| I think Shaun Wane deserves a lot of credit for his results. In just 4 years since appointment in 2011.
Near on 70% win record.
League Leaders Shield 2012
Grand Final Appearances 2013, 2014, 2015
Super League Wins 1 (Achieving Double in 2013).
Challenge Cup Wins 1 (Achieving Double in 2013).
And all this by an alleged "thicko" and "thug". Managed the transition of big names leaving and youth stepping up.
Shows what can be done with good coaching and succession planning and strong recruitment.

| I don't think Wane is responsible for much of that success to be honest. I think it's more a reflection of the work Michael Maguire did there to be honest. Wane has broken it apart somewhat and has singlehandedly cost them titles. Grand Final last year was a prime example, they could possibly have given Saints a game last year given our starting halves and yet he winds them up so tightly that it was only Mose scaring them from the kick off that stopped them all being sent off after the first tackle. Wane is too focused on physicality, aggression, recklessness and violence (His words). Wigan under him are built on a false platform. Hit high, get false numbers into the tackle, by that I mean having two or three additional tacklers join after the initial collision with the aim of injuring the ball carrier and slowing the play the ball down. They are still deliberately attacking knee joints and their discipline at the play the ball is an absolute farce, holding down when tackling and moving off the mark when in possession. Their whole gameplan can be undone not by a good opposition, but by a half decent refereeing performance.
If Maguire stayed, Wigan would have two more major trophies now. That's Wane's impact for me, he didn't build that side, he's slowly destroying it.
Wigan as a club however I do have more respect for. The youth system is the main reason they are still a force. Their youth system produces not only their strong first team, but half the teams in the league as well. Everyone benefits from it. If only we could get a few more teams up there with them (Saints and Leeds are now, but need to maintain it, not just have golden years every so often), we might win an international series every now and again. They can lose first team players and not even notice it, they can throw kids in for big games and they are as good as the internationals they've replaced.

No not at all but we haven't won anything or got to any finals for two years. We have been a shambles of club this season. ...
A huge cloud still hangs over the club for me...
But this wasn't a "Credit to Tony Smith" thread. ...

How about Bateman- in Terry's ' talk to me about' interview after the game I was willing him to ask 'talk to me in english'. It was like an interview with the missing link. I think I got an 'ug' but apart from that I couldnt make out any of the other grunting noises.

I quite like to see the physicality and they have to play within the rules as enforced by the referees. It's a shame few teams match their physicality in return. He has obviously found a formula that works and had great success in getting to Grand Finals. I can't knock him for that. With his "simple" tactics he makes a mockery of all those excuses and bluster that TS comes out with about consistency etc.
He's won all 3 pots within 4 years at one club. No other current SL manager has achieved that not even the messiah at Warrington. I wish Tony Smith would "destroy" our side like that.

I could hardly understand a word the lad was saying. Decent player but a little too punch drunk for a lad in his early 20s. As for the comment re nw accent isn't he from yaaaarrrkkkssshhhhiirrrree? I know he was signed from brat ford

| Shaun Wane doesn't care about fans of other clubs disliking him. He cares about Wigan rlfc and getting them to win trophies. And his record is as good as any other coach. He won the double in 2013 with a team nowhere near as good as the one we had in terms of quality so he obviously must be doing something right with the players he has.

If they ever make a remake of Deliverance ... I'm sure Bateman could learn to play Dueling Banjos.

That may be so but it's about time we coached our players how to speak properly to the media. They have time on their hands to do it.
If you think it's a nonsense idea listen to Andy Farrell or Jason Robinson. There is no doubt whatsoever they have had "media training" or in old school speak elocution lessons. ....
Eorl crabtree gets ridiculed for trying to sound posh but he doesn't make me embarrassed of our sport when he's on national tv.
The days of players saying "we addt stick tu gem plan gerrin arm ressul n get thru us sets" is just not acceptable anymore its lazy unprofessional and off putting to new audiences.

| A coach should be judged on trophies won. In the last three seasons wane is well ahead of the messiah. I'd kill for a grand final win by any means...and it still annoys me how we backed off signing Bateman...probably because he doesn't attend church of a Sunday. I thought wigan would be a laughing stock under wane, he's proved a lot of people wrong, fair play to him.

I find it uncomfortable listening to some RL players too, then I realise that the issue is with me. If that's how they speak as typically average/below average IQ northern working class lads then so be it. Who are we to judge.

Do you really think he "hates Wire" or really doesn't care about anything other than success for his side? Which after all isn't such a bad trait as a coach.
He has the wood over Smith for sure.

| Wane encourages his side to take rules to the absolute limit knowing that refs will only blow up every now & then by which time his side may have a healthy lead. Unless the rules of the game are policed properly all teams that use the same tactics will prosper.

Wane has rebuilt the side from when Maguire left. Wanes team of today only includes six players from Maguires Cup winning team of 2011 with two of those Joel Tomkins and Lee Mossop only just returning. Wigan are the youngest team in Superleague and Wane has to take a lot of credit for bringing those players in. He has also reduced the number of overseas players dramatically at the club during his tenure, surely a good thing for the game in general. Last night Leeds had five overseas players in their team and Saints had four. On Friday Wigan had one.

| Phil Clarke made a good point in commentary regarding the school setup in Wigan and how it consistently produces great young talent for the pies to pick from.

| Saddened really ought to seek psychiatric help..... Those young players which you praise have mostly, been brought through from junior level by Wane, he has not just joined the set up... In 2003, after working as a scout for the club for three years, Wane was appointed as coach for Wigan's under-18 academy side.
