| I'm no fan of Wood but let's be honest comparing 2017 to the year before the Global Financial Crisis is a bit like saying the lost city of Atlantis is not as good as it was before the sea covered it up.
Wood has done some good and almost certainly kept things stable when necessary in hard times. Whether he is the right man to take us forward from here is another question. He's had his time and done his job, let's look forward.
Kind of reminds me of another situation involving a man in charge... can we start such a petition as well?

| The decline of player participation is the massive problem that needs addressing by the RFL.
I looked at some data from Sport England for 2016 - RL is ranked 27th for participation. It's down 39% over 10 years, and down 9% vs 2015.
Here are the sports that are ahead of us for participation (some I'd regard as pastimes, but the point still stands):
Sailing, Shooting, Gymnastics, Rowing, Weightlifting, Hockey, Skiing, Angling, Table tennis, Mountaineering, Basketball, Cricket, Boxing, Netball, Rugby Union, Squash, Bowls, Equestrian, Tennis, Badminton, Exercise movement & dance, Golf, Football, Cycling, Athletics, Swimming.
The next 5 sports behind us on the list are all growing in participation. We're sliding backwards and it's not going to stop anytime soon.
This is particularly pertinent when considering some of the other threads at the moment discussing the quality of Superleague, and the perceived overall drop in the quality.
Most things in the list are linked in a symbiotic relationship.
Watching a sport and being inspired to play it (see the Olympics) is a massive part of getting people to play at grass roots. The more people that play a sport, the more funding available, the greater the talent pool, the better the overall quality of the players in the professional tiers (over time), etc etc...
Sports die when people stop playing them.

| Not a fan of online petitions. Much too easy for those who just love to knock without knowing much.
It doesn't even give an option to say ... I think he's done a wonderful job. The huge Nigel Wood Fan Club are bound to respond to this.

| Team sports at grass roots level need a lot of organising, dotted I's and crossed T's just to get on the field. Help is required through volunteers. In today's society this is increasing more difficult as less people are willing to put themselves through this pain. Add to this the costs to operate and we can see that grass roots in all sports is suffering. Those sports with less participating individuals will inevitably sound the death knell for their professional counterparts.
In this modern age how many young people are rushing to damage their bodies in order to compete in a sport, I guess many less than there were when I was a young free spirit.
Its all very sad

| When you look at the list of sports that are receiving participation money from the sports council you see that most of them are Olympic orientated. All things to do with shamateur athletics & gold medal possibilities are what interests the likes of the people on the sports council & their advisers & lobbyists so it might account for why & where the money is spent.
As for our place in the list, i suppose that could be accounted for by the greater choice of sport on offer in 2017 to the man in the street. Many of those sports were not of interest or not available to the working man 30 or 40 years ago ,but how many working class men are into golf these days instead of standing on draughty terraces watching a group of blokes running about ? The main appeal for many sports now has been hijacked by sky sports with 24 hour sport available world wide.
As for exposure ,it isn't just RL that has lost a lot of exposure due to sky pay to view....you only have to look at cricket ,most football, darts & kabbadi which you need sky sports to view ,to such an extent that women's football is now the darling of the BBC...& ,of course, not forgetting athletics.

| I am still surprised that the RFL / Super League have allowed, without challenge, the premier Women's football league to be called "Superleague".
The meteoric growth of Women's football in terms of coverage and awareness in the last year is quite staggering.

| Notwithstanding the reduction in sports funding, the debacle that was the Stobart advertising and the Mushy Peas brand association should be enough for his position to be questioned. Instead he gets a pay rise. Why? What other organisation is going to poach him?

A lot of the things being complained about isn't just down to him, the Superleague clubs voted for a lot of these things including structure changes, licencing changes, salary cap stagnation, club call, Stobart Sponsorship, Super 8's, new TV deal etc etc. I think Draper will now be in charge of landing sponsorship deals for Super League going forward as well?
I think it probably is time for a change at the top, but the witch hunt that seems to follow Wood about (that's not aimed at you Wires71) seems a bit OTT to me.
Its a big 5 years coming up for the sport in this country, two world cups, a new UK TV deal coming in just after the 2021 world cup on home shores and an increasing French and North American presence in the British game. The sport needs a clear roadmap in place to decide where it wants to go with this - and it needs a strong person at the helm. If a change is needed, now's the time to make it.

A much more serious error was not registering 'Rugby World Cup' when RL started such a comp in the 1950s(?).

On its own, nothing. However, the other game does not call its comp, the Rugby Union World Cup. They registered the simpler name, and their freedom to use it compounds the impression that there is only one rugby. I've lost count of the number of people, especially non-Brits, who, when I explain the sport that I follow, say 'I didn't realise their were two types of rugby'. Alternatively, I'll tell them I'm going to the World Cup this year in Australia and they say 'I thought that was in Japan?'

They have every right to call it rugby. That is the game. It was the first game.
In Australia and new zealand the term rugby is only for union. It's is completely excepted, that is what it is.
League is altered breakaway version of this. It's not rugby, it's rugby league.
Rugby as a term only creates confusion over areas that rugby league isn't established. That isn't the fault of naming. It's the fault of 2nd best promotion.
25 years ago union was on its knees. League has the opportunity to take the mantel. Union bosses acted to take the sport of rugby global. League sat in its pool of UK Aus comfort zone.
Anyways back to the point. Rugby league isn't rugby.

| I think there are several episodes that have occurred over the last 20 years that have allowed RU to progress to where it has. Firstly, turning professional stopped the talent drain to League more or less overnight & meant we needed another strategy to recruit players. Secondly, at the top level, RU is associated with the top business brains in the country & is marketed accordingly, so can attract sponsorship from worldwide brands which is much more impressive than a mobile phone number on a placard offering to remove rubbish & tidy your garden. Our game needs marketing effectively ,which i am surprised not to be seeing much evidence of from our flat capped pigeon fanciers in charge. Our biggest business deal of the last 20 years has been to sell our soul to sky as a ratings slot filler. Thirdly, RU has actually improved its on field game a lot in recent years, especially at club level ,so much so that their game resembles the exciting game that RL used to be until our powers that be messed about with the rules so much that "game management" has turned out to be our version of kick to touch & line out every couple of minutes.

| Quote ="rubber duckie"They have every right to call it rugby.
Rugby league isn't rugby.'"
Whilst I don't disagree over the RFL's historical marketing weakness, the World Cup mistake is an example of that very thing. You also misinterpret the birth of 'Rugby' as an organised sport. The game 'created' by William Webb Ellis is Rugby, but the codified Rugby Football Union was formed in 1871. The format of the game changed repeatedly over the following 20 years even before the split. The 1895 split added the Northern Rugby Union, which changed its name to Rugby Football League 30 odd years later, and encompassed further changes to the format. RL has every right to describe itself as Rugby. Union has one format (code) of Rugby, League has a different code of Rugby. Whatever happens down under is the equivalent of folks in many countries (including this one) calling Association Football 'soccer'. Both RFL here and NRL down under continue to use the word 'Rugby'. If I discuss the sport with fellow Northerners they'll talk about 'going to the Rugby,' simple-as. No need to add 'League'.
Of course, NtW is also correct that both codes of Rugby are also forms of the wider sport category of 'Football'.
