Has there been a better utility player in the last 30 years as I have been racking my brain and cant think of one. Which player before has played 7,6,3,4,11,12,13,9 and I may have missed a few.

For me this the past 3 years, he's been one of the first names on the team sheet

It would be interesting to see what he classes himself as personally.

He's obviously happy to play any part, but he must have a prefered position.

if its not 'dreamboat' i will feel a bit let down.

He has got it all! While scoring two tries is always good, especially a decider, I was more impressed with some of the massive hits he was putting in. His technique is impeccable.

He's a second row for me, good lines, good hands, strong in attack and defence and even shown a decent little kick last night to boot.

Being such a great utility player is in some respects his downfall though, and the same applies to Ratchford although he has almost certainly made the full back position his own for next year. I have tended to see our strongest 17 as follows:

Depending on who you choose for the fourth bench spot - and there's a case for a good few names - you're potentially leaving out both Grix and Ratchford there and they're two of our best players! Becoming known as a jack of all trades but master of none can sometimes be a bad thing for a player, who ultimately finds himself punished for having the ability to slot into various positions.

As said above, it would be interesting to hear what Grix himself deems his best position to be.

He said in an interview once that he see himself as a 13

Got to disagree with you there... I think TS sees Grix has his first choice 13 when everyone is fit.

But everyone being fit is a rarity, so he ends up all over the place.

he's a 13, but is exceptional everywhere, the ultimate utility man.

Simon Grix is the man, Newcastle knights scouts certainly saw something in him all them years ago.

I think the last player we had that had played in positions across the park like this was Paul Darbyshire.
I think the first game I saw Paul play was a Lancs cup QF midweek game and he was playing full back. I am pretty sure he played a decent number of games at Centre and Stand Off, He may have played Scrum Half and Wing at some point but then ended up in the pack playing Second Row / Loose Forward.

We have had a number of players that have flirted between threequarters and back rowers (Cullen, Mercer, Domic, Burns) but not many that have also played in the 6,7 and 9 like Grix and probably Darbyshire have.

I like Simon Grix. He is not the most spectacular player (His try against Leeds was special) but almost everything he does is executed very well.
Too often fans look for that bit of brilliance thinking that is what makes a brilliant player but players that just do the simple things really well can often go unappreciated by the masses.
