| I would like to see this changed personally.... to 'players player of the season'... as i feel the title is misleading.
Man of Steel, to me indicates someone of great strength and bravery.... heroism and courage....respect and honour.
Last year it was won by a goalkicking winger (who would no way have won it if he hadnt been a goalkicker)...The year before that it was a goalkicking fullback, who cant tackle his own dinner (sorry but its true.. no matter how good he is with ball in hand)..... and this years favourite likes to bend the rules and dives on the floor to get out of the way of tackles.
MOS my .... They should give it to Roby and bring some respectability back to the award.. he has played with broken bones this season on a number of occasions, breaking records in the process...

What he said, would like to think M monaghan would be in the same category as Roby.both outstanding players this year.

That ones awarded by the writers.....you know, those people who copy the reports placed on the news wire by one of the colleagues and stick their names on the bottom.

I agree, but then he was voted Player of the Season by the same people who think Joel Monaghan has been a better winger than Matt King this season. The players may have a different opinion.
I agree with changing the name though. Good though he is I would hardly think of Tomkins as a 'Man Of Steel'. That title would be far better 'worn' by a Morley, Westwood, Graham, Roby, etc. Players Player and Writers Player would be better names.

Pat Richards and Brett Hodgson meet all of those categories without argument.
When Hodgson left the NRL all the press tributes were saying fellow professionals regarded him as pound for pound the toughest player in league.

| agreed, if james roby doesnt get that award this year then the whole thing is a joke, if you look at the super league stats this year hes at the top for nearly everything the effort that lad puts in is unreal playing with broken bones and when hes unfit but yet hes always there putting in 80 minutes week in week out, but its always the people who work the hardest like roby, monaghan, morley, wilkin, o'loughlin to name a few who these team just wouldnt play the same without but sam tomkins will end up getting it wont he becuase he has scored alot of individual good tries but IMO it shouldnt be about that i mean james roby has done 5000 metres a thousand ahead of tomkins, 948 carries about 200 ahead of the next player the most runs from dummy half around 350 ahead of the next player hes in the top 10 for nearly everything i mean that is just unreal that guy deserves more than a trophy but tomkins has scored the most tries so he should get it

Surely it should just be: O'Cocklin is looking down at his knob - oh no, it's his fullback - same thing I guess!

Rubbish, some of you have short memories indeed, just compare that to Joel monaghan for instance this season (who i think is a good player)
www.superleague.co.uk/statistics ... eason=2011
Top try scorer, third top meter maker, wigan points tally record holder, third clean break maker, plenty of assists and tackles too. He may be well behind the pace this season but he was the best player in SL last season.

| Going back to the title "Man of Steel", I'm not sure if my memory is playing tricks on me, but wasn't the winner so named because originally the sponsor was British Steel. Hence "Man of Steel"?

| It wasn't BSC, but it was a steel manufacturing company. The first winner was David Ward in 1977. If anyone's got any old programmes from that period we should be able to find out the original sponsor. Question. How many times have Wire players won it, who, and what year?
