly had to be stretchered off the pitch.

| Joe Walsh was another character, who didn't play that often for the Wire, but was notably on the wing when we beat the Aussies at Wilderspool in the 70's.

| as a Wigan fan ones who stand out for me
Drummond,Tamati as they were hard as nails, Boyd and Nikau, cos they were hard and dished it out
I really like Mike Gregory, Bob Jackson too as they could both handle themselves but also well respected by opposition.
i was interested to see Morley only make number 17 on one list ![Smile icon_smile.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_smile.gif) . You must have had some absolute animals play for you on that front then
as a general rule i respect any players who steps out onto the pitch irrelevant of colours as the game is physically brutal at times, and you cant be soft to play RL

How hard was Joe Price? Having read a couple of comments on here, glad i never walked into him down the snooker hall stand on the way to the away end at Wilderspool
On a serious note though i used to play golf with a guy called Len McIntyre. He was an ex Wigan / Oldham and GB Hooker (to be honest he also played for Wire and Saints too but never mentioned that when we spoke about RL)
he always said Brian McTigue was the hardest player he ever played with, and regularly gave us examples from his past, and he didnt seem like a guy to mess with. Len when i knew him before he passed away was into his mid - late 60s, he was still in fantastic shape and had 2 hands the size of shovels, which he regularly threatened me with as a cheeky youngster ![Smile icon_smile.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_smile.gif) . He set off one day after a kid who had robbed something off the golf course, and he couldnt have shift too, so god knows how fast he was when he played RL

Bateman was far too nice to get involved in any kind of fisticuffs. I'd stick Joe ropati there or even put Mark Roberts in the centres(he certainly had the pace for it!)

On the pitch Joe Price was best described as homicidal. However off the pitch, when I spoke to him, he was quietly spoken and quite reserved. But you are right, you crossed him at your peril.

i asked my dad last night if he ever saw Joe Price play
bloody head the ball was the response
, absolute animal on the pitch and hard as nails.
Unfortunately i dont think my dad played with him (certainly didnt mention it), as my dad was signed on for your A-team / Colts but chose the pit instead of RL at the time. Alex Murphy was looking to sign my dad for you in the early 70s

In a game that I saw at Wilderspool, Price scored a try at the Fletcher St. end and then stood-up and poleaxed an opposition player who had tried to prevent him from scoring.
The ref. awarded the try, then immediately sent-off Price.
