He is a non executive chairman, rather than a Lewis type so he doesn't have the jurisdiction to do an awful lot, rather he is in place to oversee and scrutinise the executive members. (Put very simply). I think the two tier board structure was introduced following the Watkins report, alongside a number of subcommittees.

When he was appointed, he mentioned he was going to "open his book of contacts" to the RFL, the implication being that this would be of some tangiable benefit. Yet to see that but 2014 is probably the time to start judging it.

Even as an NED, he's engaged in a senior position and it's fair to expect him to have some sort of impact.

He came into the post with a reputation as someone who could handle the press, court and take advantage of media contacts and raise the profile of the game.

I'll reserve full judgement until the WC but I'm not seeing much change in the journals I read (though Swimwear Illustrated hasn't ever been that big on RL to be fair).

Full of hot air. What has he improved with regards to the profile of our game? I won't forget his "getting us in the papers on a daily basis" baloney.

Give the man a chance, he has been in the job for all of six months. Judge him on his tenure at the end of it, not before he has even got going.

Unfortunately for Barwick it was him who gave his interview on Boots n All banging on that he had a little black book and he was going to raise the profile our our game. What a great start. A boxing gold medalist to present the Challenge Cup. Epic fail.

If you look back on the VT, this time last year there was a long thread saying that an Olympic gold medallist, rather than a distant royal presenting the cup. You just cannot win with rugby league fans.

Mo Farrah, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Chris Hoy and that posh bloke who won the sailing I will have , but surely we could have done better than Campbell.

What he says,no disrespect to the guy that done the presentation but i for one had not even heard of him.If as Barwick as stated about bringing the game to an higher profile well that was not it.As said he asnt been here long wel how long does he need? When are we going to get any feed back of any progress made in making us higher profile,some news on a main title sponsor would a good start.Remember he was the one going on about HIS book of contacts.

There are some very high profile premiership footballers & managers (Rooney, Ferdinand for a start) who have expressed their admiration and respect for RL via twitter etc. so why aren't we courting them? Unless their clubs have some kind of restriction just the sight of Rooney being introduced to the players and presenting the trophy would raise the profile massively.

Since Barwick is ex-FA I'd expect him to be in a better position than most to persuade them, but he strikes me as a bit of a Walter Mitty name-dropper.

Trouble with the RFL is they continually aim low, which means they inevitably achieve low.

Whilst the report is tongue in cheek it's still a major swipe at our game. The reporter couldn't even get Tomkins' name right.

The first few paragraphs of that article had me reaching for my 'disgusted of Warrington' pen. However, after reading the whole article, the guy has, albeit somewhat tongue in cheek, got it spot on.

I dont get why it as to be percieved as tongue in cheek unless im missing something. Its the truth pure and simple i would like to know how they are going to respond to it, one man as written it many of us think it.

It's written from a point of view that our game is a silly northern sport watched by the great unwashed who deserve to be mocked.
The underlying truth of the tale is that London haven't done themselves proud and if push came to shove they will be ousted. Hence the title about geographical. The reporter couldn't even get Tomkins' name right.

Nothing tongue in cheek about that report ,in fact the writer has hit the nail squarely on the head with so many problems that are affecting our game having been highlighted.

That article should be compulsory bed time reading for Brian Barwick if his intentions are to improve the public view of rugby league.

I think rl would have gotten a bigger shot in the arm if they had have appointed Brian Blessed to do the job, a larger than life character, who may have even knew more about rl than Barwick by his admission on his first interview.

I didn't have a clue who Barwick was then anyways!
