after the game on friday we returned to my mates car on the car park at the back of the DW stadium, we came accross an irate wigan fan and his girfriend sat in their car cursing because their car was blocked in by ours.
to make matters worse i asked him how long he had been waiting (we hadn't rushed out of the stadium for obvious celebratory reasons)
he informed us they had left ten minutes before the end of the match in an attempt to get away before the main traffic!

the bad news for him was we then gave him loads for the wigan walk and the loss, which he had to take as we did not move our car until we had finished..
to make matters worse it was his bad parking that had led to him being blocked in so he had to be very gracious in defeat! something we pointed out and he had to accept

That's not ironic, it's just unfortunate.

i would have tought the irony was in the fact they left early, but due to bad parking had to wait till nearly everyone else had left to get away? but hey that's me corrected, would you like me to change the title of my thread?

A situation is often said to be ironic (situational irony) if the actions taken have an effect exactly opposite from what was intended. So thus, wigan fan wanting to get away from stadium car park early has to stay at stadium car park till late. Sounds ironic enough to me.

It's not irony in the strictest sense of the word. It could only be described as ironic if waiting untill the end of the game would have resulted in him getting away quicker. As the time he excited the car park was unrelated to the time he left the game, it can't really be described as ironic, because his actions had no bearing on the outcome.

However, language evolves, and the word ironic is often used(incorrectly IMO) to describe any outcome that is opposite to that which was intended. It is quickly becoming an acceptable use of the word, even though that's not what it means.

I'm not an English teacher. I'm not being pedantic, or posting with the intention of correcting anyone. Just trying to explain to anyone who may be interested.

Having just read the thread about the Wigan fan getting verbal abuse and assaulted by a Warrington fan, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on if said Wigan fan would have got out of the car and given you a good pasting?

i'd have held my head in shame, as a 20+ stone ex service man, ex night club doorman, who has worked in forensic mental health settings with very dangerous mentally ill offenders i think my banter was on a level that was
a. not designed to provoke violence
b. resulted in the pieman seeing the funny side of the situation (especialy seeing that he's caused the problem partly himself by parking badly!)
c. i didn't call him a d!ckhead, unlike the idiot who got slapped about.
d. i can look after myself.
