| We've deregistered players in the past. Not sure if we was granted special dispensation though.
I always thought we must or what would be the point in the deregister in the first place?

| Have we done it before? I seem to remember Appo being deregistered to bring in Johns, but that was more for the quota spot wasn’t it?
I think we’ve also used a loophole for Chris Hicks and JMonas whereby we paid them there following seasons salary (or part there of) as a severance package, which did not count on the following seasons cap.
Maybe we can get Widdop in and give them Brown...

| Seems like a sensible thing.
The argument "its your problem so you have to deal with it" doesn't really help make SL a better product does it?
If other clubs think it is giving them an unfair advantage they can deregister their first choice halfback and apply for dispensation to bring in a replacement.

| There's a lot of hoohaa on the VT mainly Leeds fans saying it's not right but I'm not too bothered about it TBH and think it can apply to help everyone now that a precedent has been set.
I'm no expert on the cap (among many things) but perhaps it should be with the proviso that the player can't suddenly get fit for the play offs and on the basis that a ball hasn't been played. If Gale had been injured kicking off in the first game, then tough it's a capped, squad sport.

| I'm not sure about Currie coming off the cap, but Ben Harrison was certainly de-registered by Tony Smith. He wasn't happy about it and it caused bad feeling at the time.

No he was on the cap as full as it is a live cap the only way it would not count is if he was injured before the season and we deregistered him. Problem is you can pay them a reduced wage but it means somone could sign him etc. Thats why i think Cas have been able to get this agreed. No issue with it as everyone could apply etc.
Currie be left on was direct from Karl at the forum i attended

Dunno about this Toon. You deregister a player but not cancel a contract. He's taken out of the playing roster and in theory be classed as a internal club staff worker on light duties.

you may be right RD that was just my understanding from a few convos but we definatley didnt de register Currie. Suppose it would depend if the club wanted to keep the player or release them really.
Anyway looking forward to a good season 2nd Feb cannot come quick enough

| Didnt ben currie play last season? My understanding is that you can only apply for it if the player is injured before the season starts and isn't going to play a part in that season??

| The last one i can remember us de-registering was Hicks, he was on pre season training and then Joel Monaghan became available. We asked if we could pay Hicks off his full contract to bring Monaghan in which they agreed to as we hadnt started the season.

| I'm pretty sure we deregistered Benny Harrison the year he had loads of surgery and clean ups. We never re-registered him again afterwards though.

| According to League Express the clubs agreed in 2015 that any player suffering an anticipated season ending injury before the season starts can be taken off the salary cap, should that player return ahead of schedule, they will only be allowed to commence playing should the club have space in their cap.
This was extended in 2018 after clubs voted to include any season ending injuries from mid season internationals.
It only mentions Dom Manfredi as having used it so far, although there may have been others. Either way it would seem Currie would not have been taken off cap as he played games in 2017 & 2018. Harrison could have been taken off in 2016 as his last game was 2015. Grix and Hicks predated this ruling, I think Hicks technically retired due to injury which allowed us to take him off cap, he got a pay out and went on to play another season or so NRL I think?

It's a perfectly sensible rule. Although it runs the risk of the less wealthy clubs overstretching themselves financially, but then again we don't need a nanny RFL as they should concentrate on arresting the demise of the game.

Wasn’t Harrison ruled out for the rest of the season but then Wakefield kindly agreed to take him on loan even though they knew he’d not be able to play for them? They kindly paid his wages to make space for you to bring someone in?

| Don't see the issue with it, or why everyone is upset about it. They've lost a key player to their team and also compounded by being in a key position. Prior to a ball being kicked especially.
Now there should be a caveat that they must replace like fo like not use money got a player in another position, which I have hear cas maybe doing. That's against the core principle of this ruling and should not be permitted.

Part right, he was loaned to Wakefield which left space in the cap to bring in Sandow early. He wasn’t ruled out for the season though, his debut was delayed due to complications, but he went on the make a few appearances for them I think.

Spoke to Ben at the time. The club proposed he was deregistered while he had the surgery that all needed doing, with a view to getting him back on the books the next year. That was the thin end of the wedge for him. Once he was off the books, it was always going to be hard for him to get his contract renewed, regardless of what was agreed in good faith.

funny you should mention him, i was wondering yesterday in light of riley's retirement what his official status was, i don't recall any retirement statements or anything like that, a sad end to a cult hero.

Retired from sport. Think his injury insurance package meant he couldn't return to the game. A great shame. Training to work in the real estate game now.
