| This is not another Gleeson to Wigan thread or Gleeson bashing thread specifically but do we think his departure could be signalling the end for players who either do not live up to the new standards that Tony Smith is setting, and/or those who are simply not pulling their weight for the cause?
I wondered what was meant by Rileys little comment to Gary Skent..
Quote GS - "Since Tony Smith's come on board, what are your opinions of him?"
CR - "yeah I've found him a good coach. Obviously you hear the rumours about this and that but you have to take on board what he's done in the game."'" Me thinks some of the players were a little worried by Tony Smith's arrival and reputation for strict discipline. Perhaps in a similar albeit better way than with Steve Anderson?
What do you think? Rats leaving a sinking ship, or bad apples being binned?

| Bit of a strange one this. I thought Gleeson would have flourished under Smith.
For GB and England Gleeson was a regular starter and one of the players that looked to play well, when on international duty.
I can understand him wanting to leave Warrington to head for Aus, I can even understand him wanting to go to Wigan before Smith's arrival.
What I cant understand is Gleeson not seeing an opportunity to better himself under Smith (or is time running out for Gleeson). And I cant weigh up how Tony Smith can pick him for GB/ England yet is happy for him to leave
The one thing we dont know is the wage structure. TS could have simply looked down the salary list and figured that to reduce expenditure he has to find a player that wants out and who clubs would be willing to sign. Gleeson fits the bill and would allow a couple of players coming the other way.
course it might all be a load of rubbish

Salary comments aside, I agree. Don't forget, if Gleeson did want out, why did he sign a new contract 12 months ago? The thing I really can't get my head round is why go to Wigan when all the talk was about the NRL. Be honest, he isn't going to replicate the success he had at Saints with Wigan, which will leave him thinkiung; what could I have achieved in Australia?

Latest is that Gleeson left yesterday and signed for Wigan as rumoured for 2 players in exchange, 1 being Mathers and the other heavily rumoured to be Goulding. IF this is the case, then I think we did ok - he was going at end of year for free anyway & he would have been on massive wages that will have now free'd up some. Also his "off field" antics left a lot to be desired. We as Wire fans have been asking for years for a team that want to play in our colours, Gleeson is the start of the bad apples leaving, no matter what he did on the pitch, he wasted his obvious talent by being in cruise mode throughout his career. Wigan are welcome to him and his antics. He wont turn into an angel overnight because of this.
Finally, we have a coach who has the cojones to do something about players for the good of the club.
If Gleeson doesnt play today, that confirms it for me.

| Because his form over the last few years does not warrent an NRL move. Why with all the top centres Australia have, would they need to go for a Gleeson who looks nothing out of the ordinary majority of the time.

| If Gleeson had played v York then he couldn't have played for Wigan in the C Cup.
Perhaps Gleeson has enough of Tony Smith in the World Cup down under.
I thought Gleeson did reasonable in the WC but Tony Smith's performance as coach was worse then awful.
He's a good club coach IMO but a long way from an Intl coach.
Maybe it was Gleeson who told Smith "I want to leave asap".
Good deal all round both for Wigan, Wire and Gleeson.
Interesting to see if Goulding is included. If he doesn't want to leave Wigan then all he has to do is say "No" as he's under contract to end of 2010. If Wigan cancelled his contract then they'd have to pay him up.

I must say, I dislike it when people compare club and international management, as its a totally different thing.
The best coach in the world couldn't have got much better from the England side at the World Cup, simply because you can't shine a turd....England, player by player, compared to the Aussies and Kiwis, were always miles behind, and Smith or not, England would have failed miserably.
The difference at a club, is that a coach can analyse a team, and actually do something about it through recruitment....You have a few bad players??...Get rid, and sign some better ones......Unfortunately, international rugby doesn't allow this luxury, work with the hyped up superstars that English rugby is full of, and pray for miracles...

I assume Gleeson Knows Brian Noble is the Wigan Coach
he too never won a tap as International coach...and was in charge When Sean Long showed a total lack of respect for the National Jersey and was sent home /mid series.....
If Tony Smith ruffled feathers because he wants players to show respect then no wonder Gleesons off to Nobles team...

I heard that Gleese was pretty miffed at loosing his spot to Josh Hannay hence him wanting a move to Wigan

Well said Geordie. The bloke has been on cruise mode the whole time he was with us. He never respected us as a club. You will see a world beater once more at wigan I presume. Wait and see.
PS. I agree first of the bad apples out. Bring on the rest of em. A shame monaghan got injued...
