| Rhys Evans has been picked in the Wales RLWC squad, which represents a bit of a turn around from nailing his allegiance to England a couple of years ago.
Let's hope this has been done with his consent, and doesn't lead to an embarassing withdrawal.
Good luck to him anyway, oh and to Mr Williams too who is also named in the squad.

| He committed to England a few yearso ago, then changed his mind this season and said he'd play for Wales. He hasn't represented either at senior level so there's no issue, and he's reached the right decision I think.

Yet he was born in Wales.
Jan Molby was born in Kolding, Denmark but he doesn't sound Danish.

I mean't his name, I've never heard him speak. It was tongue in cheek to take my mind off "the trains will be packed" nonsense on the other threads.

| Evans is one of those cases where he ought to have justified claim to dual-nationality. He was born in Wales but moved to England at school age and was happy to call that his new long-term home. People like Mo Farah for example in Athletics are accepted into the GB team on this basis. I'm much less willing to accept someone like Rangi Chase who moved here as an adult and is here to work.
Also interesting is people's view on switching between nations. If you have geniune roots in more than one nation, I'm also comfortable with playing for more than one nation, providing any switch takes before an agreed cut-off for each tournament.

| He can play for Wales in this World Cup and England in the next one if he breaks through anyway can't he, or has that stopped being allowed now?
The whole set up is a total farce.

That's a fair comment, and the UK is an anomaly in that respect because four countries share one passport. My distaste is for the switching. Once you've played for one country so shouldn't be allowed to play for another in my opinion.

| At a fans forum last year, he said he had chosen England because he wants to be a part of the big games- perfectly understandable and sums up why we need to bring back GB.
I do wonder whether players like Evans and Currie have been told that GB will return in the next two years, which is what has led to them deciding to play for Wales and Ireland respectively. I do hope so.
As SEB says, dual nationality is a part of modern society, particularly down under. You tell Anthony Minichiello that he shouldn't be playing for Italy, or Civoniceva he isn't Fijian, you will get a blunt response. They are equally proud of being bought up in Australia and their family's heritage.
It happens in every single sport, particularly athletics yet only rugby league fans seem to get wound up about it.

I'm sure Rangi Chase is also equally proud of his English heritage but fans don't like that.
The fact is Minichello is an Aussie who would play for Australia if he was good enough, he's not so he chooses the lesser nation.
Same as Rhys Evans if he plays for Wales, he might have the ability to play for England in the long run but at the moment he isn't going to get in the squad so he chooses Wales as a stepping stone.
People don't mind it apart from when its their country being used as the second choice, which is why there was such uproar over Rangi Chase - he would have played for NZ if he was good enough but he wasn't so he chose England.
As long as you're willing to accept there's a natural pecking order with Australia at the top, New Zealand second and then other countries below then there isn't a problem.
Having said that, respect to certain players that turn down the chance to play for 'second choice' team, like Steve McCurrie could have played in teh 2000 World Cup and Toa Kohe-Love was checked out by GB because he's eligible and would have got in the team at his peak but he wasn't interested.
What will really test English rugby league fans is when you get a young English player moving over to the NRL like the Burgesses have done, being a real success, then realising he's good enough to play for the Kangaroos and qualifying for them on residency.

| This will do Rhys and Warrington well for him to get a few games in. Will be nice for the Evans lads to play together again and a proud moment for their mother to savour.

I said back in October when I was watching France v Wales that Rhys must be sat watching his brother on the telly filled with envy.
At the end of the day the average viewer won't know any different when it comes to nationality etc when they watch on telly, just like most people aren't aware that Mo Farah was born outside of the UK.

What heritage? Come on SC, that's poor even by your standards. Fans don't like he's keeping better players out of the side when his eligibility is very minimal.

| I want players to pull on the England shirt for the same reasons I want them to pull on the P&B - because they want to and, more importantly, are PROUD to.
The suggestion that an England shirt is convenient because it let's you play in the big games is as abhorrent as the idea of pulling on the Wales shirt as a stepping stone to "greater" things.

You're either eligible or you're not. As long as he is eligible under the rules he's eligible. At least he actually lives in the UK, plays in Super League and pays taxes to the British Government, which is more than Reed, Widdop and Heighington!
If he was born and bred in England and didn't have a Kiwi sounding name there would have never been any debate about him being picked after he won Man of Steel. He can do things that other English or should I say "England eligible" players can't, even if he isn't a perfect player. If it was GB then Chase shouldn't play it should be Briers, but Briers to give him credit chose Wales and stuck with them rather than change his mind despite the fact the England players in his position aren't fit to lace his boots.
With Chase it's not his ability people dislike, its the fact he obviously wanted to play for NZ and played for the Maori side against England before realising it wasn't going to happen for him.

Italy have got Anthony and Mark Minichello, Craig Gower, Anthony Laffranchi and Terry Campese. If those guys play they are probably going to beat Wales.
But then I suppose the Azzuri won the World Cup in football with Simone Perrotta from Ashton under Lyne in their team so whats new...
