Do games like tonight mean any more that others?

There was a point when playing Salford, and other local teams meant a little more, in my opinion. I don't know whether I've fully bought in to the 'every minute matters' mentality, these games just lack the draw and excitement of yesteryear. I feel clubs (us especially) are playing for placement at the end of the year, as opposed to going out to win every game.

The local rivalry has died down, the only one with a real sting to it is Wigan, even Widnes seems to be half paced on our part.

What's missing? Can the rivalry be recaptured and regenerate enthusiasm for these games? Or is it just me, getting older with a shade of nostalgia of the 'old days'

Nostalgia does play a great part, the memory of the many games and days out with mates home or away, working yourselves up to fever pitch, team talks in the pub, woe betide anyone mentioning defeat, great times I agree though as you get older things do mellow and never appear the same, well they can't can they? yet I still enjoy my rugby, the Higham affair, possibility of our own signings, the upcoming Sts, Wigan games or will we wont we make the top four?

Awhile ago before finally dumping my video I played back old some tapes with many familiar names on them, though great to watch again and full of nostalgia it wasn't the utopia I had dreamed about in fact some were awful don't mention the pitch, sometimes I think I would like to return to those days but as great as the memories were I can't.

You asked what is missing I think it's the overall lack competitiveness the knowledge that we are in for a good game, that is down to the clubs themselves.

Today it's all about Salford and two points, good post.

Can't say I've ever considered Salford as rivals as such. They might see it differently though.

Most of your 'new' fans probably cant remember the recent days of early 2000's when Warrington (pre Simon Moran and Halliwell Jones) weren't actually very good and were often found in relegation scraps alongside Salford.

I remember that single year very well when relegation was a possibility. I also remember Salford beating us regularly around that time, particularly on Good/Bad Friday. We were never relegated though.

You may have misunderstood me, today 22/05/2015 8pm kick off our Rivals for two points are ?

I can remember around 1968/9 Salford putting Fifty past us at Wilderspool without reply, wire were on a sharp decline, Salford had a very good team, I'm just grateful to S Moran and the club for what we have now.

If we're not in the top four any team in the top four whoever that may be.

Must admit Sts and Wigan has something though.

Never considered Salford as "rivals" but I only started watching in 82. I can say I have never looked forward to playing them, just cannot get excited by this fixture. Travelling to the Willows was also way down on my bucket list as it was usually a deeply depressing affair.

In that order, and that's it. I consider the other top teams such as Leeds bigger rivals than Salford.

Sorry I was just musing old times nostalgia and all that, sad not being able to bring it back so a return to reality that is tonight's game with Salford being tonight's rivals.

The Salford team with Watkins and all was worth the entrance money, looking forward to seeing Moz again.

Our biggest rivals recently have been leeds as we have met them in several finals and semis. However, if the question is who is our derby?, then the answer is widnes and that's a fact. And we better start turning up at their place with the attitude of it being a derby game!!

Always was and always will be Wigan just because of the history between the two clubs. Anyone remember "World War 3 or the cup final at Wembley when good old Des Drummond t**tted Kevin Iro?

If you ask Wigan for them it will always be Saints, if you ask Widnes it will always be us.

Tbh, there's more of the old guard that go to games now than the post-2009 fans. They've all sodded off as we haven't won anything in a while

Widnes by a country mile for mine.

wigan for me..and always will be..then sts...do look forward to our tussles with widnes leeds hull etc but beating wigan is special.. (2009 CUP SEMI )

Have supported us for over 50 years and neither myself or any of the lads I went to the match with ever considered Widnes as our main rivals, it was always Wigan, I don't consider the Widnes game any more important than beating Salford say.
