| Sam just didn't want to stand around with his hands on his hips/knees waiting for something to do, with maybe 4 carries and 6 tackles per game, game after game after game.
He wanted a shot at playing in their World Cup and got it, and a few people have said he was better than those he nudged out so got it on merit and actually played fairly well in the gametime he had. But it was boring to him.
So why waste a short career playing in a sport that bores you and with a load of negative people around you or in the media?
He's come back to a sport that physically tests him, with 25 carries and 35 tackles per game, every game, and even then the physical challenge of getting back 10metres at every tackle six times every set. And a sport where he's loved!
Ford comes across as an upset little girl who's just been dumped. Burgess couldn't stomach continuing in that sport, and that's a different thing to what Ford implied!

| Reading the hysterics from some quarters of the yawion brigade really irks me.
I don't know why I get hacked off - it has been the case for a long time that when it doesn't go right they look for a scapegoat.
Burgess is that scapegoat - why England didn't win the world cup (it was his fault single handedly if you read some rags), why other players underperformed, why there was unrest. You name it - it was Sams' fault.
Ackford is a total disgrace, joining that bastion of union snobbery perpetuated by Ian Robertson and John Inverdale.
The Burgess episode has parallels with that surrounding Andy Farrell.
Many of the establishment looking to see them fail.
What was their best position ? Flanker / inside centre ?
Union seemed to be looking for quick fixes in both these cases.
They never saw either player at their best.
Farrell was too old when he crossed to the dark side.
Burgess simply didn't have the time to adapt, and I could easily see the situation where - although he had support from many - the fact that he came from league would always be held against him by others (often not players, but ''establishment''). Couple that with the fact that the forward game is totally different and it was unreasonable to expect 'earth shattering' performances.
Could Burgess have been a world beater in Union? Absolutely.
Would he have enjoyed the journey getting there? Not a chance in h3ll.
I do feel sorry for Lancaster and Ford.
They placed great expectations on Sam and it didn't work out. Those expectations were unrealistic.
Ford sounding off is just frustration.
His son is just backing up his dad.
It would have been far better all around if mouths on all sides had been kept shut, but again the first spats were thrown by media hacks supporting yawion, so you really can't blame Sam for hitting back.
Just disappointed it was in a paper like the Mail.
Welcome back Sam.
You'll tear it up with Souths.

| Sam Burgess is the best English rugby player of either code. The RFU clocked this, and with their home World Cup coming up, clearly saw the opportunity to make him some sort of marquee acquisition for their game. Regardless of what happened at the tournament, and all the subsequent blame game, Burgess took their money and doubtless did his best, but whether or not he was 'ready', he simply HAD to have been guaranteed a place in the squad, his switch from RL just doesn't add up otherwise.
Nobody, Burgess included, comes out of this with much credit - if England had somehow won it, or even made the final, would he have come back to RL so quickly? I'm not sure he would have, despite his recent pronouncements.

| A part of the Yawnion problem was to alienate the players plying their trade outside of the English league. I was told by a Yawnion fan that this was a decision that allowed Burgess to get a place (I don't know if true). If that is the case then they are bigger fools than they are making themselves look. The world Cup on home soil and they effectively ban players from the squad giving a place to an untried player who has just switched codes and then they play him at different positions. They got what they deserved

| To be fair sam is no innocent party in this, as good a player as he is he was always going to struggle to have a massive impact. With only 12 months to learn he was never going to get into the pack so a centre position waa his only real option. Which he did Ok in.
He went got paid and returned eventho he was going to be given time as a flanker at Bath with that being seen as his best option with plenty of time to master it. He chose to return irrespective of that.
His treatment has been terrible and undoubtedly the main reason for him switching back. Great for us and a loss for union for sure.
The whole situation.is both the rfu and Sam being badly advised to think he would be instant success and win the world cup and neither side come out of it smelling of roses.
Ironic if he leads England rl to win the world cup...
