Mickey has played the best rugby of his career this season. Will he get nominated or will it be the usual names from the usual club?

You'd have to be a brave man to have a punt, he deserves it but it's similar to international selection, you have almost all the team picked on reputation and one possibly two picked on form. This season he's been our best player but his only trouble is that he's not 'fashionable', he deserves it but won't get it.

Without wishing to get into the semantics of the "impressive non argument" Higham's form IMO this year is based more on him doing his standard thing exceptionally well rather than doing exceptional things.

He has in the past been damned with faint praise, the "One trick Mick" tag was less than complimentary. Well he's definately upped his game and that has done the trick for us in quite a few games this season. In fact has he had a bad game this year?

This season no player has really stood out for me. Charnley & Joel maybe just for the number of try's both have scored.
I don't think Sam Tomkins has had an outstanding season like last year.

A tag given to him by Wigan fans.... who then replaced him with 'no trick mick'.

Sean O'Loughlin at Wigan will probably be favourite. Sam Tomkins has been very good but has not had as much game time as last year because of injuries.
Mickey has been very good this year & must be in with a shout.

Joel & Charnley have both been prolific try scorers but to me that should not be the test for MOS. Danny Houghton at Hull has played well all season.

No one has stood out this year but if I were to pick a 1,2,3. Then it would be
1. Sean O'Loughlin
2. Mickey Higham
3. Danny Holdsworth.

I think Danny Houghton will get it.

No doubt it will be the same names though. Tomkins, Roby & A.N Other.

I think Lunt has been better than Houghton

I think Jamie Peacock has been outstanding for Leeds this year and must be in with a shout.

So O'Loughlin, Brough or Peacock for me.

And I do think Higham has had a great season for Wire.

Brough carries on then he has it sewn up, i agree with Rogues about Peacock though. Especially at his age,

Danny Kirmond has to be up there.

My top five his season would be in no particular order:
Higham
Peacock
Brough
Lunt
O'Loughlin

I think old sausages for eyebrows man Danny Brough will get it this year.

Mickey is doing exactly what Roby did for years at Saints, what he built a reputation on and what he is no longer able to do, and is doing it very, very well.

As Mick Monas star sadly wanes, Higham has timed the best rugby of his career very well, and we should be very grateful we've got him thank-you very much.

This is one of those exaggeration threads that will get laughed at by fans of other clubs.

Its like when Jon Clarke played the best rugby of his career a few years back, 2007, 2008 etc.

Worthy of player of the year at Warrington yes but not Man of Steel.

Sam Tomkins will probably get it, especially if Wigan win everything, because look at their team man for man. Tell us how many world class players are in their team. It doesn't take a genius to work out why they are in the running for all the trophies.

Higham is a good player in good form with quality players around him but he's not singlehandedly dragging a team behind him, that's what Roby did, thats what Chase did, thats what Tomkins does, thats what wins MoS.

Is that why when Tomkins is injured, Wigan lose. Because they are a one man team.

And that's why Leeds players very rarely get a look in for MoS ..... they're a team, not just a single media darling with a support cast!

p.s. - never mention to a Leeds fan that Sir KS actually comes from Lancashire ..... they don't like it

He is definatley the dark horse for it, hes been qulaity for Wakey this year!! If Chase can get it from Cas...why not....

I'm suprised no-one has mentioned Hodgson - he typifies what MOS was supposed to celebrate, mental and physical toughness with an unyielding, fair, committed approach in the face of adversity.

The man lives it every game he plays.

After the last few weeks - I would give it to Obrien - he must be made of steel or am I thinking rubber the way he has been bounced around!!

I think there are quite a few contenders this year. Peacock, Houghton, Brough, Ferres, Kirmond and O'loughlin are in with a shout. I don't see why Higham shouldn't be a contender. From what I've seen of his form recently he has been outstanding, has he played like that all year?

As for Sam, I think he has been as good as last year, the difference this year is people expect it from him now. Liam Farrell would have been in with a shout had he kept it going but his form has dropped in recent months.

What I don't like about MOS is, although voted for by the players it's the media who decide upon the shortlist. I think each head coach should nominate his player of the year from his team. You then have a shortlist of 14 for the players to vote for. As it is now players can't vote for anyone in their own team.

Counter to a popular rumour doing the rounds about them getting a two year contract, I've heard someone isn't getting a new deal. You heard it here first.
