| Would it be too controversial a suggestion to perhaps say that - after recent refereeing performances - it might be time to replace Mr Cummins? Refereeing is a godforsaken job but - tbh - some of the recent performances at Super League and Challenge Cup level have left a lot to be desired. Perhaps it's time for a change! Discuss!

| Id say take them back to being part time. They seemed a lot better beforehand.
But of course that means we're going backwards as a developing sport. A bit like we would if we got rid of the video referee.

| Fantastic Post - In every Sport, officials make good and bad calls.
My only proposal is that RL reverts to a Union style Video Ref system with the, "Is there any reason not to award the Try"? Allowing the VR to check anything.

| Your spot on. Cummins is a joke imo.
We need a reffing system with some balls.
For a start disciplinary is a joke, the panel needs to make some bigger calls that actually punish teams. The whole nine games thing with Tickle, for example.
Secondly a head ref who will actually punish referees for bad decisions, Soccer leads the way on this, dropping refs down a league and promoting the best ref from the leafue below for a week.

| I'd change the roles of the Ref/Touch Judges/In Goal. If 5 officials can't get 95% + of decisions correct between them then.....

| this has been mooted on other forums for a while, but why get rid of 1 yes man for another?
got a feeling the original poster was thinking of last nights live game, when he had this thread in mind.
The ref has a very difficult job to start off with and most people when they are actually watching a game at the ground, will only see the team they support and the decisions for and against them.If the game is shown live, then further pressure is placed on the refs shoulders.
I have long since been convinced that certain refs favour or dislike certain teams or players.2 refs from the 70s spring to mind. And I know of 1 sl; ref, whos own mother is a season ticket holder for a sl club, whom they both supported for years.and dont forget that live sky tv games are notoriously dodgy anyway.
For me,the only way forward is get rid of video-refs and give the game back to the ref and 2 linesman.

| The old days were better, when Greg McAllum was in charge of the refs, and there were powerful refs round like Presley, Cummins, Bob Connolly and Kirkpatrick. The only one with any authority left from that era is Ganson, when he retires the cupboard will be bare.
I'd like to see Ganson be the refs controller, can't see him being a yes man, he'd enforce tough standards and he wouldn't shy away from making decisions. Or Kirkpatrick, if he wanted to come back.
