Nope - absolutely no sympathy for him at all. From a rugby point of view he's sold his talents short and could have been an absolute legend of the game, regardless of the number of times he's contributed to a Wire defeat, but he chose to pee most of his talents away. From a personal point of view having read his book he seems something of a too...

I've got a lot of sympathy. It was a filthy challenge by Newton and Long did well to come back from that. I've read his book and he's just a daft northern lad. In terms of peeing most of his talents away he seems to have achieved a lot in the game.

Maybe but I'm one who thinks how much more he could have been. He never produced the goods at the top international level, he ran away from the world cup when GB had the chance to win something, he lead younger & impressionable players astray with his antics off the pitch, and he certainly isn't someone I would hold up as a role model. Perhaps the phrase "flawed genius" is one that should be trotted out?

No sympathy. The amount of times he has broken my heart with his performances against us, particularly the last minute drop goal. As regards his off field antics, the less said the better, suffice to say that he hasn't exactly been a role model

Don't think Briers really ever had the team around him that Long had tbf, look what happened as soon as they put him in a quality side and i'm pretty certain that if Briers hadn't been shat on by saints all those years ago his personal awards display case at home would of had to of been much bigger!

Defo heart goes out to the guy,As a player I hate him for obvious reasons but as a bloke think he desrves the respect that a man who has won almost everything you can win and for that I send him my best wishes

Read bits of his book and as has been said above 'daft northern lad' springs to mind.

Don't like him froim the point of view of what he's done to us, and could have undoubtedly been a bigger star but it depends on your half full / half empty point of view.

Nobody should have the decision to end their career taken from them.
